What Does an Author Gain by Giving Conference Presentations ...

Filling out the forms reminded me of the benefits of giving conference presentations. Travel expenses and last-minute glitches do not negate these benefits. In fact, I leave with a sense of renewal. If you are a book author and looking for marketing opportunities, you may wish to submit some conference proposals. These are the benefits I gained.

1. Completing the form makes you consider themes. Each conference has a theme and your book or books may have themes as well. Ever since I lost four family members in 2007 I have been writing about grief reconciliation and recovery. I have two main themes, one, that grief recovery is possible, and two, that mourners can be happy again. I write about these themes because I lived them.

2. Conference talks are thinking exercises. Usually the form asks you to cite the purpose of your talk and main points. To do this, you must think of your talk as a whole, its title, its purpose, main points, and sub-points. This mental exercise may be beneficial later. I submitted an electronic proposal to one organization and as soon as I hit send I thought to myself, ?Wow, that could be a book.?

3. Attending a conference is an inspiring experience. Last summer I participated in a conference for people who have lost a child. Though attendees were in various stages of grief, grief is the experience that united us. I was inspired by the stories I heard and the courage of the people I met. You may be similarly inspired.

4. Each conference is a learning experience. Just being at a conference can get your creative juices flowing. You also have a chance to pick up on trends. At the conference for bereaved parents I discovered that many bereaved people write, or want to write, books about their experiences. In short, I had lots of competition. But I also learned my work is unique because I write about multiple losses and as someone who is raising grandchildren

5. Speaking is a book marketing opportunity. However, you can?t over-do it. One proposal form said I could mention my book or books at the beginning of my talk, and leave it at that. The conference organizers don?t want presenters to turn their talks into television commercials and I agree with this view. There is a big difference between offering help and a hard sell.

Conference organizers may ask if they can film you while you are speaking. You may also be asked to autograph books in the conference book store, another opportunity to get to know existing and future readers. Yes, giving conference talks is lots of work, but I think the benefits are worth it.

Killer silk: Making silk fibers that kill anthrax and other microbes in minutes

ScienceDaily (Mar. 14, 2012) ? A simple, inexpensive dip-and-dry treatment can convert ordinary silk into a fabric that kills disease-causing bacteria -- even the armor-coated spores of microbes like anthrax -- in minutes, scientists are reporting in the journal ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces. They describe a range of potential uses for this new killer silk, including make-shift curtains and other protective coatings that protect homes and other buildings in the event of a terrorist attack with anthrax.

Rajesh R. Naik and colleagues explain that in adverse conditions, bacteria of the Bacillus species, which includes anthrax, become dormant spores, enclosing themselves in a tough coating. These spores can survive heat, radiation, antibiotics and harsh environmental conditions, and some have sprung back to life after 250 million years. Certain chemicals -- most popular among which are oxidizing agents, including some chlorine compounds -- can destroy bacterial spores, and they have been applied to fabrics like cotton, polyester, nylon and Kevlar. These treated fabrics are effective against many bacteria, but less so against spores. The researchers tried a similar coating on silk to see if it could perform better against these hardy microbes.

They developed a chlorinated form of silk, which involves soaking silk in a solution that includes a substance similar to household bleach and letting it dry. Silk treated for just an hour killed essentially all of the E. coli bacteria tested on it within 10 minutes and did similarly well against spores of a close anthrax relative used as a stand-in. "Given the potent bactericidal and sporicidal activity of the chlorinated silk fabrics prepared in this study, silk-Cl materials may find use in a variety of applications," the authors say. Other applications, they add, include purifying water in humanitarian relief efforts and in filters or to mitigate the effects of toxic substances.

The authors acknowledge funding from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.

RoboSquirrel vs. rattlesnake: Who wins?

1 hr.

Scientists are weaseling into the minds of rattlesnakes with the help of a robotic squirrel in an effort to better understand the evolutionary arms race between the rodents and their venom-packing predators.?

As its name implies, RoboSquirrel is built to mimic a real-life ground squirrel. It even sleeps in a squirrel nest so that it smells like the real thing.

Such biorobots give scientists control over experimental variables when studying how and why animals do the things they do. That is, instead of just watching real animals, scientists can control the robots to test hypotheses about specific behaviors.

In the case of squirrel versus rattlesnake interactions, scientists know that squirrels have evolved resistance to snake venom and tend to confront rattlesnakes with a tail flagging behavior instead of fleeing at the site of their predator.

Why do they do this? Does a little tail wagging really scare off a rattlesnake?

When the squirrels are wagging their tails, their tails also heat up. Scientists think this makes the squirrels more detectable to the snakes, which are sensitive to heat, explains University of California at San Diego researcher Bree Putnam?in a guest post at the robotics blog Hizook.

While the research is in the early stages, preliminary results suggest that tail flagging keeps rattlesnakes at bay. But, when the researchers prevent tail flagging, as illustrated in the video below, RoboSquirrel gets attacked.

For more info, check out Putnam's Strike, Rattle, and Roll blog,?where she notes that coming in May is RoboSquirrel 2.0 as well as RoboKangarooRat.?

Automotive policy on made in Nigeria vehicles underway ? Aganga

By Favour Nnabugwu

A National Automotive Policy that will give priority to the patronage of vehicles assembled in Nigeria will soon be sent to the Federal Executive Council for approval.

The Minister of Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, stated this weekend at a meeting with officials of General Motors led by the Managing Director, GM South Africa and President of GM Sub-Saharan Africa, Mr. Edgar Lourencon in Abuja.

He noted that the policy, when fully implemented, would?fast-track the growth and development of the nation?s automotive industry, create jobs and generate wealth for the country.

?We are working on a new automotive policy that will prioritise the patronage of vehicles assembled in Nigeria. The policy is part of the Integrated Mass Transit Policy of President Goodluck Jonathan, which is aimed at providing efficient and affordable mass transit for Nigerians?.

?We want to leverage the policy to develop our local automotive industry by ensuring that we patronise vehicles that are assembled here in Nigeria. By so doing, we will be able to boost the productivity of our vehicle assembling plants, create jobs, generate wealth and transform our economy,? Aganga stated

Minister of Trade & Investment, Olusegun Aganga

He further explained that the Ministry had?embarked on an Investment Climate Reform?programme as part of efforts?aimed at making Nigeria the preferred hub for investors?across the world.

He said, ?The meeting I held today with officials of General Motors dwelt on their desire to come and set up an automotive plant in West Africa. The choice is whether the plant will come to Nigeria or go to Ghana.

?But we have held very fruitful discussions with them that Nigeria is the best place?for?them to establish the plant given our vast raw materials and a huge market, which is the largest in Africa, and most importantly, the fact that our country has the highest returns on investment.

He said, ?We have the potential of becoming one of the 20 leading economies in the world by 2020. During a recent meeting of international investors, a survey was conducted where they were asked which country had the potential of having the?highest returns?on investment in Africa and the investors?said Nigeria.

?Already, we have begun?the process of making it possible for investors to obtain their visas when they are coming into the country. Also, we are setting up trade and investment desks in our major missions abroad. We have commenced an Investment Climate Reform programme to improve the Ease of Doing Business in Nigeria.?

He added, ?We are in the process of establishing two committees in order to make?this happen. The first Committee is the Doing Business Committee and the second one is? the After ? Care Committee. The Doing Business and Competitiveness Committee will focus on the reports issued and the rankings of Nigeria in this subject. This is made up inter-ministerial government Committee.

They will work with a technical team, which is already working with the Department For International Development, UK and the World Bank. ?Their goal is to ensure that we improve our ranking and achievement.?

The Competitiveness Council will be led and funded by the private sector. This is because if you look at the competitiveness report, there are things that the government will do and there are things that the private sector will do. This is the structure that we have put in place to monitor and improve on our doing business ranking.

?The Investor- After-Care Committee will address the key issues and day to day problems that investors have because we realized that if they have good experience, they will make more money, expand their operations and employ more people. We are actually looking at the overall business environment and how to make it better.?

Speaking during the meeting, the Managing Director, GM South Africa and President of GM Sub-Sahara Africa, Mr. Edgar Lourencon ?Managing Director,?expressed satisfaction with the Federal?Government?s policy of prioritising the patronage ?of made in Nigeria vehicles, adding that it would help the company to take its final investment decision on where to establish its assembling plant.

He said, ?It is absolutely correct that Nigeria has the highest return on investment in Africa. As part of our operations, we have partnership with Isuzu. We want to expand our operations in bus and?trucks assembling particularly in West Africa.?

The meeting with the Minister of Trade and Investment provided us with a great opportunity to discuss ?the policy direction of the Nigerian?government ?in terms of ?that will supporting ?our investment.

?I am taking back from the meeting, a very positive feedback and feeling about Nigeria especially the fact that the government is absolutely committed to supporting the growth and development of the?economy in general and the automotive industry?in particular. This is very important for us in terms of making our investment decision in the future.?

Meditation ? Relax Your Mind | ? S-2-S Body Design - One on One ...

Meditation

Many of us go on vacation, fishing, or for a night out to relax and get away from every day stress. It?s good for your health to de-stress but sometimes we aren?t able to go fishing or even get out for the evening. There is another way to let go of stress and tension and it doesn?t require travel or cost you any money. Meditation can do wonders to relieve stress and promote overall well-being. And you don?t have to be a Buddhist or Zen master to reap the benefits.

In a nutshell, meditation involves learning to clear your mind and focus your attention and has been shown to produce positive changes in the body. Meditation can produce a calm, relaxed state, stimulate pleasure centers in the brain, help lower blood pressure, improve blood flow and digestion and increase the ability to concentrate during every day tasks. Research also suggests that meditation may be helpful in easing conditions such as anxiety, depression, chronic pain and insomnia. Some people with chronic illnesses such as cancer and heart disease use meditation to cope with physical and emotional symptoms, as well.

Quieting the mind can also help during workouts. All too often we get distracted by what we have to do after training so we aren?t focused on the moment. Being focused allows us to put more intensity into the workout, which will yield better results. Some even find exercise to be meditative because they are focused on the moment and not what will happen next or what they need to do after the workout.

There are many ways to learn meditation, including classes, books, DVDs and online programs but you can start practicing on your own with a few basics.

Start by finding a quiet spot, free from distractions, where you won?t be disturbed. Now get comfortable. You can lie down but if you worry about falling asleep, any position that will allow you to relax your entire body will do just fine. Focus your attention. Many people use a word, phrase or sound, such as the familiar ?om?, to repeat. This allows the mind to focus on one thing at a time. You can also choose to focus on your breathing or visualize a calm, peaceful scene. Some find it more effective to visualize a blank chalkboard or a TV screen with just white noise.

If you choose to focus on your breathing, you should learn to breathe properly. I will post another article on proper breathing techniques but for now, learn to breathe with your abdomen, not just your chest. Place your hand over your navel. When you inhale, your hand should rise. Practicing this will give you something to focus on to clear your mind of other thoughts.

Don?t worry about perfection, no one does it absolutely perfectly without many years of practice. It?s normal for thoughts to creep in. You just need to brush them aside and re-focus. Start small by trying to focus your mind for just a few minutes at a time. This practice will allow you work up to longer periods. Most of all, don?t get frustrated when you find it difficult to focus your thoughts. Getting frustrated or angry will only lead to more stress and that completely goes against the point of meditation. Stay calm and relaxed and if you do find yourself getting frustrated, move on and try again later.

Give meditation an honest try before dismissing it as some New Age thing. You may be pleasantly surprised at the benefits you get from it.

Until next time?

To your health and success,

Steve

Self Improvement By Learning Assertiveness

Self empowerment by empowering yourself with assertiveness

Firstly, let?s look at what is assertiveness?

Assertiveness is the capability to express how one feel and defend/fight for his rights while respecting the feelings and rights of others. Assertiveness is also often associated with?positive self-esteem and portrait a better self-image.

Why most people are not assertive? It is because they are?afraid of displeasing other and the feeling of not being liked. Are you one of these people that is guilty of this? If yes, here is your chance to learn how to be more assertive. Next question is why must we be assertive?

Assertiveness is another important aspect of our?personal?growth because if we are assertive, we can get our idea and thoughts across to the others effectively without being too pushy or?aggressively. We must stand firm to the value we have, but not to the extent of inflexibility. With this empowering element built into us, we can become a better person in life, leader at work. There are no specified methods to learn or techniques to?master, it is your conviction at heart that brings you to assertiveness.

How to become more assertive?

1. You must first built a value in your heart, stick to it and don not sway from it. Make sure this value is a positive and empowering one.

2. Do not give in to interruptions when you are?talking, instead you should say ?Just a moment, i have not finish?.

3. Draw a boundary line to clearly define your own boundaries. Make clear to the others on your boundary and must not allow them to?trespass it.?Aggressive people do have their boundaries, but they defend it in a rude and overbearing way. Take note and do not follow.

4. Must learn to say ?no? to people or ideas that are bending your values or principle, do not?afraid?to reject people.

5. Try new things that you have never done before, no?hesitation and?procrastination, just do it. Sometimes, you just need to take the first step.

You will live a life of influence, leadership, and gain the?respect?of people around you if you can learn to?respect?your own views and assert yourself.

Lottery winner. Food stamps. In Michigan. Again.

Lottery winner: Food stamps not cut off, so she continues using them. With second case of a lottery winner on food stamps, Michigan moves to tighten welfare rules.

Michigan lawmakers last year vowed to crack down when they heard an $850,000 lottery?winner?was buying groceries with food stamps. Now comes news of another lucky player getting food on the public dime ? and the Legislature still hasn't passed a law to easily detect and clamp down on the abuse.

"We were on this already but now we have two cases. I'm hoping it will hurry us along," state Rep. Dave Agema, a Republican from western Michigan, said Thursday. "It demonstrates the entitlement attitude we have in the United States. They want something for nothing."

Amanda Clayton, 24, of Lincoln Park, chose a $700,000 lump sum, before taxes, last fall after winning a $1 million jackpot on "Make Me Rich!" a Michigan?lottery?game show. A Detroit TV station approached her this week and asked why she still was using a debit-style card to make purchases under the food-stamp program.

"I thought that they would cut me off, but since they didn't I thought maybe it was OK because I'm not working," Clayton, a mother of two, told WDIV. "I feel that it's OK because I have no income, and I have bills to pay. I have two houses."

In a statement, the state Department of Human Services said it was Clayton's responsibility to report her dramatic change in wealth within 10 days. She has been dropped from the food program.

The state "relies on clients being forthcoming about their actual financial status," director Maura Corrigan said. "If they are not, and continue to accept benefits, they may face criminal investigation and be required to pay back those benefits."

Authorities have yet to announce if Clayton will face charges. The penalty for welfare fraud over $500 can go as high as four years in prison.

Clayton and her mother, Euline Clayton, did not immediately return messages seeking comment Thursday. Euline Clayton told The Detroit News that her daughter is "stressed out" from all the attention.

Clayton wasn't the first Michigan?lottery?winner?to keep public benefits. Last spring, a TV station reported that Leroy Fick, 60, of Bay County, was using the food program despite winning an $850,000 lump sum prize in 2010. He told state officials about his wealth but was allowed to temporarily keep his card because lump-sum windfalls at that time were not counted as regular income under the program.

The state has since banned anyone with assets of more than $5,000, excluding a car, from the food stamp program. That ban knocked Fick off the rolls.

Members of the Republican-controlled Legislature said they would also require the?lottery?agency to notify the welfare department about?winners. Nearly a year later, separate bills have passed the House and Senate but the work still isn't finished.

"We should have passed it last year," Agema, a sponsor, said. "It has to go to a committee. Then it has to be sent to the floor. It takes time ? too much time."

As of January, more than 1.8 million people in Michigan ? nearly 20 percent of the population ? were getting food aid at a monthly cost of $247 million to the federal government.

In the "Make Me Rich!" TV game, won by Clayton and Fick, there are various games of chance with prizes ranging from $500,000 to $2 million. There are different ways to get on the show, including a drawing among players who have submitted non-winning?lottery?tickets.

FDA links once-promising pain drugs to bone decay

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Some of the world's largest drugmakers will face an uphill battle next week in their bid to revive a class of experimental pain drugs that have been sidelined by safety concerns for nearly two years.

The Food and Drug Administration says there is a clear association between the nerve-blocking medications and reports of joint failure and bone deterioration that led the agency to halt studies of the drugs in 2010. However, the agency also notes that those side effects were less common when the drugs were used at lower doses, potentially leaving the door open for future use. The agency released its safety analysis ahead of a public meeting next week where outside experts will discuss the drugs' safety.

On Monday, Pfizer Inc., Johnson & Johnson and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals will make their case to continue studies of the drugs, with new safety precautions to protect patients.

The request to restart testing is unusual, since drugmakers often abandon research on experimental drugs that appear to have safety issues. However, with more than 50 million U.S. adults diagnosed with arthritis ? one in five ? the potential multibillion dollar market opportunity may be too big to ignore.

Pfizer says there is a compelling need for new, improved prescription pain drugs.

"For many patients, treatment of chronic pain is inadequate in part due to the limitations in the availability of effective treatments and inadequate patient and clinician knowledge about the best ways to manage chronic pain," the New York-based company states.

In three completed studies of Pfizer's tanezumab, the injection provided more pain relief than Aleve or oxycodone, according to company documents posted online.

If the drugs eventually win FDA approval though, they may be used for much narrower indications than initially envisioned. The FDA's questions for its expert panel appear designed to limit any future testing of the drugs.

"Considering what is known thus far about the risks and benefit associated with this class of biologic agents, are there any populations for which further clinical development would be acceptable?" asks one agency discussion question.

Drugmakers once touted the drugs, known as nerve growth factor inhibitors, as a potential breakthrough for treating osteoarthritis, back pain and other chronic pain conditions. For more than a century doctors have treated pain with familiar painkillers like aspirin and Advil, or powerful opiate-based drugs. Both approaches can be problematic. Anti-inflammatory painkillers like Advil can cause stomach bleeding, while opiates carry a high risk of addiction

The injectable nerve-silencing drugs offered a new approach, by blocking proteins that control pain sensations throughout the body.

But problems with the drugs began to emerge in the summer of 2010. Beginning in June, Pfizer halted studies of its experimental injection tanezumab in patients with osteoarthritis, low back pain and diabetic nerve pain. The action was requested by the Food and Drug Administration, after researchers reported that osteoarthritis actually worsened in some patients, causing joint failure in some cases.

In December the FDA put a research hold on all drugs in the class after similar problems emerged, halting studies by Johnson & Johnson and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc.

The drugmakers are expected to argue Monday that the joint deterioration was caused by a rare drug side effect caused by patients taking multiple painkillers simultaneously. According to briefing materials, Pfizer and J&J found that the bone problems almost exclusively occurred in patients taking the experimental drugs along with traditional anti-inflammatory painkillers like aspirin and Advil.

Pfizer notes that accelerated osteoarthritis has been reported with anti-inflammatory drugs since the 1960s, though an exact causal relationship has never been established. The company also speculates that some patients who experienced side effects may have been predisposed to bone fractures that exacerbate arthritis.

The FDA's analysis published Thursday supports the companies' theory of the role of other drugs, noting that the side effects were worst among patients taking both the new drugs and older painkillers. However, the agency notes that Pfizer's tanezumab was still associated with bone problems even when used alone. The FDA analyzed nearly 500 cases of bone damage reported by all three drugmakers studying the medications.

Pfizer executives are expected to argue for continued testing of the newer drugs, with restrictions on combining them with older painkillers. Additionally, if patients do not improve after taking a few doses, the drugs would be discontinued.

Microsoft: there's a limit to Tango's love (for 256MB devices, anyway)

Microsoft's going after the low-end market with devices like the Lumia 610 and its brethren. The handset's biggest limitation is that it only packs 256MB RAM and Redmond spent last week imploring developers to slim down their apps or face ghettoization. Now the company's revealing what else will be missing from Tango's cheapie iteration: Video podcasts, Bing local scout, fast app switching, automatic photo uploading, HD video playback (with certain codecs) and background agents will all be disabled. On the upside, this efficiency drive should ensure Windows Phone apps remain as lithe and responsive as its interface is, developers interested in learning more can head down to our source link for a dash of nitty and a spoonful of gritty.

Update: To clarify, the fast app switching situation is a little more nuanced: software with a RAM footprint over 90MB will be "tombstoned" on deactivation, but those occupying less memory should resume just fine.

8 Tips For Selling To Baby Boomers - Retirement Homes

Your continued success in selling retirement properties to Baby Boomers depends on your ability to connect with their uniqueness. By understanding how those in their mid-40s to mid-60s and older adults are different as they age, you can connect more effectively with prospects and sell more properties. Here are eight sales tips to help you:

1. Find out what?s going on in their lives
They want to know what your community offers, and balance those against the experiences they want in retirement. Ask them, ?What do you want retirement to be like?? You?ll find their answer to be very individualized. Show them how your community will satisfy their needs. Use direct quotes from other satisfied Boomer buyer like themselves to explain your case.

2. Be authentic
Boomers in reality are professional ?consumerologists.? They have bought it all and have in-depth experience both good and bad. They know inherently when your sales pitch is not true, or lacks realism. Begin by showing you care about them. They want to be treated as individuals not as prospects. Most of all, they want to trust you.

3. Relate to their families
The sense of family is a deep, emotional feeling that drives most purchasing behavior. Show them your interest in families with pictures of your own children or relatives. Talk about your family. More than 80% of people over age 60 are grandparents. Focus on the emotional connection between older adults and their grandparents. Describe ways in which living at that location can enhance those family relationships.

4. Connect with the right side of the brain
Modern research shows that story telling increases the flow of adrenaline to the brain and helps us store and recall more easily. Images are stored in a different place in the brain than the words that describe those images. Tell stories about other buyers.

5. Control the physical setting
Make sure they are comfortable in your office. Offer them the most comfortable chairs. Have several sets of reader glasses nearby for them to use if they forget their own. Use a large barrel pen so it?s easy for them to write.

6. Don?t call them ?senior citizens? or ?Boomers?
Research shows that about half of people of age don?t like these terms. Don?t use labels. If you must, refer to them as, ?people like yourself, whom I deal with.? Treat them as individuals, something that is very important to them.

7. More sensitive to feelings than intellect
Decisions are made on the basis of feelings, not intellect. Intellect is used to understand; feelings are used to decide. When looking for a reaction to what you have presented, ask them, ?How does that feel to you?? not ?Does that make sense to you??

8. They want independence and never want to lose control
Use words that depict people in their 50s, 60s, and 70s as maintaining their independence. It?s the key concept for selling as retirement nears. Give them several options and let them decide. A key attitude for Boomers, especially, is they want things simplified but they don?t want to lose control. They want to make the retirement housing decision.

Medical bills can cause lingering credit pain

Here's an added challenge if you're struggling to pay a medical bill: Your credit can be wrecked if the doctor or hospital kicks your unpaid bill to a collection agency.

A growing number of Americans are discovering this unexpected land mine when they refinance or take out a loan. The Commonwealth Fund, a private foundation that sponsors health care research, estimates that 22 million Americans were contacted by collection agencies for unpaid medical bills in 2005. That increased to 30 million Americans in 2010.

People with wrecked credit scores include those who were just trying to resolve a dispute with their insurance company. It includes people owing less than $250. And even after the bill is paid, the record of the collection action can stay on a credit report for up to seven years.

That can drag down a credit score and drive up the cost of financing a home.

Mike and Laura Park thought their credit record was spotless. The Texas couple wanted to take advantage of low interest rates, so they put their house on the market and talked to a lender about a mortgage on a bigger home in the Dallas-Fort Worth suburbs.

Their credit report contained a shocker: A $200 medical bill had been sent to a collection agency. Although since paid, it still lowered their credit scores by about 100 points, and it means they'll have to pay a discount point to get the best interest rate. Cost to them: $2,500.

An estimated 3.4 million Americans have paid-off medical debt lingering on their credit reports, according to the Access Project, a research group funded by health care foundations and advocates of tougher laws on medical debt collectors.

Among them are Nathen and Melissa Cobb of Riverton, Ill., who tried to refinance their home last year. They didn't qualify for the loan because of $740 in medical bills that had been sent to a collection agency. The Cobbs were surprised because the bills ? nearly a dozen small copayments ranging from $6 to $280 ? had been paid before they tried to refinance. The collection action took their credit score from good to mediocre and is likely to mar their credit report for years.

"I'm not one of those people trying to ditch out on my bills," 34-year-old Melissa Cobb said. "I'm really frustrated."

Medical bills make up the majority of collection actions on credit reports, and most are for less than $250, according to Federal Reserve Board research.

The Parks had no idea a billing error they'd sorted out a year earlier ? they never actually owed the $200 ? could affect their credit. They didn't know the bill for a copayment on a PET scan Mike needed had been sent to a collection agency.

"We've prided ourselves in having impeccable credit. We worked hard to establish that," said Laura Park, a 51-year-old office manager married to a 53-year-old firefighter. They are going ahead with the home purchase while trying to fix their credit report.

"I'm very upset," Park said. "It's going to be a nightmare and who knows how long this is going to take to resolve."

Matt Ernst, a vice president at Mortgage Lenders of America in Overland Park, Kan., said medical collections frequently turn up on credit reports.

"We see a ton of them," Ernst said. They have an impact on financing, he said, but even he didn't realize how much until he learned that someone with a FICO score of 680 ? which is considered good, but not excellent ? will see their score drop up to 65 points because of a medical collection.

"I didn't know a medical collection would hammer it that hard," Ernst said. "Our investors require a 620 to even get a loan."

It's a problem for insured and uninsured alike. Outright billing mistakes, confusion over whether a claim will be paid by insurance and disputes between insurance companies and doctors ? all can lead to medical bills being sent to collection agencies.

Congress is considering legislation ? the Medical Debt Responsibility Act ? that would require credit agencies to delete paid-off medical debt from credit reports within 45 days.

"We're not talking about somebody buying a big screen television and not having the ability to pay. This is debt incurred because of a health condition. That makes medical debt unique," said bill co-sponsor U.S. Rep. Don Manzullo, an Illinois Republican.

The bill has bipartisan support in the House, said co-sponsor U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler, a North Carolina Democrat. Shuler said the health care industry sends delinquent bills to debt collectors quicker than any other industry.

"If it wasn't an industry that sent it straight to collections, we wouldn't be having this conversation," Shuler said. A Senate version was introduced last week.

For Illinois breast cancer survivor Lisa Lindsay, a $280 medical bill led to state troopers showing up at her home and taking her to jail in handcuffs.

Like the Parks in Texas, she, too, said it started as a billing mistake. Her hospital told her the radiology bill would be covered because she qualified for a charity care program. But the radiology doctors' office sent the bill to a collection agency and, despite Lindsay's protests and the paperwork she kept sending, the matter ended up in court.

Lindsay believed that eventually the documentation would catch up with the bill and be settled. She went to court and told a judge her story. Later, she missed a court date ? she said she was never informed of it ? and that's when the state troopers showed up. Lindsay, a 46-year-old teaching assistant from Herrin, Ill., ended up paying more than $600 because legal fees had been added to the original amount.

"I paid it in full so they couldn't do it to me again," Lindsay said. She recently testified at a hearing on aggressive debt collection practices in Illinois.

Refinancing a home loan can be affected too by unpaid medical bills ? or the appearance of unpaid medical bills.

Iraq veteran Steve Barnes and his wife, Tara, were refinancing their home through a VA program when they found out from their mortgage banker that nearly $600 in unpaid medical bills had brought down their credit scores. It means they'll have to pay an extra $1,700 in additional fees to the lender to get the lowest interest rate.

Bills for treatment last fall related to his wife's cancer had been turned over to a collection agency while Barnes was still talking with his insurance company about what would be covered, he said.

"We pay our bills," said Barnes, 33, the postmaster in Nocona, Texas. "As soon as they were brought to our attention, we paid them." But the collection could stay on their credit reports for seven years, even though it's now paid.

Debt collectors support the legislation in the House, according to ACA International, a trade association. A key foe of an earlier bill was another group representing the nation's credit bureaus. The Consumer Data Industry Association, which hasn't taken a position on the revised bill, said that lenders need to see a consumer's patterns of behavior over time and even paid-off medical debt is relevant to whether the consumer is a good risk.

Most hospitals and physician groups use collection agencies to go after late bills after 60 or 90 days, rather than hiring more staff. It makes financial sense to share the amounts collected with an agency. "If you don't collect anything, it's worth zero," said Richard Gundling of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

Hospitals started relying on debt collectors in the 1980s, said Chicago-based health care consultant Jim Unland.

"When the numbers of uninsured started to grow significantly, hospital financial staffs had the perception they were getting overloaded" with delinquent bills, Unland said. "It became easier to turn these bills over to collection agencies."

The Affordable Care Act, President Barack Obama's health care law, bars tax-exempt hospitals from using "extraordinary collection actions" until it has made "reasonable efforts" to determine whether a patient qualifies for financial assistance. But it's still unclear how that will be interpreted and whether reporting late bills to a collection agency would be considered extraordinary, Unland said.

Barnes, the Texas veteran, said he and his wife have learned something: how quickly medical bills are sent to debt collectors. "It will really happen in a blink of an eye and you won't even know it."

2 trains collide in Poland; 6 dead, dozens injured

(AP) ? Two trains collided head-on in southern Poland on Saturday evening, an accident killed at least six people, injured around 60 and appears to be one of the worst rail disasters in the country in recent years, officials said.

Both trains were traveling on the same track but toward each other and collided head-on, Andrzej Pawlowski, a member of the board of the state railway company PKP, said in an interview on the all-news station TVN24. He said one of the trains, which was traveling south from Warsaw to Krakow, should not have been on the track. The other train, headed from the eastern city of Przemysl to Warsaw, was on the correct track, Pawlowski said.

It wasn't immediately clear how the southbound train ended up on the wrong track.

Polish media broadcast images of white and green train cars that were twisted and appeared to be knocked off the tracks.

"Everything indicates that this is one of the most serious railway catastrophes of recent years in our country," Transport Minister Slawomir Nowak told TVN24 in a telephone interview. "There are people who have died, there are many injured people."

Nowak spoke as he was traveling to the site with Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Zygmunt Lukaszczyk, the governor of the region of Silesia, where the accident occurred, said at least six people were killed but that the death toll could rise. About 60 people were injured, according to a spokesman for firefighters, Pawel Fratczak.

Dozens of rescue officials and helicopters were deployed to help those injured in the collision.
