Guest columnist Michelle Collins: Why Staying Healthy Is Staying ...

?

Dear Jacqueline and Michaela,

As the latest scientific studies show, being sedentary is much worse than being overweight. People of normal weight who lead sedentary lives are at higher risk for cardiovascular disease, for example, than people who are 10 to 20 pounds overweight but stay active. Unless they engage in resistance training, most women will gain weight in their 40s and 50s because natural hormonal changes lead to muscle loss which slows their metabolisms.

Because of her sedentary lifestyle combined with her weight gain, then, my Mom developed high blood pressure and diabetes. She faced other, equally serious challenges that compounded these issues. First, she lacked the knowledge to take proper care of herself in the face of these two diseases. Second, she was saddled with an inability to make her own health a high enough priority. Third, she had an old-fashioned belief in what a proper lady should do when it came to her family obligations, and stuck by her traditions.

The consequences of these factors turned out to be severe. My mother's high glucose levels (her diabetes), despite insulin injections, led to nerve damage, causing numbness and pain particularly in her feet and creating balance problems. That forced her to grow even more sedentary and put on still more weight. That in turn brought about knee problems, fallen arches, various infections in the legs and, finally, a diagnosis of heart disease in the bargain. In short, she lost control of her health, and set in motion a snowball effect that has now put her in a wheelchair.

I was young when all this began -- in my teens when my mother was diagnosed with high blood pressure, and in my early 20s when her diabetes was discovered. And even though I was always thin, my mother's health problems served as a real wake-up call for me. I realized I might have inherited the genes that would predispose me to the same "gateway" diseases. I also learned these diseases are largely preventable.

Eventually, I made it my mission to avoid the same fate as my mother. I adopted a balanced diet involving whole foods and reasonable portion sizes. Even more important, I began exercising regularly. My goal: to be fit (as opposed to either skinny or even necessarily athletic). Fitness, to me, is a state of mind and a way of life, an avenue by which to achieve and maintain physical, emotional and cognitive health, not to mention an all-around higher quality to life itself.

After you were both born, of course, it became even more important for me to maintain that balance.

P.S. ? Please see part 3 tomorrow.

10 Tips for Starting a Home-Based Food Business : Managing ...

If you have gotten countless compliments on your cupcakes or find yourself with requests from your friends to be their personal chef for special occasions, a home-based food business might be a great way to earn extra money while doing something you enjoy. But even though frosting cakes or bottling your homemade barbecue sauce may seem more fun than work, a home-based food business is still a business. As with any business, you need to plan and research before picking up your mixer or designing labels for your salad dressing.

Here are 10 things you should know before opening a home-based food business:

1. Learn the regulations and requirements for your state and county. Your first step is to determine the rules for a home-based food business in your area. Some states, such as California, have a law that allows home-based food businesses meeting certain criteria to bypass being certified as a commercial kitchen.

?There are state and local requirements for running a business out of the home, especially if it is a food business, including zoning, business licensing and permitting, and in the food context also production and safety requirements depending on the product,? says John Gerber, lawyer with Upstart Legal. ?Failure to do this correctly will jeopardize the company?s ability to produce and sell product.?

2. There has to be a market for your business to be successful. You could have the best cupcakes on the planet or the tastiest dry rub ever invented, but if there is not a market for your product, then you will not be able to make revenue on your product. Chef Veronica Rains, co-owner of Wholesome Chow and author of Sell Your Organic Food Product recommends doing focus groups, making small batches with inexpensive packaging and selling your products to a few retail locations before fully investing in the business.

3. You should conduct your business as a legal entity. Since home-based food businesses often are built out of a hobby, many entrepreneurs in the industry make the mistake of continuing to run their business in a casual way. ?Whether as an LLC or corporation, the business owner should form an entity and operate the business as that company, as opposed to themselves individually,? Gerber says. ?The legal entity, if properly managed, will keep the liabilities of the company separate from the assets of the individual owners.? He also recommends carrying insurance, keeping business accounts separate from personal accounts and registering all products as trademarks in the company name.

4. Hire professionals when needed. While you may have designed a website for your homeowners association or taken a class in college on accounting, carefully consider hiring professionals for tasks that are outside of your realm of expertise. Although you could do these tasks, your time can often be better spent growing the business, and the result is usually of higher quality by bringing in professionals.?

5. Put everything in writing. To protect yourself and your company in the future, you need to put all relationships and work-for-hire provisions in writing. This is also especially true if friends and family have helped with the capital investment to get your business off the ground.

?If people other than the owner of the business are involved in creating or preparation of the product, the company needs to have them assign to the company any ownership rights they may have in their work,? Gerber says. He also says that provisions should be in place for vendors including website designers.

6. Having a professional image goes a long way. Even if you bake your goods wearing your pajamas while your children do homework in the next room, you want to look like a established and polished company. Take the time to have a professional looking website, brochure and business cards. Be sure that all of your product packaging reflects the image of your company and is professional.

7. Your phone will not just magically ring with orders. Many food-based entrepreneurs assume that since everyone loves their products, that people will be clamoring to buy it. Steve Brodsky, owner of personal chef company 3 Star Chefs says that's the biggest mistake he sees home-based food businesses making. It's vital to spread the word about your business. ?My suggestion would be to put as much money as you can afford into marketing/PR/advertising right out of the gate,? Brodsky says.

8. Pricing can mean the difference between success and failure. Spend time researching comparable products and determining your costs before setting prices. When Myriah Zaytoun, home-based food business owner, first started out she would price her products based on her ingredient costs, but would not include her time into the price and quickly realized that not all cooking jobs are created equal. ?You cannot make a profit if you charge $20 for a baking job that takes you four hours to complete, on top of the price of ingredients. However, if you price things too high, you risk alienating your customer-base. I have learned to carefully weigh out all factors before pricing any baking job.?

Chris Henry, owner of personal chef service Fresh! also cautions against pricing too low and says that it could set a precedent that is hard to break. You might get clients, but you won't make a reasonable profit, which can can be frustrating and make you feel as though you've wasted your time, Henry says.

9. Realize that your materials price will fluctuate. Prices for the items that you will use on a daily basis, such as flour, butter and eggs, are not static and will change based on events in the economy and industry. ?It is important that when you price out your products, that you (leave) room for the prices to fluctuate so you can weather the increases and just revisit it on a semiannual basis,? says Kelly Delaney, pastry chef and operator of Cakes for Occasions.

10. Buying in bulk can save considerable money. When Delaney was first starting out, she was trying to save money on expenses and would only buy the items that she needed for the week?s orders. But she quickly realized that while the financial outlay was more up front, that she saved considerable money by planning ahead and buying common items in bulk. ?When you purchase ahead, in bulk, you save in the future,? Delaney says.

Judge expected to rule in Bible verse banner suit

(AP) ? A group of teenage cheerleaders is expecting to hear Thursday from a Texas district judge whether they will be allowed to continue displaying Bible verses at high school football games.

The cheerleaders at Kountze High School sued district officials told them to stop using scripture ? such as, "If God is for us, who can be against us?" ? on banners displayed at football games. The district banned the use of religious messages after the Freedom From Religion Foundation complained that the messages violated the First Amendment prohibition on government establishing a religion.

State District Judge Steve Thomas issued an injunction allowing the cheerleaders to continue using Bible verses until he made a decision. He set a hearing for Thursday, when he was expected to rule on the cheerleaders' case.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott filed court papers to intervene in the lawsuit, calling the district's prohibition an unconstitutional infringement on the cheerleaders' rights to free speech. The Texas Education Code also states that schools must respect the rights of students to express their religious beliefs.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation, which is dedicated to the separation of church and state, also intervened saying in the context of a football game it was unclear who was responsible for the messages, the school or the cheerleaders.

"The speech in question is government speech or, at a minimum, school-sponsored speech," the group said in court papers. "If the majority of the cheerleaders were atheists, would a court support their 'right' to hold up a banner insulting Christianity or all believers? The district has every right to simply prohibit all run-through and on-field banners."

Gov. Rick Perry also has spoken out in favor of the cheerleaders.

"Anyone who is expressing their faith should be celebrated, from my perspective, in this day and age of instant gratification, this me-first culture that we see all too often," Perry said Wednesday. "We're a nation built on the concept of free expression of ideas. We're also a culture built on the concept that the original law is God's law, outlined in the Ten Commandments."

Earth-size Alpha Centauri B planet detected by telltale star wobble

HARPS, as the instrument is called, successfully detected a rocky planet around one of Earth?s closest neighboring stars when other tools missed it.

The instrument astronomers used to discover the small rocky planet circling the star Alpha Centauri B that was announced this week was not a glitzy new high-tech space telescope, but rather a decade-old workhorse attached to a ground observatory in Chile.

HARPS, as the instrument is called, successfully?detected a rocky planet?around one of Earth?s closest neighboring stars when other tools missed it because astronomers have had plenty of time to learn what it is capable of, planet hunter Xavier Dumusque of Geneva Observatory, Switzerland and the Center for Astrophysics at the University of Porto, Portugal, said.

After 10 years of working with HARPS, "we understand much better how the instrument works now," he added.

"And we have used a new strategy to observe the star, which allows us to average the perturbing signals" to eliminate noise.

[App Provides Up-Close Look at Far-Out Exoplanets]

Alpha Centauri Bb, as the new planet is known, has a mass about the same as Earth and is likely rocky. However, unlike Earth, it's likely roasting at 2,200 degrees F (1,204 degrees C) due to how close it is to its parent star.

HARPS, a spectrograph on the European Southern Observatory?s 3.6 meter telescope in La Silla, Chile, works by looking for telltale "wobbles" in a star, caused by an orbiting planet gravitationally tugging on the star. That means that it's much easier to find heavy, Jupiter-like planets than tiny low-mass planets.

"This technique depends on two things," Dumusque said. "The mass of the planet ? the more mass, the easier it is to detect ? and also the distance to the star. In this case, it is a small-mass planet, but it is still very close," which is what made the detection possible.

Even still, the researchers had to deal with interfering signals ? from the star itself.

[Gallery: Nearby Alien Planet Alpha Centauri Bb]

Alpha Centauri B?is one star in a two-star system, but eliminating the noise from the second star was easy, Dumusque said. But the surface activity of Alpha Centauri B itself was enough to throw off instruments. "The surface of the star is not solid. It's very high temperature. It's ... boiling, so you have some bubbles that come up to the surface. These bubbles are [an interfering] signal." Even sunspots ? tangled knots of magnetic activity found on the surface of stars, including our own sun ? can affect HARPS, since the instrument relies on Doppler effects to determine a star's wobbles. A sunspot appearing in view of HARPS can affect the star's perceived redshift and thus trick the instrument into thinking it saw a wobble.

That led to the discovery of the planet, which is "for sure" accompanied by others that scientists haven't yet found, he added. "Statistics show that if you have a very small mass planet in one system, you have other planets in the same system. With this case, with Alpha Centauri B ... we don't have the precision to find them, but for sure there are other planets in the system."

Alpha Cen Bb's gravitational effect on the star causes it to move by just 19.6 inches (50 centimeters) per second. In comparison, if alien observers wanted to discover Earth using the same method, they'd need an instrument that could detect wobbles of 3.9 inches (10 cm) per second. The Espresso instrument, scheduled to go online in 2016, will be able to observe with that precision. "With this instrument, it should be possible to discover Earth's twin," Dumusque said.

Behind the Benghazi Cover-up

On Sept. 11, scores of men with automatic weapons and RPGs launched a night assault on the U.S. compound in Benghazi, killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and set the building ablaze. Using mortars, they launched a collateral attack on a safe house, killing two more Americans, as other U.S. agents fled to the airport.

On Sept. 14, White House press secretary Jay Carney said the attack came out of a spontaneous protest caused by an anti-Muslim video on YouTube.

On Sept. 16, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice told the entire nation the attack had not been premeditated or preplanned but emanated from a spontaneous protest of the nasty video.

On Sept. 25, Obama at the United Nations mentioned the video six times.

But when they were pushing this tale, what did the White House actually know?

For we have now learned that the assault was observed in near real time by the State Department's Charlene Lamb, who was in contact with the security section at the Benghazi compound.

The next day, Sept. 12, Fox News and Eli Lake of The Daily Beast reported that U.S. intelligence had concluded it was terrorism. Within 24 hours of the attack, U.S. intelligence had identified some of the terrorists as members of an al-Qaida affiliate.

Thus either administration higher-ups were ignorant for more than a week of what their own agents knew, and are thus manifestly incompetent, or they colluded in a cover-up and orchestrated deception.

As the facts are revealed, the weight of evidence tilts toward the latter conclusion.

Why? Because we now know there never was any protest at the Benghazi compound ? not against an anti-Muslim video or anything else.

And if there was no protest, who sent Carney out to blame the attack on the protest? And if there was no protest, who programmed Rice and put her on five separate Sunday talk shows to attribute the massacre to a protest that never happened?

If real-time intelligence and U.S. agents at the scene knew it was premeditated, preplanned terrorism by Sept. 12, who told Rice to deny specifically on Sept. 16 that the attack was premeditated or preplanned?

Indeed, why was Rice sent out at all? She is not in the chain of command. Why she accepted the assignment is obvious. She wants to be Hillary Clinton's successor as secretary of state. But who put her up to this? Who pushed her out front to mislead us?

The CIA's David Petraeus or Director of National Intelligence James Clapper should have been sent out to say what we knew, five days after the massacre. As Chris Stevens reported to the secretary of state and President Obama, why was Hillary or National Security Adviser Tom Donilon not sent out to explain what had happened to Stevens and the others?

Looking back, Carney and Rice appear to have been used by their superiors.

Carney would never have gone out to speculate on his own about what happened in Benghazi. His line on Sept. 14 had to have been fed to him by the White House chief of staff, Donilon, Obama or all of them.

As for Rice, someone contacted those five TV networks to put her on. And the party line she delivered ? the opposite of the truth ? had to have been fed to her, almost word for word ? by Donilon or the chief of staff.

Could Donilon or Hillary have been in the dark about what Rice was going to say? Could they have still been in the dark about what had happened five days before in Benghazi, when Hillary's own deputy Charlene Lamb had followed the terrorist attack in near real time?

Hillary and the entire Obama national security team are in that famous photo with Obama watching Seal Team Six in Abbottabad when Osama bin Laden was taken down.

Was the National Security Council alerted by Lamb when she was observing the attack in near real time? Did the NSC also observe?

Was the president told by the NSC that we were getting real-time intel and video from Benghazi, and would he like to see?

There is an even more fundamental question:

Why did the White House persist with the phony story of a protest against a video being the cause of Ambassador Stevens' death, when they had to know there was no protest?

The most plausible explanation is that the truth ? we were being hit with the worst terror attack since 9/11 in a city we saved ? would have exposed Obama's boasting about his Libya triumph and al-Qaida being "on the run" and "on the path to defeat" as absurd propaganda.

Al-Qaida is now in Libya, Mali, Yemen, Syria, Iraq and Pakistan.

And the epidemic of anti-American riots across the Muslim world, with Arab Spring elections bringing to power Islamist regimes, testify to the real truth. After four years of Obama, it is America that is on the run in the Middle East.

But we can't let folks find that out until after Nov. 6.

Hence the Benghazi cover-up.

The Basics Of Planning A Beach Marriage : Relationships

You are here: Home / Wedding / The Basics Of Planning A Beach Marriage

Many girls hang on to the idiosyncratic fantasy of marrying on a white-sand beach, the salty sea breeze tousling their light, flowing gowns and the sand warming their toes as they walk barefooted down the makeshift aisle. It does not have to remain a fantasy, though, even when you're on a tight budget.

A beach wedding is simply not a dream that ladies can only hope to become reality. It's also a cheap means to tie the knot. However , it can be quite something to plan. If you are not exposed to plenty of weddings in your life, expect a beach wedding to be a lot of work.

There's no need to panic, though. Gather your notebook and a convenient pen and keep a checklist of the things you want to watch out for.

Destinations

As a future bride living in Perth or close by areas, you don't need to look farther away from home for a range of beach venues that line the southwestern coast. Sorrento Beach in Foreshore Park is the ideal place for an elegant beach wedding, with adequate car park for a limo and covered strips in case the weather unexpectedly turns sour. Trigg Island Beach is also a perfect choice as the rocks can create a shelter against biting winds. Another locale is Cottosloe Beach, which is quiet, small and ideal for an intimate marriage with just friends and family.

Climatic Conditions

It cannot be stressed enough that you check the weather conditions around your scheduled wedding day. You definitely don?t want to soak your visitors in rain or seawater as you neglected to contact the weatherman. Also, avoid midday beach weddings, as the noontime sun from 10 to 3 PM may cause plenty of harm, from second degree burns to irate marriage guests. A backdrop of the sunrise or sunset adds magic to an already wonderful beach ceremony, so plan your marriage early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Invites

Beach ceremonies are not like normal weddings, where guests can simply throw on what they wore at the last wedding they attended and troop to the church. Beach weddings need preparation from you and also your guests. Attire, for one thing, is something they have to think about. For obvious reasons, a stiff, black jacket or a shiny cocktail dress is not suitable for a beach marriage. You also need to confirm your guests know the way to find your venue, unless you do not want to have guests. Send out your invites early so your visitors can stand by. Better create save-the-date cards and mail them to your friends and family.

Pests

Beach weddings are ideal for the nature-loving couple. Unfortunately, your guests must stand up to the one or two occasional pests crashing in on your wedding party. Birds that do not swoop too low and crabs that scurry across the sandy floor are sometimes not an issue, but bugs and mosquitoes can show up too. To ease this pesky problem, light one or two citronella candles and set them up in decorative candle holders to be arranged all over your venue. You can disburse little packets of bug repellent lotion at the entrance. It's a simple yet thoughtful gesture your guests will fully appreciate.

Clothes

Four-inch stilettos and the literal full nine yards are unacceptable at a beach wedding. The shore is not the best place for something extremely formal or glamorous, but it is ideal for weddings with a more laid-back and casual atmosphere. You can still don silks and linens but go for a shorter dress with a soft and flowing skirt, while the groom can also give up his suit in exchange for a satin shirt and matching drawstring pants. Go shoeless or wear sandals. Whatever you do, remember that heels have no place at the beach.

Ultimately, always have a Plan B. A beach marriage can sometimes be one of your most beautiful memories in later life, but it may also cause some serious heartache if you have to cancel the big day as a result of an unexpected downpour. Spotless organisation talents are a need for each beach bride. If your heart is set on getting married by the shore, grab your notebook and your most important buddy. It is time for some serious wedding planning.

Chinese shoppers power global luxe sales

[MILAN] Chinese shoppers both at home and abroad are pushing personal luxury sales to new heights.

A new study by Bain & Company released yesterday forecasts the global luxury goods market for apparel, accessories, jewellery, cosmetics and art will grow 10 per cent this year to 212 billion euros (S$336 billion), from 192 billion euros in 2011. That would be the third straight year of double-digit growth.

Bain expects spending for the holidays to increase by 7 per cent in 2012 over last year. But the real boost is from Chinese consumers, who this year became the top luxury buyers responsible for 25 per cent of global purchases. Europeans contributed 24 per cent to global sales, Americans 20 per cent and Japanese 14 per cent.

"Concerns about market weakness are somewhat overblown," said Claudia D'Arpizio, a Milan-based partner at Bain and lead author of the study. The luxury goods market will grow by 4 per cent to 6 per cent annually between 2013 and 2015, excluding currency swings, Bain said.

Fondazione Altagamma, Italy's luxury trade association, commissioned the study.- AP, Bloomberg

Major League Soccer and St. Jude Children?s Research Hospital? team up for same goal: Helping kids fight cancer

Goals for St. Jude ambassadors Rafa Marquez, Kenny Cooper, Logan Pause, Shea Salinas, Jason Hernandez, Mehdi Ballouchy and Dan Kennedy to help raise funds and support for St. Jude

Memphis, Tennessee (September 19, 2012) ? MLS W.O.R.K.S., Major League Soccer?s community outreach initiative, and St. Jude Children?s Research Hospital is celebrating Goals for St. Jude Week September 15 - 22. The week-long program asks fans to join forces with their favorite MLS teams to support the lifesaving work of the hospital. St. Jude is one of the world's premier centers for the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other deadly childhood diseases.

This year Rafa Marquez and Kenny Cooper (New York Red Bulls) join Logan Pause (Chicago Fire), Shea Salinas, Jason Hernandez and Mehdi Ballouchy (San Jose Earthquakes) and Dan Kennedy (Chivas USA) on the Goals for St. Jude ambassador roster. These talented players will work together to raise awareness and funds to help St. Jude continue its mission of finding cures and saving children.

?I think it is important for myself and others to support St. Jude because they are fighting for an incredible cause,? said Cooper. ?I feel lucky that I had the opportunity to witness first-hand the lifesaving work that St. Jude is doing.?

Throughout Goals for St. Jude Week and the month of September, PSAs about St. Jude will run in-stadium and on broadcasts featuring Marquez, Cooper, Pause, Salinas and Kennedy. Goals for St. Jude Week also coincides with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

?St. Jude helps its patients celebrate everyday moments?both big and small?that make life so special,? said Richard Shadyac Jr., CEO ALSAC/St. Jude Children?s Research Hospital. ?What?s more, because of the generosity of our donors and the support of great partners like Major League Soccer, no family ever pays St. Jude for anything.?

Prior to Goals for St. Jude Week, each ambassador traveled to Memphis to tour the hospital and met with patients and doctors. All of the players were able to bring smiles to the faces of the patients, but Ambassador Logan Pause felt the patients had a bigger impact on him than vice-versa.

?I think it is wonderful to see smiles on the faces of the patients,? said Fire midfielder Logan Pause. ?To have a chance to sit and talk to them and get to know them was an extremely memorable and humbling experience for me.?

Fans can join MLS and St. Jude by participating in Goals for St. Jude Week. For an inside look at exclusive videos and photos of Goals for St. Jude ambassadors or to make a donation online, visit stjude.org/goals.

About St. Jude Children?s Research Hospital
Since opening 50 years ago, St. Jude Children?s Research Hospital has changed the way the world treats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. No family ever pays St. Jude for the care their child receives and, for every child treated here, thousands more have been saved worldwide through St. Jude discoveries. The hospital has played a pivotal role in pushing U. S. pediatric cancer survival rates from 20 to 80 percent overall, and is the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children. It is also a leader in the research and treatment of blood disorders and infectious diseases in children. St. Jude was founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, who believed that no child should die in the dawn of life. Family Secrets | ShahidulNews

On the evening of 29 July 2012, Carina Roodenburg, a kindergarten teacher from Utrecht, the Netherlands, wrote this brief note describing what had transpired earlier in the day:

?Carina, come here,? a voice unknown two days ago, but sounds familiar already, is calling me. It is my uncle. I stand up. Finally. I?m already waiting for two hours and it surprises me that the tension didn?t drive me crazy yet. I am aware of every footstep I take. How many will it be? Fifteen? Twenty?

This is the moment I have [been] longing for. Maybe already thirty years. That many years ago they flew me out of this colorful country into the Netherlands. Between all those tall white people which some of them I could call family and a lot of them even friends, I kept thinking of her. My mind could not remember her smell, her skin, her voice. But my heart did. It started to hurt. More and more. The missing. The not knowing. Tears were piling up and there was only one way to go. Back! And that is where I am now. Still three footsteps to go. Then I will be there. Back to whom it all began. Where I began. One step. I look up. Our eyes met. Now I know. Forever. There she is. My mother.

Carina had been adopted in 1982 by a Dutch couple, Adriana and Pieter Roodenburg. Her life with her adoptive family has had all the usual intimacies of belonging. Recently, her ailing 95-year-old grandmother called Carina and her brother?two years younger and also adopted?and said that to her they were no different from her biological grandchildren. ?It was a vindication of the fact that my family, my life, is here in Holland,? says Carina. But, growing up, she was also aware of being different. ?It?s hard to put in words what being adopted does to a person,? she writes in an email to Open, ?You?re getting out of your natural system and culture. Then, they put you between people who don?t look like you at all. Everywhere you see White people. At school, I was always the only dark girl. Not to forget that in Holland, most people are tall so I was always the shortest. You see your friends looking like their parents and brothers or sisters. I could not refer to anything. It makes you feel very lonely and sometimes you think you are crazy because you feel so different.?

As a child, India was entirely unfamiliar to her. Later, India was just a unit of information, a place of her birth, and it wasn?t until she was past her teens that she developed a strong urge to contact her biological mother. ?When I used to see daughters shopping with their mothers, I would imagine doing the same,? she says on Skype, ?The image of my mother was blurry in my mind.? She would think of her mother on her birthdays. ?That?s my day. I would wonder if my mother misses me [on my birthday].? Some of Carina?s thoughts were far from pleasant. ?I have had a lot of psychiatric expenses because of all the problems I suffer of being abandoned (identity crisis, lack of confidence, bonding problems etc),? she writes.

Three years ago, Carina began searching for her biological mother. All she knew was that she had been adopted from Pune in 1982 after her unwed mother surrendered her as a one-month-old to an orphanage.

?I had to see where I came from, hear what the story was, and see if I looked like them,? writes Carina, ?But it was easier said than done. My institution, where I was born, didn?t want to give me my files. So there you?re standing. In the country where you were born, where everybody looks like you, but you can?t talk with them because you don?t speak their language and they don?t want to help you. You feel empty handed and lost. So then I decided to get the help of a social worker who lives in Pune. I couldn?t do this alone. She speaks the language and knows the culture. So she [helped me], and now after 31 years I am going to meet the woman who gave birth to me.?

The reunion described in her note took place on 29 July. Her mother belongs to a small village on the Pune-Satara road. Seeing each other, they both froze. Emotions found vent only later. ?This is the woman I have been thinking of all my life,? was Carina?s first reaction, while her mother kept mumbling ?It wasn?t my fault? in Marathi. Her mother, it turned out, was a widow with two other daughters, and was suffering throat cancer. Carina offered to pay for the treatment, but her mother?s family declined.

Back in the Netherlands now, Carina is trying hard to deal with her feelings. ?I will always feel a major part of me is missing: a family in India,? she says, ?I cannot do anything about it. I will have to live with it.? For her, abandonment as a child is ?one of the most traumatic experiences a person can face?. And she is clear about one thing: ?Every child/person does have the right to know who his/her parents are.?

Carina?s is not an isolated case. As we spoke to Indian borns who were adopted in the 70s and 80s by White couples abroad, we found a pattern to their stories: they grew up in an environment where their physical attributes were a constant reminder of their difference.

Some did well, but many of them had difficult?even traumatic?childhoods. They were haunted by one big question: why had they been given up? Some even wondered if they had been kidnapped.

The question gnawed away at them, drawing many to India for what would be the most arduous quest of their lives?the mothers who bore them. In some cases, it meant crossing hurdle after hurdle put up by adoption agencies, orphanages, powerful families and governments. Information, they found, was a nightmare to obtain. If they got hold of documents, they found their birth records fudged. They had to take recourse to the courts to force agencies to reveal information.

Most of those who succeeded found their biological parents leading lives of poverty.

Others still struggle. No one gave up.

German national Arun Dohle met his biological mother after a 17-year search, involving prolonged litigation, in 2010. It was a reunion both emotional and composed. No words were exchanged; Dohle couldn?t speak Marathi. He had been adopted as a two-month-old by a German couple, Michael and Gertrude Dohle, in 1973. His single mother had given him up for adoption to Pune?s Kusumbai Motichand Mahila Seva Gram.

Dohle took his fight all the way to the Supreme Court, just to force authorities to reveal information that would lead him to his biological mother. According to him, his adoptive parents were friends of NCP leader Sharad Pawar?s brother Pratap, the one who?d facilitated the adoption. Had it not been for ?the power of the family?, he says, he?d have found his biological mother sooner. On being contacted by Open for his response, Pratap Pawar refused to speak.

Having won his battle, Dohle now wants to focus on the rights of all adopted children. His battle has left him with deep disdain for the procedure of foreign adoptions in India. He terms the paperwork ?complete crap? and ?nothing but a bunch of lies?. ?I am not against adoption,? he clarifies, ?I am against the trade in children in the name of adoption.?

To expose one of the world?s ugliest forms of ?commerce? and campaign for the proper implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, Dohle has started an NGO called Against Child Trafficking (ACT) in alliance with Roelie Post, a bureaucrat of the European Commission. ACT has declared an open war against aggressive foreign adoption agencies that are in the alleged business of ?legalised child trafficking?. So far, Dohle and Post have investigated over a hundred adoption cases and exposed horrors like the abduction of children, irregularities like false documentation, and cash trails that wind their way not just from India but also countries like Malawi, Ethiopia, China and Peru to places with ?demand? for children.

Dohle also helps Indian-born adopted adults trace their genetic forebears with the help of Anjali Pawar, who heads a Pune-based child rights NGO called Sakhee. She is the ?social worker? who came to Carina?s aid. For Dohle, she carried out an extensive investigation using whatever little details were available. She has lost count of the reunions she has facilitated over the six years she has been working as a child rights activist.

What is clear is that Pawar, Dohle and Post are a bother to the establishment. In its recently issued guidelines, India?s Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA), a nodal government body that oversees in-country and inter-country adoptions of Indian children, has banned third-party searches. Pawar and Dohle, already starved of funds for their work, expect the going to get tougher still. But Pawar is defiant. ?They can?t stop me,? she says, ?It?s my constitutional duty to expose and fight against wrongly carried out inter-country adoptions.?

?Adoption has little to do with child protection,? says Dohle in a Skype conversation from his home in Aachen, Germany, ?Child protection is the responsibility of the State. A real help would be to support poor parents at the local level. It will prevent the forced relinquishment of children, as poverty is the single largest cause of parents deserting children.? Inter-country adoption, to his mind, ought to be ?the last resort for children in need?.

Somalia and the US are the world?s only two countries that have not notified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which makes it incumbent upon the State to take care of a child ?deprived of his or her family environment?, ?ensure alternative care for such a child?, and ensure that ?due regard [is] paid to the desirability of continuity in a child?s upbringing and to the child?s ethnic, religious, cultural and linguistic background?.

The case of Jennifer Haynes illustrates the consequences of America?s refusal to accept those terms. She was eight years old when she was adopted by Edward and Melissa Hancox, a US couple, in November 1989. She had only stayed with them a few months when they told her they would not be able to take care of her anymore. Jennifer was adopted by another family, but she did not get to stay long with them either. Her childhood was an unbroken chain of being shunted from one house to another. In all, she moved around 50 homes, mostly in Michigan. The reason was shockingly simple. The US provides financial aid to some families based on the number of children in the household, and she was reduced to a mailbox for the cheques, an income supplement for her foster families.

It got worse. As a child, Jennifer was often molested?by inmates of orphanages where she spent time awaiting adoption, a few foster brothers, and even one foster father. ?I didn?t think it was wrong.? It was only after she started attending school, at the age of ten, that she realised what was happening. ?There was no love,? she says, ?I craved the love and affection of a family.?

Jennifer?s adulthood has been no less traumatic. In 2002, at the age of 21, she married an African-American businessman called Justin and had a couple of children, a girl Kadafi in 2004 and a boy Kanassa a year later. But the couple ran into trouble with the law. Justin was imprisoned in 2002 for illegal possession of drugs; out on probation, he found himself back in the slammer on the same charges in 2004. Around this time, Jennifer was booked for a drug felony too, and an immigration inquiry was initiated against her. All she had were a few adoption documents, as her citizenship formalities had been left incomplete by her adoptive families. Technically, she was not a US citizen and thus a fit case for deportation. She fought a long legal battle to stay in the US, but lost. On 2 July 2008, she was asked to pack up. She took a flight to Mumbai without money, without documents, and without even a chance to speak to her children.

After 20 years in America, first as an adopted child and then a wife and mother of two, Jennifer was summarily expelled to the country of her birth. She had nowhere to go in Mumbai, and sought refuge initially at the YWCA in Colaba. Without documents, she couldn?t find a job, and had to seek judicial help to access her Baptism papers.

In 2010, these papers led her to her biological family in Ambarnath, a distant suburb of Mumbai. Her mother was long dead. Her father died two months after she met him. Her brother lives with his wife and son in abject poverty. She gifted him a mobile phone to stay in touch, but he lost it. In retrospect, she doesn?t regret being put up for adoption. It was an emotional reunion, but she still doesn?t feel at home. ?I don?t belong here,? she says.

Jennifer?s sole goal in life is to get back to her son and daughter, who live in Chicago with their paternal grandparents. A call centre job sustains both her life and legal battle to reunite with her children. She has sued Americans for International Aid and Adoption (AIAA), the agency that processed her adoption?apart from that of 5,088 other children born in Asia, South America and East Europe. She holds it responsible for her plight.

In the agency?s defence, Nancy Fox, executive director, AIAA, wrote to CARA on 23 March 2009 discussing Jennifer?s case: ?The first [adoptive] family wanted to disrupt the adoption because of Jennifer?s difficult behavior [at] home and in school.? Fox claims that the agency took custody of her and found her a new home. ?We were totally unaware of her deportation,? wrote Fox, ?It has been 17 years since the finalization of her second adoption in 1992 and Jennifer has never contacted us previously.? In an affidavit filed at the Bombay High Court dated 11 March 2010, Fox denies what she calls ?unsubstantiated statements, allegations and contentions? made by Jennifer, and asks for her petition?s dismissal saying it was unfortunate that neither her foster families nor she on turning 18 applied for US citizenship. The High Court dismissed the case and it is now pending at the Supreme Court.

It seems unclear if Jennifer will be able to bear another emotional upheaval. ?My parents abandoned me,? she says, ?I am forced to abandon my children.? It has been six years since she last saw them. She has tried everything within her means, even written to US President Barack Obama: ?Can you please help me? ? I am an American without a country; a lost child who was sent away from my home, my family and my children.? No help came her way. ?If I am a fit case for deportation from America to India,? she says, ?so is Obama to Africa.?

Hers is not the only such tragedy. Kairi Abha Shepherd, 30, another AIAA adoption, is also on the verge of being deported to India. She was adopted in 1982 by a single woman, a US citizen from Utah, when she was three months old, one of a dozen children her foster mother adopted from all over the world. Kairi?s mother died before she could get citizenship, and she was booked as an adult for forging cheques to support an alleged drug habit. She served her sentence, but is now at risk of being thrown out of the US. Kairi?s life, says her lawyer Alan Smith, ?just fell between the cracks?.

Neil Ghosh lives in New York City and works in finance.? He was adopted at birth by a Bengali American couple in 1983. ?They have been and continue to be the only parents I know,? he writes in an email, ?They?ve given me a privileged life that has afforded me many luxuries, such as an Ivy League education and world travel?a life that a poor child in Kolkata might only see in his dreams.? He holds a Bachelor?s degree in South Asian history from University of Pennsylvania and a Master?s degree in Bengali Modern painting from Columbia University.

Neil was raised in the suburbs of Los Angeles, and grew up spending a month every summer with his maternal grandparents in Kolkata. ?But I made a different kind of journey in 2006?one to discover my roots. As a child, I struggled to understand why my birth parents had given me up. By the time I was a teenager, I understood that life was more nuanced.?

His genes, he realised, would cast a lifelong shadow on him. ?Still, adoption has left me with more practical questions, such as whether I?m predisposed to heart disease or diabetes. And, with the availability of relatively affordable genetic mapping, I am no longer frustrated that I couldn?t learn more about my biological parents? health.? He got some information on his biological family from the Kolkata obstetrician?a friend of his mother?who delivered him. It was all he needed to know. ?I learned that my birth mother was widowed during the pregnancy and had other children to feed. While I couldn?t learn about my family?s medical history, I learned that her love and influence is with me every day. I occasionally wonder whether my birth mother is still alive or where my older biological siblings might be. While I probably will never meet her, I feel blessed to have been born to a woman who put her children?s well-being above her own emotions and desires.?

For some, there has been no resolution. The search, in many cases, goes on. Take the case of Rebecka Saudamini Arnes, a 34-year-old psychiatric nurse from Hoor, Sweden. Adopted by a Swedish couple 33 years ago, she has been in search of her biological parents for the past five years.

She was just two days old when she was given away to Shraddhanand Mahilasharam by her mother. She has filed a joint petition with her adoptive mother Eva Lindgren, 60, against this women?s home for denying her what she sees as her ?legitimate and constitutional right to know about my origin and roots in India?.

Rebecka?s adoption was facilitated by Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, and later Tushar Gandhi, the great man?s great grandson, through a Mumbai-based trust called the Mahatma Gandhi Foundation.

Last month, the Bombay High Court rejected her petition, asking her to start afresh at the lower court level. But the legal rigmarole and travel back and forth from Sweden are proving costly. She does not want to talk about her case because it is sub judice. Her court documents, a culmination of years of digging done with Anjali Pawar?s help, offers a few crucial leads. Her birth certificate, she alleges in her petition, has been manipulated to hide her mother?s identity. The X-ray image shows a smudged mother?s name: ?Zarina?. She was delivered by Dr KT Shah of Parle hospital, Mumbai.

Rebecka?s boyfriend, Johan Berggren, who was helping her in the search, had contacted Dr Shah?who directed him to Tushar Gandhi. ?He has all the relevant details and is in a better position to guide you,? Dr Shah wrote in a mail to Berggren on 14 July 2009. Meanwhile, Rebecka got in touch with Rucha Samant, daughter of the nurse Pushpa who took care of her for three months before her adoption. It was Pushpa who named her Saudamini, claims Samant in an e-mail: ?You were the most beautiful child. She cried when you left.? But the identity of her mother could not be determined.

Rebecka?s only hope was now the Gandhi family. So she kept writing to them. To her dismay, they wouldn?t part with much information. Arun Gandhi wrote back on 13 July 2009: ?The father and mother have a right to privacy. So, no one, even if they know it, will give the information unless the mother or father waives the right.? He adds, ?You must remember: you are assuming that your mother lives in poverty and destitution. That is not so. Anyone who could go to a private nursing home for delivery has to be upper middle class.?

The Gandhis tried to persuade her to give up her quest. ?You seem to think that I have nothing else to do except help you. First of all, you forget that I stopped doing adoption work almost 25 years ago; second, you were one of a hundred odd babies we rescued and gave in adoption; third, we did not keep records of all of you because we don?t need them; fourth, Sunanda was handing all this and she died.? Arun Gandhi sent this email with an address tag ?160, Wintergreen Way, Rochester, NY, 14618?.

Rebecka?s persistence was too much for the Gandhis? patience, as the increasingly dismissive tone of their mails makes clear. Wrote Tushar Gandhi: ?I told you that if you trouble Dr Shah of Parle hospital again? I am going to write to the Indian embassy in Stockholm requesting never to give you a visa to come to India, and believe me they will listen to me.? And: ?If anybody from Sweden ever visits Parle Hospital and questions the doctor there, I will have them arrested for the charges of harassment and intimidation.?

Why would a 34-year-old adopted girl worry the Gandhis so much?

Tushar Gandhi?s correspondence does not end here. In another email the next day, 29 January 2010, he wrote: ?[Your biological mother] never imagined that 30 years later the curse she had thought she was rid of was going to come back to dishonour her. But then you are her curse but not her offspring? You have been a curse on her fate since the day you took root in her womb and like a terminal cancer you will be satisfied only when you kill her.?

If Tushar Gandhi regrets his words, he has a strange way of expressing it. ?[The emails] may have been insensitive on my part but I was at my wits? end. She would just not listen to logic. I had tried to explain to her rationally but she remained persistent. How can one produce a woman after 30 years?? he told a newspaper.

Rebecka Saudamini Arnes has not given up her search. It is her right to know who she was born to, not Tushar Gandhi?s to deny her that information, however great his biological forefather?s soul may be.
