Obama takes on Romney on college affordability

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? President Barack Obama says deep cuts in college aid that Mitt Romney is set to make would be the moral equivalent of telling youngsters, "Tough luck, too bad, you're on your own."

At a college campus in Ohio, Obama said the budget plans of Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan would slash Pell Grants and student loans. And noting advice Romney once gave to a college student to borrow money from his parents, Obama said, "Not everybody has parents who have the money to lend."

The dig at Romney's wealth came during a stop at Capital University in Columbus.

The GOP team counters Obama's policies have done little to stem a surge in college tuition costs, and the students who graduate face a bleak job outlook.

Floripa London restaurant review - Foodepedia

I didn?t realise Floripa was at the site of the former Favela Chic, on the corner spot of Great Eastern Street, until I arrived. I?ve danced off a few drinks at the former in my time, but never imagined it as a place to eat.

Floripa is more of a revamp than a complete about-turn ? there?s the same huge indoor area with a long bar and ample space for dancing and a stage, but Floripa is shouting louder about its food: there is a snug for diners in the far corner as well as tables on the paved area outside.

Floripa aims to recreate the atmosphere of the Brazilian island it is named after, a sort of Balearic/carnival hybrid, and we?re lucky enough to be able to sit outside in the sun on a lazy Sunday late afternoon. Music is the biggest draw here. On the roster is a busy selection of DJs and musicians playing everything from funk, soul and bossa to jazz and contemporary dance of all persuasions. Wednesdays, Jam Tart, are open mic jam sessions, then there are DJs over the weekend.

Come Sunday afternoons there is Jazz, and a slap up Sunday roast, Brazilian-style, seems a good way to enjoy it. The only problem is that Floripa is so big that when it?s not busy and there are no bodies to soak up the sound, the volume is overwhelming, and certainly not suited to a relaxed Sunday.

From outside we can still hear the music even if we can?t see the musicians. Chef David Yorkston has made an admirable effort to provide authentic flavours of Brazil in a UK context, with some local twists and ingredients. The Sunday Roast menu is ?14 for one course, ?18 for two and ?22 for three. The favoured cut in Brazil is the ?picanha?, a beautifully fatty triangular cut from the rump, which became popular in the 1960?s and has been the prized dish at any churrascaria since.

At Floripa this cut is fashioned to resemble a typical English roast. It is juicy, if slightly overdone, but I would have preferred thicker slices to really taste the chargrilled outside, and the Yorkshire pud and glut of gravy seem slightly incongruous. The alternatives are half a roast chicken stuffed with chipotle, coriander and coconut and garlic butter and a vegetable and brazil nut roast.

The sides are good: roast potatoes with crunch and a sweet potato mash rather than the cassava eaten all over Brazil. Cassava?s earthy taste and slightly sticky and chewy consistency, often cooked with plenty of salt, is what marks a meal out as tasting truly Brazilian. So while I applaud the attempt to consider food miles, it would have been nice to see some here.

To start we had kibbe, which are meatballs made with bulgur wheat, cumin and a touch of chilli, and fava bean dip served with flatbread and baby gem lettuce. The portions are hangover-sized, which is just as well given the time we had to wait for them: the food itself came quickly, getting hold of a menu, a drink and someone to take your food order whilst sat outside was a challenge. Both are simple and tasty.

The desserts are tempting ? spiced rice pudding with baked fig & honey, Valrhona brownie ? but we?re stuffed. With the perspective that a Sunday roast is meant as a filling meal of comfort food, Floripa succeeds, and it?s a change from your local pub. I?m just not sure that the soporific aftermath of gluttony goes well with really loud music and dancing.

Why China?s Xiaomi is inspiring loyalty that rivals Apple ?fanboys? and Google ?fandroids?

Calling someone an Apple fanboy (or worse, fanboi) or a fandroid is usually meant to be an insult, but supporters of Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi have no trouble calling themselves fans. They may be the new kids on the block, but they?re definitely some of the most loyal.

Xiaomi got its start two years ago with its MIUI skin for Android. Last year, it released its own smartphone, called the Mi-One, and went on to sell over 3.5 million units of the device. The company has also developed a Miliao IM chat service that just?passed the milestone?of 1 million simultaneous online users.

When Xiaomi unveiled its Mi-Two smartphone a few days ago at a high-profile media event in Beijing, more than a thousand of its fans, who call themselves ?mi fen? (??) in Chinese, were in attendance. ?The phrase ?Mi fen? is a pun that?is shorthand for ?Xiaomi fan? and also means ?rice flour?, a clever play off?Xiaomi?s name, which means millet or ?little rice? (??).

Something about the Mi-Two unveiling seemed familiar and the more I thought about it, the more I found similarities between the newly-emerging ?cult of Xiaomi? and fan communities for Apple and Google.

A Charismatic Leader

Co-founder Lei Jun has a charismatic personality that inspires loyalty in his customers in much the same way that the late Steve Jobs did for Apple. Jobs was a masterful orator, and Lei took a few pages from his book for his keynote at the Mi-Two launch. The way in which he kept the audience waiting to hear the price of the new phone (an impressive $315 or RMB 1,999, by the way) was as Jobsian as any Macworld of WWDC keynote I?ve seen.

leijun stevejobs Why Chinas Xiaomi is inspiring loyalty that rivals Apple fanboys and Google fandroids

Left: Xiaomi founder Lei Jun (TNW), Right: Steve Jobs (AP Photo / Paul Sakuma)

?

With his black shirt and jeans, Lei even bore a resemblance to Jobs, who was known for wearing a black mock turtleneck and jeans.?Though Lei has resisted the comparison between his preferred outfit, which he says is a plug for Vancl, an ecommerce company he?s an investor in, and Jobs, he has acknowledged that the Apple co-founder was an inspiration to him.

The 43-year-old Lei, whose net worth is believed to be more than $1 billion, formerly served as the CEO at Kingsoft and was one of the co-founders of Joyo, a Chinese ecommerce site that partnered with and was later bought by Amazon. In additional to Vancl, he?s also an investor in several other successful Chinese companies YY and UC Web.

Xiaomi?s similarities to Apple were especially apparent when the company announced a ?1S? upgrade to its first-generation phone. So far, the company appears to be following the single model, multiple generation strategy of the iPhone.

Whether or not Lei himself is willing to make the comparison, his fans certainly have. Forbes notes that some Chinese have taken to calling him ?Lei bu si?, a tongue-in-cheek reference to ?Qiao bu si? the Chinese translation of Jobs? name.

You Say You Want a Revolution

For a company to inspire true loyalty in its customers, it needs a message. Both Apple and Google have had missions that have resonated with their followings, and Xiaomi is no exception. Take for instance, the name of the company, which co-founder Lin Bin says is a reference to a Chinese phrase for revolution.

Politics in are a highly sensitive topic for corporations in China, and Xiaomi has largely steered away from any controversy that could jeopardize its relationship with the central government. It has, however, cultivated a subtly counter-cultural image that appeals to the younger generation.

Why Chinas Xiaomi is inspiring loyalty that rivals Apple fanboys and Google fandroids

Take for instance the Mi-bunny character that the company uses as its mascot. Its red scarf, a reference to the Young Pioneers of China political organization, and its old school communist worker hat evoke Chinese national pride, while the silliness of the rabbit softens the rhetoric and even playfully inverts it.

T-Shirts

T-shirts might sound like an odd reason for arguing the development of a loyal fan base, but in today?s world of hyper-branding, they?re a must. Recognizable t-shirts give users an opportunity to declare their allegiance and adopt the company?s style as their own.

Apple has done this to significant effect. The shirts that employees at its Apple Stores wear have become so iconic that knockoff Apple Stores in China copy them in order to look real.

Meanwhile, the company?s practice of giving out limited edition shirts at (real) retail store openings has also helped build identity among its customers. When the iPad officially launched in China, one man spent two days camping out in front of an Apple Store with a homemade blue shirt that said ?I buy iPad No. 1.?

ipad no1 520x340 Why Chinas Xiaomi is inspiring loyalty that rivals Apple fanboys and Google fandroids

?

Xiaomi understood the power of the tee at its Mi-Two launch. Employees wore different color shirts depending on their tasks. Not unlike the blue-shirted?clapping gauntlet at Apple Store openings and product launches, orange-shirted greeters formed a line at the entrance to the venue, while workers in black shirts worked to corral media away from Xiaomi?s key executives.?Special Mi-Two launch t-shirts were included in bags given to attendees, so the hall quickly turned into a sea of orange.

xiaomi fans 520x329 Why Chinas Xiaomi is inspiring loyalty that rivals Apple fanboys and Google fandroids

?

Graphic t-shirt designs are on sale on Xiaomi?s website to let Mi fans proudly represent. Interestingly, some of the shirts are cheeky, such as the below design where the Mi-bunny is fixing the robot. The company also sells other accessories like dolls and dongles that promote the ?mi fen? culture.

Why Chinas Xiaomi is inspiring loyalty that rivals Apple fanboys and Google fandroids

Social Media

Xiaomi has also been active in engaging with its fans on social media like Sina Weibo. It teased the release of the new phone on Weibo and frequently runs promotions on the service giveaways. The company also maintains a Twitter account, but the account doesn?t have a large following there, most likely because?the service is unavailable in China.

Xiaomi Overseas

For now, Xiaomi?s fan base remains largely Chinese, as it has yet to market its phones outside of the country. The company does have international aspirations, though. Engadget recently reported that, according to a source, Xiaomi phones will launch in Europe next year. When that happens, it?ll be interesting to see if Mi fan culture transfers overseas.

Growing beyond China will be an important move for the company, though, since it has billed itself as a low-margin phone maker. Lei revealed at the Mi-Two event that the new phone is being sold at a loss, based on calculations of 3 million devices sold.

?We are not looking to make any money, or to make Xiaomi profitable, for the next two or three years,? Lin said earlier this year.

The company should be set up for the long haul, as it just raised $216 million in a Series D funding round that valued it at $4 billion.

Xiaomi might not be making money yet, but it?s building a loyal fan base that should help the company succeed. And, judging by the photo below of the bathroom sign at the event last week, it?s at least having some fun with it along the way.

Autonomous Wave Glider bot launched to track sharks, beam real-time data to your iPhone and iPad

When they're not breaking world records, fuel-hating Wave Glider seabots like to indulge in other hobbies, like shark tracking. One of the vessels has just been launched off the coast near San Francisco (vid after the break), adding a mobile worker to the existing local network of buoy-mounted receivers. They monitor the movements of electronically tagged sea life, including the fearsome Great White, picking up signals within a 1,000-foot range while researchers from Stanford University analyze the data from the safety of the shore. Better still, the free Shark Net iOS app gives anyone the chance to track these things, and activity should increase as the monitoring network (hopefully) expands along the west coast and more bots are introduced. You didn't think the world's fascination sharks was limited to only a single single week, did you?

PFT: 49ers' James says he'll practice Monday

Jacksonville Jaguars v New Orleans SaintsGetty Images

NFL coaches can be big jerks.? Sean Payton is an NFL coach.? Thus, Sean Payton can be a big jerk.

That pretty much summarizes the latest Outside The Lines report regarding the Saints, from ESPN?s John Barr.

We?ve heard the stories over the years.? Payton can be arrogant and vindictive and mean spirited when dealing with the media.? And, yes, he has done some things that are over the top ? as his one-year suspension confirms.

So have other coaches.

It doesn?t make it right.? But it goes with the territory.? And it flows from the physical, rough-and-tumble nature of the sport.

?He wanted every player on the team to have swag,? former Saints defensive end Charles Grant said of Payton.? ?Even if you was in the front office, he wanted you to have swag.?

The Saints have dealt with a series of problems in recent years, many of which flow from the fact that former employees (who possibly didn?t have enough ?swag?) are sufficiently unhappy with the team to file lawsuits and talk to reporters and, in the case of the bounty investigation, blow the whistle to the league.? This means that, at one or more levels, the Saints have a chronic people problem that they need to solve.

The Saints also made the poor decision (and they?ll surely admit it in hindsight) to associate with Mike Ornstein, who as we?ve been told even had a locker at the team?s facility.? ?We were trying to get rid of him,? an unnamed league official told Barr regarding Ornstein, ?because frankly he?s a cancer.?

If the league office had been trying to get rid of Ornstein, they didn?t do a good enough job of it.? And the common theory in league circles is that, if/when Ornstein becomes sufficiently disgruntled with the league office, he could bring others down with him.

During the report, Barr explained that he received a ?threatening phone call from an anonymous caller wondering why were were out to dig up information about the Saints.?? Barr said it was later determined that the call came from team spokesman Greg Bensel?s cell phone.? Bensel denied to Barr that Bensel made the call, and Bensel didn?t say who had.

Of course, Barr didn?t mention ? at all ? his apparent swing and a miss regarding the report that G.M. Mickey Loomis had the ability in 2002 to eavesdrop on opposing coaches.? It?s possible that the ?threatening phone call? came at or about the time Barr dropped that misplaced bombshell, and it?s believed within the Saints organization (we?re told) that the Loomis story was all Barr could find after being sent to New Orleans to somehow, some way advance the ball on a bounty story that had percolated for two years, right under the noses of ESPN?s journalistic army.

Barr also didn?t say how the call was ?threatening.?? What was the specific threat?? No more access for ESPN?? Physical violence?? Possible dumping into a cold tub?

It?s almost as if the reporting has become personal.? That ESPN is playing the ?don?t mess with the guy who buys his ink by the truckload? card.

Yes, that?s a real dynamic in the media.? And it?s important for media outlets to try to strike the right balance between editorial decisions based on whether the story is truly newsworthy or whether, as in this case, ESPN simply wanted to give the Saints a taste of their own medicine.

Iran: Israel's existence 'insult to all humanity'

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Israel's existence is an "insult to all humanity," Iran's president said Friday in one of his sharpest attacks yet against the Jewish state, as Israel openly debates whether to attack Iran over its nuclear program.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said confronting Israel is an effort to "protect the dignity of all human beings."

"The existence of the Zionist regime is an insult to all humanity," Ahmadinejad said. He was addressing worshippers at Tehran University after nationwide pro-Palestinian rallies, an annual event marking Quds (Jerusalem) Day on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan.

Israel considers Iran an existential threat because of its nuclear and missile programs, support for radical anti-Israel groups on its borders and repeated references by Iranian leaders to Israel's destruction. Ahmadinejad himself has repeatedly made such calls, as has Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran has denied allegations that it is seeking to build nuclear weapons, saying its nuclear program is peaceful and aimed at producing electricity and radioisotopes used to treat cancer patients.

Israel has been carrying on an increasingly public debate about whether to attack Iran's nuclear facilities. Israel's official position is to favor diplomatic and economic measures to persuade Iran to halt its uranium enrichment program, but Israel insists that Iran must not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons. Israeli leaders say "all options are on the table," a clear reference to a military strike, if they determine that other measures have failed.

Iran has warned it would hit back at Israel if it is attacked, also threatening to strike at American interests in the region.

Ahmadinejad called Israel "a corrupt, anti-human organized minority group standing up to all divine values."

"Today, confronting the existence of the fabricated Zionist regime is in fact protecting the rights and dignity of all human beings," said Ahmadinejad, with a black and white scarf many Palestinians wear around his neck.

Demonstrators in Tehran set U.S. and Israeli flags on fire and chanted "Death to the U.S." and "Death to Israel" during their pro-Palestinian rally.

In Washington, National Security Council Spokesman Tommy Vietor strongly condemned the Iranian leaders comments.

"If Iranian officials are truly concerned about protecting the rights and dignity of all human beings, then Iran should stop supporting Assad's brutal assault on the Syrian people. Iran and Syria's blatant disregard for basic human rights is the real insult to humanity," Vietor said.

A spokesperson for U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement that Ban also condemned the comments and said leaders in the region should use their voices to "lower, rather than to escalate, tensions."

Iran and Israel have been bitter enemies for decades. Khamenei has called Israel a "cancerous tumor" that must be wiped out.

Tensions between Iran and Israel have intensified since 2005, when Ahmadinejad said in a speech that Israel will one day be "wiped off the map." The Iranian president has also described the Holocaust, when 6 million Jews were killed by German Nazis and their collaborators during World War II, as a "myth."

Home D?cor for the Busy Mom | Kids | Parenting Advice | Pregnancy ...

Before your child was born, you likely spent hours decorating the nursery with matching colors and themes. As your child grows and becomes mobile, you quickly realize what kind of havoc they wreak on luxurious condos. Childproofing a home does not have to mean compromising on d?cor. While the majority of mothers with young children will tell you that keeping the home tidy is a challenge, basic d?cor can still exist as long as it remains simple.

Accent with pillows and throws

Children?s toys tend to be brightly colored, so furnish your home with as many neutrals as possible and let the colors of childhood be accent pieces. Instead of trying to use a vase or expensive candles to accent a room, use less fragile items like pillows and throws to add color.

Baskets and bins

The days of immaculate shelves and displays of fine crystal may need to be put on hold for a few years. Moms tend to lower their standards of tidiness when picking up after a toddler who leaves a wake of items strewn behind them everywhere they go. A simple and cute way to keep a neat appearance in a room without spending excessive time organizing and cleaning is to use baskets or bins on shelves. These open top containers work similarly to drawers and provide an opportunity for d?cor and tidiness. Toys, books, blankets and pacifiers can be stowed in a bin haphazardly, but when that bin is placed on the shelf with a decorated edge facing the room, design and function combine for a sense of serenity. Use paint, fabric, decoupage or simple color patterns to decorate the bins and accent the room.

Kids? artwork

Anyone who visits your condos in Austin will know you have children. There is no need to try to hide or deny the fact, so use it! Frame some of your kids? best artwork and hang it on the wall to add some color to a room. Original art is a valuable decorating tool and your kids? work is priceless. Hint: one day when they?re driving you crazy or claiming to be ?bored?, give them some markers or paint and have them create their masterpieces for the wall. You can update existing frames or simply add to the collage. Children are less likely to break or damage something if they feel a personal connection to it.

Easily cleaned materials

Come to grips with the fact that your furniture is going to get dirty. There will be crumbs, toys and sticky fingers on cushions, carpets and doors. Rather than getting upset about how the sippy cup leaked juice on your fine upholstery, make sure your furniture is comprised of material that is easily cleaned with soap and water. Products like Scotch Guard can only protect so much before the fabric is exposed. Vinyl and faux leather wipes clean easily.

Having children requires adjustments in every aspect of your life. You d?cor may not be exactly like you?d want it if you didn?t have children, but it doesn?t have to be completely ignored either.

Piper responds to being ranked as wrestling's greatest villain

Roddy Piper responds to being ranked by WWE.com as wrestling's greatest villain.

WWE CLASSICS: How does it feel to be ranked as the No. 1 villain in sports-entertainment history?

RODDY PIPER: Actually, I?m quite honored and I?ll tell you why. The very first individual that breaks out in my mind as a top villain is Gorgeous George, and it?s hard to beat the first guy.

WWE CLASSICS: How did you become a great bad guy?

PIPER: There was a lot of work that people don?t know about that I did to establish my villain persona. There were a lot of miles on the road that went into it, thousands upon thousands of hours of writing on yellow pads while driving in my car with the dome light on. I can?t begin to tell you how many individuals in the industry would school me 24 hours a day. I would then perform at night and they would tear me up afterwards, over and over, to help me perfect my craft. So, from my point of view, I?m humbled, and I take this recognition by WWE.com as a complete honor. It blows me away. (SEE THE FULL LIST)

WWE CLASSICS: Piper?s Pit was a unique concept. How did the segment benefit you as a villain?

PIPER: Piper?s Pit was totally unscripted, everything just happened, thus innovation was a challenging must to accomplish. One of my early Pits involved a fellow named Frankie Williams, and I didn?t have a clue as to what I was going to do. So I asked him where he was from, and in the thickest Hispanic accent he said I?m from Columbus, Ohio. Bang, we?re on!

WWE CLASSICS: WWE fans still talk about that segment today.

PIPER: I felt that that interview more than any other put Piper?s Pit on the map. And what was a positive for me was that I didn?t know who was going to be on. I honestly had no idea. Things changed on a dime back then. But I had a personal knowledge of just about everybody in the business, and I had that banked in my back pocket, so if I got stuck I would go there. But in the Pit I had to be biting and original and controversial, all at the same time. Plus I set a personal bar to top myself each and every week. That became difficult. But I believe that I did just that, and the rest, as they say, is history. (WATCH: THE WILDEST PIPER'S PITS)

WWE CLASSICS: What would you say was your most villainous moment?

PIPER: Probably when I had my altercation with Cyndi Lauper in 1984. She was the female entertainer of the year that year. And I also broke her gold record over the head of Captain Lou Albano, all in the same night. After all was said and done I turned around and there was a New York City policeman in uniform with a gun, standing in the middle of the ring at me. I looked at him like, ?What are you doing here?? India auditor says billions lost in coal scandal

NEW DELHI ?

India's national auditor said Friday the government lost huge sums of money by selling coal fields to private companies without competitive bidding and in a deal for Delhi's international airport, adding to massive losses from dubious auctions of other state assets.

Three reports by the Comptroller and Auditor General sparked a new storm of criticism of a government that has been floundering under a crush of scams and corruption accusations and has been unable to push through critical economic reforms.

Over the past year, a raft of scandals have surfaced involving ministers and senior officials over corruption charges in the hosting of the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the sale of cellphone spectrum that auditors said lost the country billions of dollars.

The auditor's coal field report to Parliament estimated that private companies got a windfall profit of $34 billion because of the low prices they paid for the fields. The report said an auction would have given the government some of that money.

It revealed that 142 coal fields were sold since July 2004 to private and state-run companies. Some of the coalfields bought by private companies in 2004 did not begin production till 2011, while some companies later made enormous profits by selling the coal mines.

The report criticized the sales procedure that was followed and said the allocation of coal fields "lacked transparency and objectivity."

The auditors said the allocations were made on the recommendation of state governments. They exonerated Prime Minister Manmohan Singh even though he was running the coal ministry part of that period under review.

Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal defended the government's strategy of handing out coalfields to companies without resorting to an auction process by saying the policies were suited to the time when they were adopted.

He also disagreed with the CAG's estimate of losses, saying these were unexplored coalfields.

"When the revenue from these coalmines is not known, how can losses be estimated?" Jaiswal told reporters Friday.

India has been facing a severe shortage of coal to fuel its power sector. Last month, more than 600 million people in the country went without power for hours after the electricity grid collapsed, plunging northern, eastern and northeastern India into darkness.

Starved of coal supplies, India's power companies now are looking at importing coal from Indonesia and Australia.

On Friday, opposition lawmakers slammed the government for not pushing ahead with legislation on auctioning procedures for coal fields that has been pending in Parliament since 2006.

"This is a scam that has been taking place under the prime minister's nose. We want answers and an explanation from the prime minister on the charges made by the CAG," said Rajiv Pratap Rudi, a spokesman of the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party.

The government countered the arguments, saying the auditors' report would be studied by the Parliament's public accounts committee.

V. Narayanasamy, minister in the prime minister's office, said the CAG report was "not the last word."

The government has argued that when the coal fields were allotted, the laws existing then did not allow for an auction. Changing the policy and administrative processes would have delayed the process by several years and would have hurt industry sectors that needed coal.

An earlier draft of the report that had been leaked to the Indian media claimed the government had lost nearly $210 billion from the coal allocations.

The auditor said it had lowered the amount after subtracting the profits that accrued to government-owned companies and accounting only for the profits made by open cast mines. The auditor did not explain the reason for leaving out the profits made by underground mines.

The losses could rival those from the government's botched sale of 2G cellphone spectrum in 2008 that the auditor said cost the nation up to $36 billion in lost revenue.

The CAG's report on expanding New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport chided the government for leasing out land with a potential earning capacity of 1.63 trillion rupees ($30 billion) to a consortium, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which had made a total equity contribution of only $445 million.

DIAL is a public-private partnership between India's GMR group, which has a 54 percent stake, and the state-owned Airports Authority of India. Germany's Fraport AG and Malaysia Airport Holdings are the other minority partners in the consortium that has operated the Delhi airport since 2006.

Another CAG report on power said that the lowest qualified bidder for the role of consultant in two mega power projects was not considered and the contract was given at a higher price to Ernst & Young simply because they had advised on the bid management of a power plant in Bangladesh.

In at least one case, the government allowed a private power company to use surplus coal from another power project, a move that would likely result in financial benefits to the company of 290 billion rupees ($5.3 billion) over 20 years, the report said.

The permission to use surplus coal from other projects "vitiated the sanctity of the bidding process since it amounts to significant post bid concessions," the report added.

Designing tiny molecules that glow in water to shed light on biological processes

Designing tiny molecules that glow in water to shed light on biological processes

Thursday, August 16, 2012

University of Miami scientists have developed a way to switch fluorescent molecules on and off within aqueous environments, by strategically trapping the molecules inside water-soluble particles and controlling them with ultraviolet light. The new system can be used to develop better fluorescent probes for biomedical research.

Previous studies have used water-soluble particles to bring organic molecules into water. What is novel about this system is the use of a photoswitching mechanism in combination with these particles.

The findings published online by Chemistry-A European Journal, describe the creation of a fluorescent photoswitchable system that is more efficient than current technologies, says Francisco Raymo, professor of chemistry at the UM College of Arts and Sciences and principal investigator of this study.

"Finding a way to switch fluorescence inside cells is one of the main challenges in the development of fluorescent probes for bioimaging applications," Raymo says. "Our fluorescent switches can be operated in water efficiently, offering the opportunity to image biological samples with resolution at the nanometer level."

Fluorescent molecules are not water soluble; therefore Raymo and his team created their system by embedding fluorescent molecules in synthetic water-soluble nanoparticles called polymers that serve as transport vehicles into living cells. Once inside the cell, the fluorescence of the molecules trapped within the nanoparticles can be turned on and off under optical control.

"The polymers can preserve the properties of the fluorescent molecules and at the same time assist the transfer of the molecules into water," Raymo says. "It's a bit like having a fish in a bowl, so the fish can carry on with its activities in the bowl and the whole bowl can be transferred into a different environment."

The new system is faster and more stable than current methods. The fluorescent molecules glow when exposed simultaneously to ultraviolet and visible light and revert back to their original non-luminous state in less than 10 microseconds after the ultraviolet light is removed.

By using engineered synthetic molecules, the new system is able to overcome the natural wear down process that organic molecules are subject to when exposed to ultraviolet light.

"The system can be switched back and forth between the fluorescent and non-fluorescent states for hundreds of cycles, without sign of degradation," Raymo says.

The surface of the system can be customize to help it attach to specific molecules of interests, thus allowing researchers to visualize structures and activity within cells, in real time, with a resolution that would otherwise be impossible to achieve.

Vehicle Leasing Is The Best Solution You May Make | Dog Back Packs

It goes without any objection that nowadays there are plenty of pretty beneficial car leasing solutions you can come across and it is in some events not pretty easy to choose the relevant one. It is generally pretty vital that you do a little bit of your own research to get to know which car leasing option is the most beneficial for your business, your job, or personal situation.

Contract Hire
It is worth mentioning that contract hire, leaseback, contract purchase and finance leasing are the basic types of car leasing facilities available. Generally, contract hire is a particular type of long term rental negotiation which can be opted for by great majority of business people and individuals. In the majority of cases such kind of car leasing fits best for those people who prefer to pay some tiny payments initially per month, as in this event there is no risk of depreciation or the challenges of disposing of the auto, for the user.

Contract Buying
It is necessary to admit that the leasing facility known as contract purchase is a form of automobile leasing opted for by many organizations or businesses. The truth is that they generally hire some type of costly and expensive vehicles and wish to be offered the choice of either giving back the automobile at the final stage of the contract, or to purchase the automobile considered. This type of contract does away with a considerable risk of potential depreciation. In this type of vehicle leasing, the auto is shown as an asset. In the end of the contract, the business or organization can purchase the car with a pretty beneficial amount and enjoy the ownership of it, or on the other hand it can return the vehicle and go in for a new negotiation for another vehicle.
Leaseback
It is absolutely true fact that leaseback is one of the most beneficial types of car leasing. This form of vehicle leasing is often used by businesses. Different organizations generally go in for this type of contract. The companies then leases back the same autos to the company which sells it, and this can be done with VAT in mind.

Finance Lease
In general, finance lease is a type of commercial car leasing facilities that are made use of by different companies which lease out an automobile for a fixed period of time, from a finance organization that owns the vehicle. When a finance vehicle lease is taken, the organization which goes in for the negotiation, has to pay for the cost of taxes, insurance, and various services. Resale and depreciation risks might be borne by the clients. All this is to be checked before deciding on the relevant alternative for your organization or yourself.

Men and boys have eating disorders too | MNN - Mother Nature ...

A hungry college girl eats six slices of pizza at a party, all washed down with a huge cup of pop. Her girlfriends glance at her with marked disgust as they nibble on their food. Nearby but unnoticed, one of their male friends consumes an entire pizza by himself as well as a large bowl of ice cream and a bag of chips. Why the double standard?

?

The world of weight, food and portion-control is regarded mostly as a female problem, and eating disorders seem to be firmly centered on the female sex. Part of the reason is that our culture heavily promotes the ideal of a skinny ? even underweight ? woman. It is more socially acceptable to be overweight as a male, and also more socially acceptable for a man to eat a lot. For that reason, many male binge eaters don't get much notice. Some men who need help in overcoming bulimia (or anorexia) feel isolated because most books and counselors only deal with women facing these issues and don?t look at the issue from a male perspective.

?

Yet, men ? like women ? can turn to food for comfort, seek to control their weight as a way to control their world, and need to deal with the emotional and physical consequences of eating disorders. Yet, men who recognize that they eat too much don?t often recognize the connection between emotional distress and eating.

?

Once again, it has made me realize the responsibility I have as a parent to help my children foster a healthy relationship with food. Right now we have two little girls, but I want the same lessons to be true for any sons we could have in the future. Boys don't just have problems with bulimia; anorexia is an issue, too.

?

The authors of the website?boyanorexia.com?and the book, "Boys Get Anorexia Too," explain: "There are an increasing number of males affected by both anorexia and bulimia. Often there is a link between male eating disorders and athletic prowess, and the quest for physical perfection can result in damaging behaviors associated with diet, supplements and exercise."

?

While there is no one reason for male or female eating disorders, I think that we don't always realize the pressures some men or even young boys face that could make them susceptible. One young man died while doing his nightly 1,000 sit-ups. He weighed 78 pounds and had been anorexic for eight years. His journey started not with a desire to be skinny, but rather a desire to be muscular and strong.

?

Dr. Jennifer Hagman, who runs the eating disorder program at the Children's Hospital Colorado, had this to say, "The emphasis in our culture about eating healthier is no doubt the biggest factor. In school they're telling them to limit the fat in their diet. I hear from many kids in the program that it was after a health class that they started to limit their diets."

?

That has been one of my concerns with the renewed war on childhood obesity. Parents and children are being told about the evils of being overweight and it is such a negative viewpoint. Americans also, on average, don?t know how to enjoy food.

?

Binge eaters aren't savoring their food any more than the person on a diet who feels guilty for any stray calorie. Food should be enjoyed in a healthy way. This is coming from someone who eats a traditional diet ? including butter and red meat ? but I also am concerned that children feel guilty about eating or drinking historically common foods that have been vilified. Their growing bodies may crave needed fat and protein, but certain health trends could make them feel guilty for eating those foods.

?

I remember the butter phobia among female friends in high school. We were eating a meal together, and one girl grabbed some butter for her roll; the other girls where horrified and told her it would make her "fat."

?

With this type of prevalent attitude, are we really surprised that eating disorders are so common? As someone who often talks about healthy eating, I want to be careful that I don't add to the paranoia of our times. I like to think that my life is more about the delicious beautiful foods I eat ? like grass-fed pot roast with root vegetables, pastured chicken, whole-grain pancakes, glorious salads and satisfying soups. Sure, we limit sugar consumption, we don't eat out a whole lot, and there are many inferior foods on our "no" list. But we also don't really feel like we are missing out and we always enjoy our food as a family.

?

I want my daughters to love good food, to love having healthy bodies, and to grow strong. If we have son(s) in the future, I want the same for them. I know they won't be immune to the many influences around them, but I hope that at least at home we can model and encourage a healthy attitude towards food.

?

How do you seek to personally have a healthy attitude towards food? How do you try to help your children have a well-balanced perspective on health and food?

?

AP source: 7 banks subpoenaed over rate-fixing

(AP) ? The attorneys general of New York and Connecticut have issued subpoenas to seven banks over the possible manipulation of a global interest rate, a person with knowledge of the matter told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Subpoenas were issued, mostly last month and this month, to Barclays, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan Chase, HSBC, Royal Bank of Scotland and UBS, the person said.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

American and British regulators have already fined Barclays, based in Britain, $453 million for submitting false information between 2005 and 2009 to keep the interest rate, known as LIBOR, low.

LIBOR, short for London interbank offered rate, is used to set the interest rates on trillions of dollars in contracts around the world, including mortgages and credit cards.

It is a self-policing system and relies on information that global banks submit to a British banking authority.

The New York and Connecticut attorneys general issued the subpoenas because LIBOR is also used to determine the rates for the bonds issued by city and county governments, the person with knowledge of the matter told AP.

Barclays has admitted that it submitted figures that were lower than accurate for its interbank borrowing, including during the financial crisis in the fall of 2008. Those reports made it appear that Barclays was healthier than it was.

UBS filed a report with regulators July 31 saying that agencies including state attorneys general were examining whether it and other banks had tried to manipulate the rate. A spokeswoman for Barclays declined further comment.

Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase declined comment.

Guide to Business Travel Etiquette ? France - Online World Travels

About France

France is the largest country in Western Europe, slightly smaller than Texas. France is between the Bay of Biscay and the Mediterranean Sea; bordering Italy and Spain. 58 million people live in France, about 4.5 million of them foreigners.

Language

French is the primary language spoken in France. If you plan to travel to France, it is strongly recommended that you learn the basics of the language. Your effort will be noticed and appreciated. If you can?t speak French, begin by saying. ?Please excuse me for bothering you, but I do not speak French? ? ?Excusez-moi, s?il vous plait, de vous deranger, mais je ne parle pas francais.?

Business Dress

The French are very conscientious of their appearance and view dress as a reflection of social status and success. Because of this, be sure to wear well-tailored, stylish clothing. Dark, conservative clothing is most appropriate ? avoid bright colors or flashy accessories.

Business Hours

Most businesses in France operate from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, with a lunch hour lasting up to two hours. Many executives or those in senior positions will stay at the office until 7:00 or 8:00 pm.

Holidays

There are 11 public holidays in France. In 2007, they are:

January 1st ? New Year?s Day

April 9th ? Easter Monday

May 1st ? Labour Day

May 8th- 1945 Victory Day

May 17th ? Ascension

May 28th ? Whit Monday

July 14th ? Bastile Day

August 15th ? Assumption

November 1st ? All Saints? Day

November 11th ? Remembrance Day

December 25th ? Christmas Day

Most French employees get five weeks of vacation and many will take up to three weeks of this in July or August.

Conversations and Behavior

The most important aspect of French behavior is the emphasis on courtesy and formality. When meeting someone, it is customary to shake their hand. But, handshakes in France are light and quick ? a strong handshake is considered aggressive. Good posture is important to the French ? so be sure to stand up straight.

Do not address a business associate by their first name unless invited to do so. The basic courtesy title for women is ?Madame? and is ?Monsieur? for men. ?Mademoiselle? is considered old-fashioned and should be avoided.

Sometimes, the French will introduce themselves using the last name followed by their first name. This can be confusing if they both sound like first names. It is fine to ask for clarification if needed.

When engaging in conversation avoid topics related to individual political views or other personal matters. Stick to topics such as sports, art, music and food. Be prepared to discuss your own countries history and political system.

There are many common gestures and behaviors that are considered offensive in France. Be sure to avoid the following:

- Chewing gum in public

- Putting your hand in your pockets while in public

- Slapping an open palm over a closed fist

- Snapping fingers

- The OK symbol (forming a circle with the thumb and forefinger) actually means zero or useless in France. Use the thumbs up instead.
