College presidents call for stricter gun laws

More than 160 college and university presidents from across the country have signed an open letter calling for stricter gun laws.

The effort was spearheaded by the presidents of Oglethorpe University and Agnes Scott College in Georgia. Among other things, the letter released Wednesday calls for reinstating a ban on semi-automatic assault weapons, requiring consumer safety standards for all guns and opposing legislation that would allow guns on college campuses.

The letter says the time has long since passed for silence and inaction on the issue of reasonable gun safety legislation. Most of the schools that signed onto the letter are private, liberal arts institutions.

Schools that signed include Barnard College in New York, Wake Forest University in North Carolina and Connecticut College.
