Djurisics career night leads Dogs past Florida AM

ATHENS -- Nemanja Djurisic scored a career-high 21 points and Georgia won its third straight Saturday 82-73 over Florida A&M.

For Georgia (5-7), Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 11 and Brandon Morris 10.

Florida A&M (4-8) was led by Muhammad Abdul-Aleem, who came off the bench to score 16 points and grab a game-high 11 rebounds. James Adams added 12 and Markee Teal 10.

Georgia led the entire game, mostly by double figures, but the Rattlers took advantage of a 7-minute cold spell by the Bulldogs in the second half to cut the deficit to six, 53-47, with 12:53 to play.

But Donte' Williams and Caldwell-Pope combined for three baskets in the paint to push the lead back to 59-47.

The Rattlers hit 7 of 15 3-point shots in the first half, but missed all 11 long-range shots in the second half. Florida A&M also struggled from the line, hitting 12 of 25 attempts.

The first half was a shooting clinic as both teams hit well from beyond the 3-point line. The Bulldogs made 7 of 11 from long range.

Florida A&M's problem, however, was that it had trouble shooting inside the arc. The Rattlers made 7 of 19 from inside the line, and five of those two-pointers came in the last 4 minutes of the half.

Georgia's Caldwell-Pope entered the game as the leading scorer in the Southeastern Conference, averaging 18.1 points per game. He was scoreless until he converted a breakaway opportunity with a slam dunk with 5:25 to go in the half.

Georgia scored the first eight points of the game. Back-to-back 3s by Florida A&M's Jamari Bradshaw closed the deficit to 17-15 with 11:27 to go in the half. But a 15-0 run by the Bulldogs pushed Georgia to a 42-24 lead, capped by Djurisic's 3-pointer with 4:06 to go before halftime.

Georgia led 49-36 at intermission.

The Bulldogs started slowly in the second half, scoring just one field goal in the first 7 minutes. The Rattlers got within six at 53-47 when Onyekachukwu Odi hit a pair of free throws with 12:53 to play.

Georgia responded with three baskets in the paint, a dunk by Williams, a follow by Caldwell-Pope and a layup by Williams to stretch the lead to 59-47.

Florida A&M made one last surge, cutting into the lead 78-71 with 42 seconds to go after a basket by Adams. The Rattlers forced a turnover on the inbounds play but another missed 3 ended the comeback attempt.

Need a New Year's Resolution? Choose to Believe In Free Will!

We?re approaching the end of one year and the beginning of another, when people resolve to quit smoking, swill less booze, gobble less ice cream, jog every day, or every other day, work harder, or less hard, be nicer to kids, spouses, ex-spouses, co-workers, read more books, watch less TV, except Homeland, which is awesome. In other words, it?s a time when people seek to alter their life trajectories by exercising their free will. Some mean-spirited materialists deny that free will exists, and this specious claim?not mere physiological processes in my brain?motivates me to reprint a defense of free will that I wrote for The New York Times 10 years ago:

When I woke this morning, I stared at the ceiling above my bed and wondered: To what extent will my rising really be an exercise of my free will? Let?s say I got up right . . . now. Would my subjective decision be the cause? Or would computations unfolding in a subconscious neural netherworld actually set off the muscular twitches that slide me out of the bed, quietly, so as not to wake my wife (not a morning person), and propel me toward the door?

One of the risks of science journalism is that occasionally you encounter research that threatens something you cherish. Free will is something I cherish. I can live with the idea of science killing off God. But free will? That?s going too far. And yet a couple of books I?ve been reading lately have left me brooding over the possibility that free will is as much a myth as divine justice.

The chief offender is The Illusion of Conscious Will (MIT Press, 2002), by Daniel M. Wegner, a psychologist at Harvard. What makes Wegner?s critique more effective than others I?ve read over the years is that it is less philosophical than empirical, drawing heavily upon recent research in cognitive science and neurology. Wegner also carries out his vivisection of free will with a disturbing cheerfulness, like a neurosurgeon joking as he cuts a patient?s brain.

We think of will as a force, but actually, Wegner says, it is a feeling ? ?merely a feeling,? as he puts it ? of control over our actions. I think, ?I?m going to get up now,? and when I do a moment later, I credit that feeling with having been the instigating cause. But as we all know, correlation does not equal causation.

When neurologists make patients? limbs jerk by electrically zapping certain regions of their brains, the patients often insist they meant to move that arm, and they even invent reasons why. Neurologists call these erroneous, post hoc explanations ?confabulations,? but Wegner prefers the catchier ?intention inventions.? He suggests that whenever we explain our acts as the outcome of our conscious choice, we are engaging in intention invention, because our actions actually stem from countless causes of which we are completely unaware.

He cites experiments by psychologist Benjamin Libet in which subjects pushed a button whenever they chose while noting the time of their decision as displayed on a clock. The subjects took 0.2 seconds on average to push the button after they decided to do so. But an electroencephalograph monitoring their brain waves revealed that the subjects? brains generated a spike of brain activity 0.3 seconds before they decided to push the button. The meaning of these widely debated findings, Wegner says, is that our conscious willing is an afterthought, which ?kicks in at some point after the brain has already started preparing for the action.?

Other research has indicated that the neural circuits underlying our conscious sensations of intention are distinct from the circuits that actually make our muscles move. This disconnect may explain why we so often fail to carry out our most adamant decisions. This morning, I may resolve to drink only one cup of coffee instead of two, or to take a long run through the woods. But I may do neither of these things (and chances are I won?t).

Sometimes our intentions seem to be self-thwarting. The more I tell myself to go back to sleep instead of obsessing over free will, the wider awake I feel. Wegner attributes these situations to ?ironic processes of mental control.? I prefer Edgar Allan Poe?s phrase ?the imp of the perverse,? which more vividly evokes that mischievous ?other? we sense lurking within us.

Brain disorders can exacerbate experiences of this kind. Schizophrenics perceive their very thoughts as coming from malevolent external sources. Those who have lasting damage to the corpus callosum, a neural cable that transmits signals between the brain?s hemispheres, may be afflicted with alien-hand syndrome. They may end up, Wegner says, like Dr. Strangelove, whose left hand frantically tried to keep his right from jutting out in Nazi salutes.

Perfectly healthy people may lose their sense of control over actions their brains have clearly initiated. When we are hypnotized, playing with Ouija boards, or speaking in tongues, we may feel as though someone or something else is acting through us, whether a muse, ghost, devil, or deity. What all these examples imply is that the concept of a unified self, which is a necessary precondition for free will, may be an illusion.

Wegner quotes Arthur C. Clarke?s remark that ?any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.? Because we cannot possibly understand how the fantastically complex machines in our skulls really work, Wegner says, we explain our behavior in terms of such silly, occult concepts as ?the self? and ?free will.? Our belief in our personal identity and self-control does have its uses, Wegner grants; without it, ?we might soon be wearing each other?s underclothing.?

Maybe I should lighten up and embrace my lack of free will and a self. That?s what Susan Blackmore, a British psychologist and a practitioner of Zen, advises. In her book The Meme Machine (Oxford University Press, 1999), she contends that our minds are really just bundles of memes, the beliefs and habits and predilections that we catch from one another like viruses. Take all of the memes out of a mind, and there is no self left to be free.

Once you realize you have no control over your destiny, says Blackmore, you will expend less energy regretting past decisions and fretting over future ones, and you will be more appreciative of the vital present. Be here now, and so on. In other words, true freedom comes from accepting there is no freedom.

Blackmore?s reasoning strikes me as less spiritual than Orwellian. To me, choices, freely made, are what make life meaningful. Moreover, our faith in free will has social value. It provides us with the metaphysical justification for ethics and morality. It forces us to take responsibility for ourselves rather than consigning our fate to our genes or God. Free will works better than any other single criterion for gauging the vitality of a life, or a society.

Theologians have proposed that science still allows faith in a ?God of the gaps,? who dwells within those shadowy realms into which science has not fully penetrated, such as the imaginary time before the Big Bang banged. In the same way, maybe we can have a free will of the gaps. No science is more riddled with gaps, after all, than the science of human consciousness.

As I lay in bed this morning, however, my faith in free will wavered. Scanning my mind for something resembling will, I found a welter of roiling thoughts and anti-thoughts, a few of which transcended virtuality long enough for closer inspection. One thought was that, no matter what my intellect decides, I?m compelled to believe in free will.

Abruptly my body, no doubt bored with all this pointless cogitation, slipped out of bed, padded to the door, and closed it behind me.

Junior Dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez: Final Preview and Prediction

Tonight from Las Vegas, the UFC heavyweight title is on the line between Junior "Cigano" dos Santos, and the former champion, Cain Velasquez.

Dos Santos and Velasquez have met before, at the first UFC on Fox card last November. In that fight, dos Santos knocked out Velasquez in 64 seconds and became the new champion.

From there, both fighters would compete again at UFC 146, although against different opponents. Dos Santos would defend his heavyweight title against the former champion, Frank Mir, and Velasquez would face off against Antonio Silva in his first UFC fight. Dos Santos beat Mir by second-round TKO and Velasquez beat Silva by first-round TKO.

Tonight, dos Santos and Velasquez will meet for a second time, this time with dos Santos as champion. The first fight between these two lasted only 64 seconds, but there is still plenty that can be taken from that.

Velasquez was throwing a lot of leg kicks, and his game plan clearly involved taking away the lead leg of dos Santos. Additionally, expect Velasquez to shoot early and shoot often. He has seen the power of dos Santos, and he doesn't want to see it again.

Dos Santos is going to do what he always does: stand up with his opponents, avoid takedowns and pick his opponents apart with his boxing. Dos Santos has incredible speed and power, and he will use that to his advantage, as he always does.

    Who Wins?

  • Junior dos Santos (c)

  • Cain Velasquez

Many are saying that the first fight between these two was a fluke, or that Velasquez's knee injury affected the fight heavily. That may or may not be true, but don't expect anything to change this time around. Dos Santos will still come out with a knockout victory, it just won't be as fast as last time.

By the fourth round, dos Santos will land an uppercut and put Cain out cold to defend his title and tie the record for most consecutive UFC heavyweight title defenses.

Is Your Healthcare Data Vulnerable to Hacks?

Is healthcare information the next major target for hackers? A year-long investigation by the Washington Post asserts that online healthcare data is susceptible to hacks, especially considering the increasing number of ways patients and doctors can access health information these days.

?I have never seen an industry with more gaping security holes,? Avi Rubin, a computer scientist and technical director of the Information Security Institute at Johns Hopkins University, told the The Post. ?If our financial industry regarded security the way the health-care sector does, I would stuff my cash in a mattress under my bed.?

Mobile technology, including video conferencing and apps, have helped to spread healthcare to rural communities and allow consumers to be proactive in monitoring their own health. The downside of this, according to research by The Post, is that hackers might easily be able to access this data for identity theft and disruptive attack purposes.

Other groups and organizations have known about the vulnerabilities in healthcare information systems for some time. In May, the Department of Homeland Security issued a warning reminding consumers that although mobile devices make accessing healthcare information more convenient, it also leaves users vulnerable to data breaches. And in 2007, The Post reports, the eHealth Vulnerability Reporting Program, a group that included senior healthcare officials, concluded that ?commercial EHR systems are vulnerable to exploitation given existing industry practices? and that the ?skill level required to exploit is low.?

Perhaps the lack of security is because compared to government, military and major corporations, the healthcare sector's online security hasn't been compromised often enough to make it a huge priority. Although, the healthcare sector hasn't been without security breaches.

According to GovernmentHealthIT the largest healthcare security breach of 2012 happened to the Utah Department of Health where 780,000 patient's personal information was hacked.

Are you concerned with the security of your personal health data? Tell us in the comments.

An open letter from The War Z's creator to the gaming community ...

Game Info

GAME NAME: The WarZ

DEVELOPER(S): Hammerpoint Interactive

PLATFORM(S): PC

GENRE(S): Survival

RELEASE DATE(S): 19 December 2012

Sergey Titov, The War Z?s Executive Producer, has taken to the game?s forum to post an open letter to the gaming community, apologising for mistakes Hammerpoint Interactive has made with the recent release (and Steam takedown) of the game.

Here?s an exerpt from the letter:

First of all a very big and sincere ?Thank You!? to all of you. We are really proud of the community we have formed with you guys. Every day we have hundreds of thousands of players on our servers, and this is a life-changing event for the team and me. We are blessed to have you as members of the community and we are well aware that without you the game would be nothing.

Along with that thanks, though, I need to admit that we failed to effectively communicate some of our plans and actions to both our existing players and to our new prospective players. This failure to communicate resulted in some very negative feedback from some members of our community, but while it might be easy to label them as ?haters? or some other dismissive term, in all honesty this is my fault. I became arrogant and blinded by the early success and quick growth of The War Z, our increasing number of players, numbers we were getting from surveys, etc., and I chose not to notice the concerns and questions raised by these members of the game community as well as others. This failure is entirely on my shoulders and if anything I owe thanks to that vocal minority and admit that I should have paid attention sooner. I chose instead to concentrate on the bigger picture ? my dream of turning The War Z from being a game developed by a small indie team into a large online venture, instead of addressing small things first and staying focused on the game issues. At the end my arrogance led us to the moment, when all those small things finally caught up and created a ?perfect storm? that affected all of our community members. For that I?m truly sorry and apologize to all of our community as well as the larger PC gaming community that is not yet playing The War Z.

I do not take this situation lightly, and last week events were especially humbling for me. I?ve experienced a range of emotions, most of which centered on regret for not having addressed some of the issues differently than we did, but we can?t change the past. The only thing we can do is to be sure that we won?t repeat the same mistakes in the future. I have realized that as the leader of this ship, I missed all early warnings that were saying, ?Your community is not as happy as you think they are, you need to alter course.? I was too focused on how great we are and how a small independent team got their first game to over 700,000 users in a two-month period. Though that is something to be very proud of, allowing that to overshadow the existing community and their satisfaction was poor judgment.

Titov also stressed that the current build of The War Z is its ?Foundation Release,? and as such is a ?first-stage release that [Hammerpoint] use[s] as a foundation to build upon?.

Do you take this apology as sincere, or just another nail in the coffin of?The War Z?

Novel role of BRCA1 in regulating the survival of skin stem cells identified

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Researchers have uncovered a novel role of BRCA1 in regulating the survival of skin stem cells.

Our DNA, which stores our genetic information, is constantly submitted to damage. If not properly repaired, DNA damage can lead to cell death, which may in turn lead to tissue exhaustion and aging, or induce mutations resulting in uncontrolled cell proliferation and cancer. Brca1 is a key gene that mediates DNA repair. Mutations in Brca1 lead to familial and sporadic breast and ovarian cancer in humans.

In this study published in Genes and Development, researchers led by C?dric Blanpain, MD/PhD, Professor at Universit? libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and WELBIO investigator, showed the critical role of Brca1 for the maintenance of hair follicle stem cells.

Peggy Sotiropoulou and colleagues showed that upon deletion of the breast cancer associated gene Brca1 in the epidermis, hair follicle cells show high levels of DNA damage and cell death, which induce hyperproliferation and finally exhaustion of hair follicle stem cells resulting in hair follicle degeneration. In contrast, the other types of stem cells located in the epidermis, which are forming the skin barrier and the sebaceous glands, are maintained and continue to function normally despite the absence of BRCA1, demonstrating the different requirement for BRCA1 in the distinct types of adult stem cells. "We were very surprised to see that distinct types of cells residing within the same tissue may exhibit such profoundly different responses to the deletion of the same, crucial gene for DNA repair gene" comments Peggy Sotiropoulou, the first author of this study.

This work is very important to understand the DNA repair mechanisms in different types of adult stem cells and at different stages of their activation. If other stem cells of the body also require BRCA1 for their survival, this result may potentially explain why Brca1 mutations in women lead preferentially to the development of only breast and ovarian cancers.

This work was supported by the FNRS, WELBIO, the program d'excellence CIBLES of Wallonia, a research grant from the Fondation Contre le Cancer, the Fondation ULB, the Fonds Yvonne Bo?l, and the Fonds Gaston Ithier, a starting grant of the European Research Council (ERC) and the EMBO Young Investigator Program.

A Rare Promo Code For Stylish People Is Your Dealzmodo-Exclusive Deal of the Day

Although the deals universe is waking up from its pre-Christmas torpor and shifting into a Boxing-week frenzy, it's a different kind of sale we're seeing. Instead of promo codes that take a percentage off everything in the store, we're seeing sale sections balloon. That means instead of deals on stuff you actually want, a lot of sales this week are deals on stuff that nobody wanted—and that's why those products are on clearance. More »

A Yankee?s Thoughts on Dallas' Winter Weather: Texas Isn?t Cold

FIRST PERSON | DALLAS -- "Dallas feels like Rochester!"

That was the friendly greeting I received on the way into work this morning. I was wearing my college hoodie from the University of Rochester, so the reference to Rochester, N.Y., was understandable. However, let me correct Dallas residents' perception of their cities winters. Dallas is not like Rochester.

I come from Syracuse and, in Upstate New York, snow isn't measured in inches. We use feet. In Upstate New York, it's not cold until the snow squeaks beneath your feet -- at around 15 degrees. In Upstate New York, we don't complain about scraping off our cars. We keep ice scrapers in our trunks year-round. In New York, our snow plows are twice as wide as the road. The biggest difference, though, is that in Upstate New York, whether Syracuse, Rochester or Buffalo, we don't see the sun. From about November to March, the sky stays grey.

So, Dallasites, please don't tell me Dallas is like Rochester. Texas is not like New York. It is not cold. If I thought it was cold, then you wouldn't see me in shorts. The snow in Dallas was beautiful -- until it melted when the sun rose. Scraping your car is not the most novel activity in the world; millions of people north of the Mason-Dixon Line do it every winter day. Dallas does not have snow plows. Dallas-Fort Worth has pickup trucks with sand in their beds. Finally, please do not tell me Texas is like New York because I can see the sun down here.

New Toshiba camera sensor lets you refocus after the shot, plans 2013 launch in smartphones and tablets

New Toshiba camera sensor lets you refocus after you take the shot, plans to launch in smartphones and tablets next year

Hoping for some after-the-fact focusing in your next smartphone camera? Well, you'll have to wait around a year, but Toshiba's planning exactly that with a new module that houses an array of 500,000 tiny lenses. These are layered in front of the camera sensor, which can then capture slightly different images from compound lens arrangements. These can then be combined in a "complete" picture using Toshiba's own software. The camera will also be able to measure the distance between objects in the shot -- similar to how 3D images are captured -- with the user then able to focus on both close and distant detail, or even create images that are in-focus throughout. Toshiba says the module will also be able to capture video with a similar degree of focus management -- something that Lytro hasn't got around to just yet. The sensor is still a work in progress, but the manufacturer plans to commercialize the module before the end of 2013. Toshiba is looking to ally itself with multiple smartphone (and tablet) makers -- and here's hoping that it finds its way into a device outside of Japan.

(AP) ? U.S. holiday retail sales this year grew at the weakest pace since 2008, when the nation was in a deep recession. In 2012, the shopping season was disrupted by bad weather and consumers' rising uncertainty about the economy.

A report that tracks spending on popular holiday goods, the MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse, said Tuesday that sales in the two months before Christmas increased 0.7 percent, compared with last year. Many analysts had expected holiday sales to grow 3 to 4 percent.

In 2008, sales declined by between 2 percent and 4 percent as the financial crisis that crested that fall dragged the economy into recession. Last year, by contrast, retail sales in November and December rose between 4 percent and 5 percent, according to ShopperTrak, a separate market research firm. A 4 percent increase is considered a healthy season.

Shoppers were buffeted this year by a string of events that made them less likely to spend: Superstorm Sandy and other bad weather, the distraction of the presidential election and grief about the massacre of schoolchildren in Newtown, Conn. The numbers also show how Washington's current budget impasse is trickling down to Main Street and unsettling consumers. If Americans remain reluctant to spend, analysts say, economic growth could falter next year.

In the end, even steep last-minute discounts weren't enough to get people into stores, said Marshal Cohen, chief research analyst at the market research firm NPD Inc.

"A lot of the Christmas spirit was left behind way back in Black Friday weekend," Cohen said, referring to the traditional retail rush the day after Thanksgiving. "We had one reason after another for consumers to say, 'I'm going to stick to my list and not go beyond it.'"

Holiday sales are a crucial indicator of the economy's strength. November and December account for up to 40 percent of annual sales for many retailers. If those sales don't materialize, stores are forced to offer steeper discounts. That's a boon for shoppers, but it cuts into stores' profits.

Last-minute shoppers like Kris Betzold, of Carmel, Ind., embraced discounts that were available before Christmas.

"We went out yesterday, and I noticed that the sales were even better now than they were at Thanksgiving," said Betzold Monday while shopping at an upscale mall in Indianapolis. Betzold, who said the sluggish economy prompted her and her husband to be more frugal this year, noted that she saved about $25 on a Kindle Fire she found at Best Buy.

Spending by consumers accounts for 70 percent of overall economic activity, so the eight-week period encompassed by the SpendingPulse data is seen as a critical time not just for retailers but for manufacturers, wholesalers and companies at every other point along the supply chain.

The SpendingPulse data include sales by retailers in key holiday spending categories such as electronics, clothing, jewelry, luxury goods, furniture and other home goods between Oct. 28 and Dec. 24. They include sales across all payment methods, including cards, cash and checks.

It's the first major snapshot of retail sales during the holiday season through Christmas Eve. A clearer picture will emerge next week as retailers like Macy's and Target report revenue from stores open for at least a year. That sales measure is widely watched in the retail industry because it excludes revenue from stores that recently opened or closed, which can be volatile.

Despite the weak numbers out Tuesday, retailers still have some time to make up lost ground. The final week of December accounts for about 15 percent of the month's sales, said Michael McNamara, vice president for research and analysis at MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse. As stores offer steeper discounts to clear some of their unsold inventory, they may be able to soften some of the grim results reflected in Tuesday's data.

Still, this season's weak sales could have repercussions for 2013, he said. Retailers will make fewer orders to restock their shelves, and discounts will hurt their profitability. Wholesalers, in turn, will buy fewer goods, and orders to factories for consumer goods will likely drop in the coming months.

In the run-up to Christmas, analysts blamed the weather and worries about the "fiscal cliff" for putting a damper on shopping. Superstorm Sandy battered the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states in late October. Many in the New York region were left without power, and people farther inland were buried under feet of snow. According to McNamara, the Northeast and mid-Atlantic account for 24 percent of U.S. retail sales.

Buying picked up in the second half of November as retailers offered more discounts and shoppers waylaid by the storm finally made it into malls, he said.

But as the weather calmed, the threat of the "fiscal cliff" picked up. In December, lawmakers remained unable to reach a deal that would prevent tax increases and government spending cuts set to take effect at the beginning of 2013. If the cuts and tax hikes kick in and stay in place for months, many economists expect the nation could fall back into recession.

The news media discussed this possibility more intensely as December wore on, making Americans increasingly aware of the economic troubles they might face if Washington is unable to resolve the impasse. Sales never fully recovered, Cohen said.

The results were weakest in areas affected by Sandy and a more recent winter storm in the Midwest. Sales declined by 3.9 percent in the mid-Atlantic and 1.4 percent in the Northeast compared with last year. They rose 0.9 percent in the north central part of the country.

The West and South posted gains of between 2 percent and 3 percent, still weaker than the 3 percent to 4 percent increases expected by many retail analysts.

Online sales, typically a bright spot, grew only 8.4 percent from Oct. 28 through Saturday, according to SpendingPulse. That's a dramatic slowdown from the online sales growth of 15 to 17 percent seen in the prior 18-month period, according to the data service.

Online sales did enjoy a modest boost after the recent snowstorm that hit the Midwest, McNamara said. Online sales make up about 10 percent of total holiday business.

Meeting of shippers, East/Gulf dockworkers called

WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) -- Federal mediators seeking to avoid a walkout of thousands of East Coast and Gulf Coast dockworkers from Massachusetts to Texas have called a meeting of them and shipping companies.

The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service said Monday that Director George Cohen called the meeting of the International Longshoremen's Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance before the Dec. 29 expiration of the dockworkers' contract extension. It said the parties have agreed to attend the meeting but wouldn't elaborate.

Talks between the dockworkers and the shipping companies broke down Dec. 18, just weeks after a critical West Coast port complex was crippled by a strike involving a few hundred workers. Issues including wages are unresolved, but the key sticking point is container royalties, which are payments to union workers based on cargo weight.

Port operators and shipping companies, represented by the Marine Alliance, want to cap the royalties at last year's levels. They say the royalties have morphed into a huge expense unrelated to their original purpose and amount to a bonus averaging $15,500 a year for East Coast workers already earning more than $50 an hour.

The longshoremen's union says the payments are an important supplemental wage, not a bonus.

The union represents 14,500 workers at more than a dozen ports extending south from Boston and handling 95 percent of all containerized shipments from Maine to Texas, about 110 million tons' worth.

The New York-New Jersey ports handle the most cargo on the East Coast, valued at $208 billion last year. The other ports that would be affected by a strike are Boston; Delaware River; Baltimore; Hampton Roads, Va.; Wilmington, N.C.; Charleston, S.C.; Savannah, Ga.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Port Everglades, Fla.; Miami; Tampa, Fla.; Mobile, Ala.; New Orleans; and Houston.

Retailers fear another strike could have catastrophic effects and have asked President Barack Obama to intervene.

The National Retail Federation wrote to Obama last week and asked him to use "all means necessary" to head off a strike.

"We foresee this as a national economic emergency, to be honest," said Jonathan Gold, the group's vice president of supply chain and customs policy.

Billions of dollars in commerce at businesses nationwide could be affected, from auto manufacturers awaiting parts to the truckers who deliver them, Gold said.

NASA Plans To "Lasso" Asteroid and Turn It Into Space Station

People keep touting the idea of mining metals from asteroids and using it to build spacecraft outside of the earth's gravity well, but do we actually know how to do that?

The mining side of things seems relatively straight-forward (not easy, but you wouldn't need anything radically new), but smelting and refining significant amounts of ore in low gravity could be rather difficult. As far as I understand, a traditional iron smelting plant uses gravity to help with the purification, allowing the slag to float to the surface, before tapping the good quality iron from the bottom of the blast furnace.

It seems like purifying and working ore in space would require entirely new ways of working with the raw materials. Perhaps using some kind of high temperature centrifuge to spin and separate the material.

I'm not saying it's not possible, but it doesn't seem quite as easy as some of the more excitable science-fictiony plans for space exploration treat it. Many of these plans feature major problems to solve that get glossed over as minor technicalities.

Watch All of This Year's Space-Jumping, Head-Spinning World Records

Between Felix Baumgartner's insane space jump, and Spanish paraglider Horacio Llorens' 568-looper of a dive, we've had some pretty awesome world records broken this year. Of course it's hard if not impossible to catch all of them, so Guinness World Records whipped up a year-end summary, and it's well worth the watch. Not all of them are jumping from the stratosphere, but all these folks are pretty impressive nonetheless. What did you do today? [Laughing Squid] More »

(AP) ? The Sandy Hook section of Newtown was a gathering place this weekend for hundreds of people drawn to the scene of the recent massacre to share in the community's mourning and come to terms with the shocking school tragedy.

The village's downtown was clogged with traffic Sunday, with license plates from all across New England and beyond.

Residents across Newtown, meanwhile, were seeking to move forward through faith, community and a determination to seize their future. Many have taken advantage of counseling services.

Both groups are trying in their own way to cope with the puzzling Dec. 14 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School that took the lives of 20 children and six adults. Police say the gunman killed his mother before heading to the school and committed suicide afterward.

People with bouquets of flowers, teddy bears and cameras walked along the closed road to the makeshift memorial near the school. Mark Burkhart brought his wife and daughter from Wingdale, N.Y., to pay their respects.

"We felt we had to come here to grieve a little bit," he said. "You find yourself not sure what to do or what to say, so this kind of helps."

Connor Collier, 21, of Newtown, said visitors earlier in the week were mostly with the media. But that changed during the weekend to "just regular people" from as far away as Washington State and Florida.

"Frankly, I like this a lot better. Everybody wants to help," said Collier, who has spent the past week near the village Christmas tree selling green and white bracelets that read, "Angels of Sandy Hook." He said he has raised $40,000 for a fund established for the victims.

A man dressed as Santa greeted visitors Sunday while a group of saxophone players from Newtown High School serenaded the crowd with Christmas carols.

Anne Spillane, 51, of Sandy Hook, drove some of the band members, including her daughter. She said the brother of one band member was killed in the shooting. He was one of several victims the Sillane family knew.

She said she and others in town have been buoyed by the outpouring of support.

A family that lives about three hours away in New Bedford, Mass., came Saturday with a life-sized Santa Claus that held a scroll with the names of all the victims engraved on it, Sillane said.

And a police officer from New Britain gave her a box of homemade Christmas ornaments with the names of each victim on them, Sillane said.

"I gave those to our monsignor, and he's going to give them to the families," she said. "People are just so good. We understand. They just want to do something."

At religious services in Newtown on Sunday, parishioners recognized their church leaders for helping them to cope with the shooting deaths.

After the Sunday service at Newtown's Trinity Episcopal Church, the Rev. Kathleen Adams-Shepherd received hugs and kisses from a long line of parishioners. She choked up as she read the names of the victims and offered a prayer for all of them, including gunman Adam Lanza and his slain mother, Nancy.

Monsignor Robert Weiss of the St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church thanked the community for giving him strength to get through a week filled with funerals. St. Rose of Lima lost eight children and two adults in the massacre.

"This has been the worst week of my life," Weiss said.

Deacon Rick Scinto of St. Rose of Lima said church officials will be teamed with professional counselors and therapists to provide assistance.

"I don't see us taking a lead role, but I certainly see us taking a cooperative role in any kind of counseling that they need. We have our niche. We're religious and we can talk about God and how the Lord figures in this whole mess," Scinto said.

To deal with the short-term trauma, the state sent dozens of mental health professionals to Newtown. Sessions were available every day, at a half-dozen locations. Relief also has been provided by therapy and service dogs, massage therapists, acupuncturists and art therapists, from around Connecticut and the nation.

Dennis Stratford, who works for the school district, happened to be making a delivery to Sandy Hook Elementary when the gunman attacked. He saw dead children. He saw the remains of dead children on those who survived. He waited agonizing minutes for his own child to emerge unharmed from the school. Two of his neighbors' children did not.

"I go home and cry every night, and I cry every morning," Stratford said.

He went to one counseling session, but the horrific images remain. What helps more is work: sorting through the warehouses full of gifts, delivering them where they need to go or doing whatever else needs to be done for his town.

"There were nine minutes of evil, and an infinity of goodness after that," Stratford said, sitting on a forklift loaded with gifts. "This is therapy for me."

Dirk's Site ? Learn What It Takes to do a Profitable Product Launch ...

Those who are early in their IM careers can sometimes be hard to deal with if they are not willing to learn things on their own. You can think of that in terms of background information that has been learned elsewhere about eczematreatmentsite or through experience. That is one possible area for causing confusion with those who do not possess the fine details about the topic being discussed. In fact, today?s discussion will be on topics that will not give you all the necessary background about them. You would be smart to always remember what you have just read so you will at least have a hunch that there is still more to discover. On the other hand, nothing teaches quite as well as experience, and if you discover something is missing then you will get feedback in some way. In order to successfully launch a product online, you have to consider several factors. Your product?s launch can make or break its success which is why it?s so important. Here are some steps to take to help ensure a successful launch for your product. Get the Influential to Work for You: ?Sneezers? is a name given to people who are popular within a niche by Seth Godin because those guys can make just about anything go viral. These are the people with whom you need to establish contact. Figure out which people hold the most influence in your niche and make sure that they know about the product that you are launching and convince them to help you promote it, no matter how much effort it takes. One of the most important parts of a product launch is ensuring that people actually hear you. You need to do this because nothing works as well as a personal recommendation by somebody who holds influence in your market. To ensure your success with this particular strategy is networking with as many market professionals as you can. Do Not Forget the Post Launch: Once the product has been introduced, it is time to concentrate on the post launch phase. This is a very crucial part of your product launch technique because it is obvious that you want to have more than one effective product launch. You want the sales to come in consistently, which is why you should keep providing high value to your customers and take care of them. The worst outcome would be to get plenty of sales on the launch day and none afterwards. In order to avoid that from happening, keep putting the same amount of effort in the post-launch phase too, because that?s when the real work starts. We are confident many would like to take advantage of the full power of click here in their internet business; but you have to be careful and avoid proceeding with limited knowledge in your campaigns. Obviously there is tremendous variation among small web business owners when it comes to knowledge base about marketing techniques. One answer to this perpetual problem has been marketing forums because you can get acquainted with people who are doing the same things as you. We make every effort to cover as much as we can when we produce our articles, but just remember you will be receiving an incomplete set of guidelines. So much of what happens in online business is the result of someone deciding to test something out and it leads to something new. Leverage Social Media: You?re missing out on a lot if you launch a product on the internet without using a social media to create a strong buzz. Social sites like Facebook make it easier to reach out to your prospects and provide them with regular updates. You can use social media to pass on information regarding your product as well as to keep everyone updated. These social sites will provide a massive response when you do launch your product and it may even go viral. It takes a great deal of dedication, focus and effort to make a product launch successful. It?s important that you do whatever you can to ensure the launch day is big. Once your product is out in the market with a big bang, you can expect to have consistent sales just because of the work you put in the pre-launch phase. The tips that were made in this article will help you to have a launch day that is very successful.
