Mali: Chadian Troops and Islamists Killed in Bloody Mountain Battle

At least 13 Chadian troops and 65 Islamist rebels have been killed in a fierce battle in the remote mountain region of Ifoghas in Northern Mali, Chad's army has said.

Many Islamic insurgents were thought to have sought shelter in the mountains soon after the French-led forces had driven them away from the landlocked West African nation.

The recent death toll is the heaviest for the French and African troops since the launch of the onslaught six weeks ago.

"The provisional toll is ... on the enemy's side, five vehicles destroyed and 65 terrorists killed. We deplore the deaths of 13 of our valiant soldiers," said the military's statement which was read on state radio.

Weeks after the French intervention, African troops have been continually deployed in the country to insulate the regions from the al-Qaida-linked militants.

As part of the operations, Chad has pledged 2,000 troops for the UN-backed African operation. Nearly 1,800 Chadian soldiers have already been deployed to secure the strategic town of Kidal.

The Ifoghas mountains, a desert area in the Kidal region, provide a perfect hideout for the insurgents to launch guerrilla attacks on the Malian and French forces.

Meanwhile, clashes between the Islamists and French-led forces continued in other towns, including Gao.

A deadly car bomb which exploded in the town of Khalil killed five people. The Islamists planted the bomb targeting the secular Tuareg movement's members who have close links with French forces.

"It's simply the continuation of attacks by MUJWA, which will probably want to try more attacks in the coming days. It was sadly predictable and the next attacks will fail just like they did yesterday," French army chief Admiral Edouard Guillard told Reuters, about the Khalil attack.

France dramatically intervened in its former colony in January to stop Islamists from capturing southern parts of the country which include the capital Bamako.

France is expected to withdraw its troops in the coming weeks once the Africans take over.

Windows 7, 8 and RT Updates Due on Tuesday

Breaking with the regular Patch Tuesday routine of the second Tuesday of the month, Microsoft has announced the upcoming release of a new platform update for Windows 7, 8 and Windows RT.

The same support page shows that there will also be a software update for Windows 8, Windows RT, and Windows Server 2012 on that day, along with an update rollup for Windows Server 2012 Essentials. At the moment, the only information on what's included in those updates is that they are supposed to "resolve issues in Windows".

Marian Wright Edelman: What Killed President Kennedy and Trayvon Martin?

February 26 will mark one year since 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was killed by a gun wielded by self-appointed neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman after he saw Trayvon walking home from a 7-Eleven with a bag of Skittles and bottle of Arizona iced tea.

Black children, youths, and families know first-hand that the killing of Black children by gun violence is not new but a relentlessly unreported and under-reported plague that has been disproportionately snuffing out Black child lives for a very long time. Fifteen percent of children and teens are Black but 45 percent of all children and youths killed by guns in 2010 were Black. Black boys 15 to 19 years old were 28 times more likely than White boys the same age to be killed in a gun homicide.

Shortly after President Kennedy?s assassination, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote that it was time for our nation to do some soul-searching, and while the question ?Who killed President Kennedy?? was important, answering the question ?What killed President Kennedy?? was even more critical. Dr. King believed the answer was that ?our late president was assassinated by a morally inclement climate?: ?It is a climate filled with heavy torrents of false accusation, jostling winds of hatred, and raging storms of violence. It is a climate where men cannot disagree without being disagreeable, and where they express dissent through violence and murder. It is the same climate that murdered Medgar Evers in Mississippi and six innocent Negro children in Birmingham, Alabama.? Dr. King further noted that the undercurrents of hatred and violence that made up this morally inclement climate were fueled by our cultural embrace of guns: ?By our readiness to allow arms to be purchased at will and fired at whim, by allowing our movie and television screens to teach our children that the hero is one who masters the art of shooting and the technique of killing, by allowing all these developments, we have created an atmosphere in which violence and hatred have become popular pastimes.?

The same winds of hatred, storms of violence, and easy access to and glorification of guns that Dr. King believed killed President Kennedy would soon also kill Dr. King. Fifty years after Dr. King described our morally inclement climate, the outward signs of racial intolerance and hatred have undoubtedly diminished but there are still far too many reminders of the dangers lurking everywhere that devastate us all ? like Trayvon?s senseless death for walking home while Black. Between 1963, when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, and 2010, nearly 60,000 Black children and teens were killed by guns, over 1,200 every year for 48 years. This is 17 times the number of reported lynchings of Black Americans of all ages since 1882 but we have not had an equivalent Black community anti-lynching movement to save our children from gun violence.

While there are troubling undertones of racial suspicion and fear in Trayvon Martin?s killing which must be addressed as justice is sought, the fact is that most Black young people murdered by guns are killed by Black shooters ? just as most White children and teens murdered by guns are killed by White shooters. Sadly the tragedies of Tucson, Aurora, Newtown and elsewhere made clear that none of us are safe anywhere or immune to the pervasive threat of gun violence.

We are all in the same boat and must act together to stop the plague of violence. Gun safety laws that only apply in one city or state can?t fully stop our national epidemic of gun proliferation and violence any better than we can stop a flu epidemic by vaccinating one family. We must struggle together to stop gun violence and to change the morally inclement climate that Dr. King warned about if we are going to protect all of our nation?s children everywhere.

Organizing For Action Ad Buy Targets GOP Lawmakers On Background Checks

Organizing for Action, the pro-Obama advocacy group formed last month out of the president's reelection campaign, is launching an online campaign urging Republican lawmakers to support universal background checks for gun purchases.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the ads will target 16 Republican lawmakers who have not publicly committed to stricter background checks, including Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), and Rep. Buck McKeon (R-Calif.) in ads on local news outlets' websites starting Friday. The LA Times reports that the group spent close six figures on the ad buy, which is the issue-based nonprofit group's first.

The ad launch coincides with the group's national "Day of Action," which encompasses 100 events in 80 congressional districts. According to the LA Times, Friday's events are aimed at building support for tougher background check standards, but future "action" days will focus on other aspects of the president's gun policy proposals.

"These events range from Letter to the editor writing parties, or rallies and press events, to candle light vigils and petitions for members of Congress," OFA spokeswoman Katie Hogan told The Hill. "These events were tailored by our supporters on what they thought was the best event for their community."

A bipartisan group of senators is currently negotiating background check legislation, which would expand the process for vetting gun buyers.

"It's coming along pretty well," Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said last week of the proposal. "We're hopeful."

Recent polls have shown overwhelming public support for expanding the background check system. A Quinnipiac poll released earlier this month found that 92 percent of Americans, including 91 percent of gun-owning households, support universal checks.

Drawbridge?s $14M Round Valued The Cross-Device Ad Targeting Startup At $99M

drawbridge logoDrawbridge, a Kleiner Perkins- and Sequoia-backed startup aiming to improve mobile and cross-device ad targeting, has raised $14 million in Series B funding. AdAge actually broke the news earlier this week, but a source with knowledge of the deal told me that the story got one crucial detail wrong ? the new funding actually valued Drawbridge at $99 million, more than double the $45 million that AdAge reported. I trust my source more than I trust AdAge's unidentified "executive familiar with the deal," but then I would, wouldn't I? For those of you following along at home, this might seem like a classic he-said she-said situation. I will point out, however, that $45 million seems like a pretty low valuation for a company that has raised a total of $20.5 million in funding. Plus, raising $14 million at that valuation would mean giving away a lot of the company. Since Drawbridge is a young startup that only raised its Series A and launched its first products last year, it probably isn't so cash-strapped that it needs to take money on such unfavorable terms.

It's the week to watch waxing gibbous moon

?

Starry Night Software

Some sights to look for on the gibbous moon, which dominates the evening sky this week.

By Geoff Gaherty
Space.com

Full moons tend to get most of the stargazing attention, but there's plenty to see now on Earth's nearest neighbor in its "waxing gibbous" phase.

The sun's shifting light will throw different parts of?the moon?into relief over the next few days, yielding interesting views of lunar craters and other landforms.?

Here's a brief guide of what to look for, after a bit of background on moon phases.

A moon phase primer
In its monthly trip around the Earth, the moon?passes four very distinct landmarks or phases: new moon, first quarter, full moon and third (or last quarter), before returning to new moon again. These mark 0 degrees, 90 degrees, 180 degrees and 270 degrees, respectively, as measured from the position of the sun.?[The Moon's Phases and Cycle (Infographic)]

All four phases are exact instants in a particular month. This cycle, they fall on the following days: new moon, Feb. 10; first quarter, Feb. 17, full moon, Feb. 25; and last quarter, March 4.

In between these four instantaneous phases, the moon is said to be in four transitional phases, which each last slightly more than a week. "Waxing crescent" comes after new moon, "waxing gibbous" follows first quarter, "waning gibbous" comes after full moon and waning crescent follows last quarter.

A "waxing" moon is getting larger while a "waning" moon is shrinking. Most people are familiar with a "crescent" shape, but the word "gibbous" is not normally in most people's vocabulary. It is from a Middle English word for "hump-backed" but can also refer to a pregnant belly.

Of course, the moon doesn't really change shape. The moon's phases are caused by the changing angle from which the sun illuminates it as the moon makes its way around the Earth.

What to look for
The current phase of the moon is waxing gibbous. The sun is shining at an angle from behind the Earth. We are past first quarter so more than half the moon is in sunlight, but the sun's light doesn't quite reach the far left of the moon. As always, the most interesting area to observe is close to the "terminator" ? the dividing line between day and night on the moon.

Depending on which night you look at the moon, different areas will be shown in high relief by the light of the rising sun.

On the northern half of the moon, look for the curving arc of the Mare Crisium, along with the smaller arc of the Sinus Iridum. These features were named in the 17th century, before astronomers knew that the moon was a dry and airless world. The names translate from the Latin as the "Sea of Crises" and "Bay of Rainbows," respectively.

Just north of the Mare Crisiumis the distinctive oval crater Plato, whose smooth dark floor is broken only by a few tiny craterlets. This crater is 68 miles (109 kilometers) in diameter, and is a perfect example of a crater whose floor filled withlava shortly after impact. Since then, a handful of impacts have created small pits in the smooth floor, visible only in fairly large telescopes under perfectly steady viewing conditions, an excellent test for the optical quality of a telescope. [Telescopes for Beginners: A Buyer's Guide]

Toward the southwest limb of the moon, look for the large crater Gassendi, named for 17th century French astronomer Pierre Gassendi. Sixty miles (101 km) in diameter, Gassendi's floor is full of many interesting features: a slightly off-center mountain, several large craters, a system of rilles (shallow grooves) and a strange cluster of conjoined domes (gentle swellings).

Near the lunar south pole is one of the youngest craters on the moon, named for Tycho Brahe, the famous Danish observer of the 16th century, whose observations were used by Johannes Kepler to determine the laws that govern the motion of the planets.

Tycho is 63 miles (102 km) in diameter. Its young age is betrayed by the bright ground it exposed and then sent out in long circumlunar rays in all directions.

Another bright young crater is Aristarchus in the northwest quadrant. Aristarchus lived in the 3rd century BCE and had ideas way ahead of his time, notably that the Earth revolved around the sun rather than the other way around. Although fairly small, at 25 miles (40 km) in diameter, Aristarchus' brightness makes it an easy crater to spot.

The names we use today for craters on the moon were mainly applied by Giovanni Riccioli in the 17th century.

Riccioli used names from ancient Greece, Rome and medieval Europe near the center of the moon and placed the modern (for his day) astronomers around the limb of the moon. Nowadays, modern scientists, all deceased, are placed anywhere on the moon. The only craters named for living people are a handful that bear the monikers of Apollo astronauts.

Shia LaBeouf quits play, hints at Baldwin clash

Mario Anzuoni / REUTERS file

By Natalie Finn, E!Online

Shia LaBeouf has cast himself as the lead in a nail-biter of an off-Broadway drama. Somewhat mocking the "creative differences" explanation that was given as the reason for him leaving the upcoming Broadway revival of "Orphans"?less than a month before previews are set to begin, the actor took to Twitter today to post emails between him; the play's director, Daniel Sullivan; and erstwhile costars Alec Baldwin and Tom Sturridge that indicate something more dramatic occurred behind the scenes.?

"Alec, I'm sorry for my part of a dis-agreeable situation," LaBeouf wrote in an email to El Dorado Pictures with a subject line reading, "Apology." In the philosophical missive, the actor also called his dad "a s--t human" and wrote things like "a man owns up," "a man does not know everything" and "a man can tell you he was wrong."

Is Anne Hathaway reprising her Les Miserables role on Broadway?

"I'm too old for disagreeable situations," responded Sullivan. "you're one hell of a great actor. Alec is who he is. you are who you are. you two are incompatible. I should have known it."

"this one will haunt me," the Tony-winning director continued. "you tried to warn me. you said you were a different breed. I didn't get it." Signed, "dan."

Those two emails were attached to a tweet reading, "creative differences."

Shia LaBeouf, Kristen Stewart, Natalie Portman topped Forbes' 2012 list of most bankable stars

Baldwin's camp declined to comment to E! News, while reps for Sturridge and LaBeouf -- who would have been making his Broadway debut in "Orphans" -- have yet to respond to requests for comment.

LaBeouf followed up an hour later with an exchange between him and Baldwin, in which the 30 Rock star assured him, "I've been through this before. It's been awhile. And perhaps some of the particulars are different. But it comes down to the fact that what we all do now is critical. Perhaps especially for you."

"I don't have an unkind word to say about you. You have my word," Baldwin added, signing off as "AB."

Find out why Matthew Broderick stopped in the middle of his performance of Nice Work If You Can Get It last night

LaBeouf replied with, "same. be well. good luck on the play. you'll be great," attaching the exchange to a tweet quoting David Mamet (who is not affiliated with the revival of Orphans): "Acting has become a profession of the genteel class."

Several hours later, the Transformers star tweeted, "Depth of friendship does not depend on length of acquaintance. Tom = good dude - good actor."

Attached was an email from Sturridge, also from today, reading, "I don't really know what to write. I went in this afternoon and they were all there...producers, etc. I said my piece but they didn't really listen. I don't understand what has happened here. Maybe you have had a more enlightening conversation with someone by now.

See more big stars who've done Broadway (but rarely this dramatically)

"All I can say is that it truly was an honour to work with you even if it was only for a few days," the Brit continued. "I was stunned by the work you were doing, the performance you were giving. I think you lifted the play to a place higher than maybe it even deserved to be...Hope you're ok brother."

Talk about your dramatic twists. We cannot wait to see what happens after intermission!

Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team has high hopes

An experienced Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team will take to the field with high hopes this season.

Twenty letterwinners and 15 players who started a year ago return for a Bullet squad that is coming off an 11-7 campaign in which it reached the Centennial Conference playoffs and the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

In the preseason, Gettysburg earned three national rankings, checking in at No.12 by Lacrosse Magazine, No. 15 by Inside Lacrosse's "Face-off Yearbook," and No. 16 by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.

The Bullets are directed by 26th-year head coach Hank Janczyk, who has a career record of 368-115, will be aided by two new assistants in Chris Perzinski and Dan Sharbaugh in addition to student assistant Caldwell Rohrbach, an All-Centennial Conference performer at Gettysburg last season.

Offensively, the Bullets return their starting attack line from the end of last season in junior Martin Manilla, sophomore Robby Maddux and senior Evan Thomas.

Manilla landed second team All-Centennial Conference honors a year ago after leading the Bullets in goals (36) and points (41). Maddux piled up all of his 28 goals over the final 11 games last year. Thomas, a team captain, also returns after starting four games in 2012 and finishing with eight goals and five assists.

Other Bullets who could push for playing time on the attack include junior Henry Tesar and sophomore Adam Narwicz.

In the midfield, the Bullets

return another All-Centennial Conference performer in sophomore Bijan Firouzan, who captured honorable mention last year. Firouzan started the final 16 games of the year and finished as the team's third-leading scorer with 10 goals and 14 assists.

Two additional starters return to the midfield while freshmen could also contend for playing time.

Senior Ryan Fumai is back after finishing third on the team with 15 goals. Classmate and captain Bobby DeWees returns after posting nine goals. Freshmen Mike Distler, Tim Murphy and Jameson Smith will likely see immediate action.

Defensively, two of the team's starting defensive midfielders return in senior Ian Casella and sophomore Andrew Toner. Casella, a team captain, was named second-team All-Centennial Conference as a long pole last season after finishing second on the team in both ground balls (35) and caused turnovers (19). Toner contributed 18 ground balls and three assists as a short-stick middie.

Other Bullets who could see time in the defensive midfield are junior long stick Alec Mitchell and sophomores Nick Alibrandi and Jack Harvazinski.

Three defenseman who started at some point in 2012 also return in senior Matt Canter, senior Phil Thompson and sophomore Alex Lanza. Junior Charlie Whiteley could also see playing time on the back row.

Gettysburg is also equipped with a pair of highly-experienced goalies in senior J.T. McCook and junior Jon Maddalone, who split time between the pipes last season. McCook, who started every game in 2011, finished 5-3 with a 8.70 goals-against average over nine games and eight starts in 2012. Maddalone went 6-4 with a 7.93 GAA and .557 save percentage while playing 12 games and starting 10 times, including all three of the team's postseason contests.

The Bullets will also return two familiar names on face-offs in senior Nick Avedisian and junior Wes Lincoln. A regular at the X since his freshman season, Avedisian, a team captain, won 53.0 percent of his attempts (123-for-232) last year and led the team with 52 ground balls. In 2012, Lincoln finished at 60.7 percent (65-for-107) while picking up 28 ground balls.

Gettysburg kicks off its season on Saturday, when it visits Messiah College at 1 p.m.

Platteview discusses adding baseball, softball

The cry of ?Play Ball!? might soon be heard at Platteview High School.

Springfield Platteview Community Schools is considering adding two varsity sports ? spring baseball for boys and fall softball for girls ? perhaps as soon as the 2013-14 school year.

?We?re getting close to making a decision,? said Superintendent Brett Richards. ?It could be as soon as the March 11 (school board) meeting for us to make a recommendation to the board.?

To that end, the district is hosting a public forum Monday at 7 p.m. at the high school auditorium ?to get public input one more time,? Richards said.

A 14-member committee headed by Activities Director Steve Joekel, who is also Platteview?s assistant principal, has met five times since mid-October to discuss the pros and cons of adding the two sports.

Included in the committee?s discussions were the results of a survey of approximately 400 district sixth through 11th graders that asked, among other things, their overall sports participation interests.

?One of the big things to come out of the survey is we?d have more kids participating in sports, and that?s exciting for us,? Richards said.

Joekel said this is the second time in five years the district has looked at adding baseball.

?There?s been an interest in adding baseball for quite some time,? Joekel said.

He noted Springfield?s strong American Legion summer program. As for softball, Joekel said Platteview is the only Class B or Class C-1 program in the state to not offer the sport.

All other seven member schools of the Capitol Conference offer softball, and five of the seven offer baseball, including a cooperative team of Wahoo and Raymond Central.

In looking at the big picture, Joekel said the district?s primary interest is to serve the students and their extracurricular needs, whether that be athletics, music or drama.

?We have no interest in compromising or eliminating other opportunities for kids to add baseball and softball,? Joekel said.

?As an educator, the most important piece to this is to provide more opportunities for our students.?

Richards estimates start-up costs for each program to be between $7,000 to $9,000 to cover such costs as coaches? salaries, equipment, travel and facility upgrades and maintenance.

The bulk of the funding of the new baseball and softball programs would come from the high school?s activity account, which funds the sports programs, Richards said.

Strike, protests hit Egypt's Port Said for 3rd day

PORT SAID, Egypt (AP) ? Hundreds of protesters in the restive city of Port Said have pressured government employees to leave work early as they enforced the third day of a general strike.

Thousands also rallied in a main square in the city on Tuesday, chanting against Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi.

The protesters marched to the main court house, shouting for the judge to send employees home. Witnesses said protest organizers called government offices asking them to leave work before midday.

Port Said sits at the tip of the Suez Canal but shipping through the strategic waterway has not been disrupted.

The protesters are demanding justice for security officials they blame for killing some 50 people during demonstrations in the city last month. Workers in local factories joined families of those killed in the protests.

Drew Peterson's defense: Defense botched trial

Paul Beaty / AP file

Joel Brodsky, left, and Steven Greenberg, attorneys for Drew Peterson, conferred outside the Will County Courthouse in Joliet, Ill., in more cooperative times during Peterson's murder trial Sept. 6, 2012.

By M. Alex Johnson, staff writer, NBC News

Drew Peterson, the ex-cop convicted of killing his third wife and whose fourth wife mysteriously disappeared, was in an Illinois courtroom Tuesday hoping for a new trial, but the proceedings were overshadowed by a vicious spat among members of the legal team that lost his murder trial last year.

The hearing recessed late Tuesday afternoon and was to resume Wednesday morning.?If the judge rejects the request for a new trial, Peterson, 59, a retired Bolingbrook, Ill., police sergeant, could be sentenced immediately for the murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, who died in 2004.

Peterson ? who first became famous after his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, vanished in 2007 ? could face up to 60 years in prison for his conviction in September.

Peterson's current lawyers argue that their former colleague Joel Brodsky ? Peterson's lead trial counsel ? botched his defense, justifying a new trial. Before the hearing Tuesday in Will County, Brodsky vigorously disputed that contention.

"I fought for five years defending Drew Peterson, very skillfully so," Brodsky told reporters.

Brodsky in particular disputed Peterson lawyer Steve Greenberg's ?argument that it was his decision alone to call Stacy Peterson's divorce attorney during the trial. The attorney, Harry Smith, testified that Stacy Peterson told him that Drew Peterson killed Savio and that he warned his client that she had to tell someone.?

"Not only did they support (calling Smith, but) they realized it was the only move we could make, and I even have emails from Greenberg not only approving Smith being called, but actually suggesting a question or two that I ask him," Brodsky said.

The enmity between the lawyers is so deep that Brodsky withdrew Tuesday from representing Peterson in a in a wrongful death civil suit filed by Savio's sisters. After the retrial hearing, a second judge will hear that suit.

The lawyers' dispute threatened to overshadow the possibility that Peterson himself could be called to the stand, NBC 5 of Chicago reported. And even Greenberg acknowledged that it was a thin reed on which to base a decision to overturn Peterson's conviction.

"We're definitely facing an uphill battle today," Greenberg said.?

NBC Chicago: Drew Peterson returns to court to request new trial

"But I'm confident," he added. "I know the law is on our side. I know the facts are on our side. ... Some people say it's a cold day in you-know-what when things happen. Well, it's cold today, so maybe it will happen."

University chiefs demand end to tuition fees cap

Custom byline text:?

Andrew Denholm Education Correspondent

Institutions north of the Border can charge students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland up to ?9000 a year.

The limit was introduced to ensure a level playing field with universities in the rest of the UK, which can also charge fees of up to ?9000. It was also intended to act as a brake on undue profiteering.

Now a group representing the 12 governing bodies of universities in Scotland has made a controversial call for them to be allowed to set their own maximum fee.

The call was immediately rejected by both the UCU Scotland lecturing union and student body NUS Scotland.

Mary Senior, of UCU Scotland, the largest union representing academics and lecturers, said: "It is astonishing that the chairs of courts are calling for undergraduate fees to be unregulated and market driven for students from the rest of the UK.

"The custodians of our world- class universities only seem to be interested in turning a profit, not defending our educational values."

Robin Parker, president of NUS Scotland, added: "It's extremely disappointing to see that the Committee of Scottish Chairs view students primarily as sources of additional income with this advocacy for an unregulated free market in Scottish education.

"It also highlights how out of touch the people involved in university governance are with the students they are supposed to serve, and with the Scottish public. To remove the cap completely and let the market rip through our system would be incredibly damaging."

The university ruling courts made the statement in a submission to the Scottish Parliament's education committee. It is currently scrutinising the Post-16 (Scotland) Education Bill, which would enshrine the cap in the law.

The Committee of Scottish Chairs said: "All universities welcome students from throughout the UK and overseas because of the diversity they bring to their communities.

"In setting the level of fees, universities must take into account the cost of providing courses and the desire to attract students.

"It is inconceivable that any governing body should set its fees at such a level that students would be discouraged from applying.

"The chairs, therefore, believe that this section is unnecessary."

Those on the Committee of Scottish Chairs include: Professor Stuart Monro (Edinburgh University), David Ross (Glasgow), Professor Ewan Brown (St Andrews) and Richard Hunter (Strathclyde).

The Herald reported yesterday how at least four Scottish universities had lost money as a result of the introduction of fees for students from the rest of the UK.

Aberdeen, Abertay in Dundee, Queen Margaret in Edinburgh and West of Scotland all said they now had a lower income because the level of fees collected was less than the public money they used to receive for these students.

However, Michael Russell, the Education Secretary, said Scottish universities continued to be attractive to students from other countries, with recent figures showing an increase of more than 600 accepting a place at a university north of the Border.

"The UK Government's decision to treble fees in England left this Government with no choice but to allow Scottish universities to increase fees for students from the rest of the UK in line with that," he said.

"However, we have taken action to ensure Scottish-domiciled students do not have to pay tuition fees and we are providing an increased number of funded places for Scottish and EU students."

Chinese hackers are run by PLA, report finds

Chinese cyber-hackers targeting companies and governments around the world are working out of a Peoples Liberation Army base and are likely to be taking their orders from army officers, a report into cyber-hacking has found.

The report by Mandiant, a US computer security firm, provides the notoriously elusive ?smoking gun? linking China?s military to the onslaught of international cyber attacks.

The company tracked members of the most sophisticated Chinese hacking group, known as the Comment Crew or the Shanghai Group, to a 12 storey office block in Shanghai. The building, set in a run down suburb set amongst massage parlours,

Current stars celebrate Jordan at 50

HOUSTON (AP) ? Michael Jordan turned 50 on Sunday, giving this year's All-Stars a chance to reflect on his illustrious career and how much he still means to the sport.

In a weekend filled with the NBA's greatest players, Jordan was the topic no one could stop talking about. Though he hasn't played since the 2002-03 season, Jordan's influence still permeates the league and its players.

"Every kid that wanted to play basketball, that could play, that couldn't play, you tried to emulate Michael Jordan," Heat star Dwyane Wade said. "That's why there will never be another one of him. He the first of his kind. Everything he did was groundbreaking. He did it with so much flare and so much pizazz that even today people are still trying to be like Mike."

Jordan won six titles and five MVP awards during a career spent mostly with the Bulls that began in 1984.

Jordan was in Houston this weekend, and celebrated his birthday early with a private bash on Friday at the Museum of Fine Arts with guests including LeBron James and Kobe Bryant.

Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard is so impressed with Jordan that he said he's like a real version of Superman.

"Be Like Mike" was more than a marketing campaign. It was a dream for many of today's players.

"He's amazing," Howard said. "He's one of the reasons why we played basketball. He inspired us to do great things. I hear his voice sometimes on commercials, it makes you want to get out there and try to do something."

Jordan retired twice before finally leaving the game for good at age 39. Some people wondered this weekend if he could still play in the NBA, despite reaching the age where he qualifies for an AARP card.

Wade believes this day will be a time for Jordan to reflect on his storied career and appreciate his family and health.

"Kind of look back at all the things he did, so many years ago in the NBA that still lives on today," Wade said. "What he's been able to do to stay this relevant, in this role, the way he has, is phenomenal."

Though he isn't seen often, Jordan is never far from the game. He is close to a group of players through his Jordan Brand apparel and as the owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. He ignited one of the debates of the weekend when he told NBA TV he would chose Bryant over James based on the number of championships each has won.

"If you had to pick between the two, that would be a tough choice, but five beats one every time I look at it, and not that (James) won't get five, he may get more than that, but five is bigger than one," Jordan said in the interview, which airs Monday night.

Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks counts Jordan as one of the most influential in his decision to play basketball.

"He changed the game, transcended the game," Anthony said. "He changed the way people coached the game from a mental aspect. From a training aspect, how you approach that, he changed that. So for me as a kid to see that and see somebody go through that and succeed, that was motivation."

Jordan, who retired for the last time with more than 32,000 points, is perhaps known as much by the younger generation of stars for his namesake Nike shoe as for his basketball skills.

"The imprint he's had on the league, he's an immortal," Bryant said. "Everything that he's done from the business aspect to his professionalism to his work ethic to the global appeal of the game has been something that carries on for generations and generations."

Jordan didn't make himself available to the press during All-Star weekend. James said this week that he wasn't too concerned with the TV remarks.

"At the end of the day, rings don't always define someone's career," James said. "If that's the case, then I would sit up here and say that I would take (Bill) Russell over Jordan. I wouldn't. I wouldn't take Russell over Jordan, but Russell has 11 rings and Jordan has six. Or I'd take, I don't know, Robert Horry over Jordan. I wouldn't do that. But it's your own personal opinion."

"Patrick Ewing is one of the greatest of all time," he continued. "Reggie Miller is one of the greatest of all time. Sometimes, it's a situation that you're in, it's the team that you're in. It's about timing as well."

One of the most common sentiments echoed by players this week when talking about Jordan was disbelief that he was turning 50.

"Time actually flies," Bryant said. "Him turning 50, this will be my 17th year, my 15th All-Star Game. Where did the time go?"

Buehrle to leave family behind to care for dog

(AP) ? Mark Buehrle won't be experiencing the dog days of summer.

While the pitcher is headed to Toronto, his family will split the season between Broward County in Florida and their home in St. Louis. One of their four dogs, Slater, is a mix of bulldog and American Staffordshire Terrier ? which is of pit bull lineage. Pit bulls are banned in the province of Ontario.

"He's an awesome dog," Buehrle said Saturday. "That's what's a shame; just the way he looks is why we have to get separated."

Sent to Toronto as part of the Miami Marlins' payroll purge, Buehrle had a few options. He could have left Slater with friends or placed him in a kennel. The Buehrle family also could have moved to Buffalo or somewhere else on the U.S. side of the border, forcing the pitcher to commute 90 minutes each way to Toronto.

Buehrle's wife, Jamie, 5-year-old Braden and 3-year-old daughter Brooklyn will spend time with the 33-year-old left-hander during spring training, as will Slater and their three vizslas.

"It's something we're going to deal with," Buehrle said. "It's going to be tough at the beginning, not seeing your kids, but people deal with it and we'll make it work."

Buehrle concluded responsible pet owners should not delegate to others the task of caring for a dog. And he said he wouldn't break a law by taking a dog where it is prohibited.

"We've had people say, 'Oh, you can bring them up here. Knowing you have money, no one's going to take your dog because they know you're going to fight against it,'" Buehrle said. "But the thing is, Slater will have to sit in a cage until that court date gets there, and that could be two weeks, it could be three months. If people don't own dogs, they're not going to understand you're leaving your family and your kids behind over a dog."

Buehrle said his family will travel to Toronto for occasional visits.

"It's not like we're not going to see each other," he said. "But we just feel like with all the training and all the stuff that we've done with the dogs, it's better that they stay with my wife."

After going 161-119 during 12 seasons with the Chicago White Sox, Buehrle agreed in December 2011 to a $58 million, four-year contract with the Marlins. The team went on a spending spree as it prepared to move into a new ballpark, but a terrible season caused owner Jeffrey Loria to shed stars.

Buehrle was traded in November along with shortstop Jose Reyes, right-hander Josh Johnson, catcher John Buck and outfielder Emilio Bonifacio to the Blue Jays.

None of the Marlins' players had contractual provisions allowing them to block trades. Buehrle issued a statement in November, saying "I was lied to on multiple occasions" by the Marlins.

"I let it be known how I felt, and I wasn't happy," he said. "I felt like we took a leap of faith there, coming there without a no-trade clause, and we felt like we'd be there a long time."

Buehrle said Marlins President David Samson reached out to him.

"I had nothing to say. I told them I wasn't in much of a mood, and that they wouldn't like to hear what I had to say," Buehrle explained. "I didn't have much interest in talking to them, and I don't have any plans now to ever talk to them again."

Masked intruders raid Greek gold mining company

SKOURIES, Greece (AP) ? About 40 masked attackers raided the facilities of a prospective gold mine in northern Greece overnight Sunday, setting machinery and offices alight, authorities said.

A police officer said employees told them the intruders tied up two security guards and doused them with gasoline, threatening to set them on fire. One of the guards was kicked and sought hospital treatment for bruises and respiratory problems, while the remaining 10 guards employed by the company at the facility fled, the officer said on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak to the media.

There has long been opposition to the prospect of a gold mine and processing plant being built at Skouries in the Halkidiki peninsula, with some residents objecting to what they say will be the destruction of the environment and of pristine forest in the area, leading to the loss of tourism and other local activities such as farming, the rearing of livestock and fishing.

The mining company, Hellas Gold, is 95 percent owned by Canadian mining company Eldorado Gold Inc. The Greek government has been eager for the foreign investment as it struggles through a deep financial crisis. But the dispute has led to frequent protests in the area, with tear gas and firebombs used and residents trading accusations with the company about heavy-handed reactions and the use of violence.

"Hellas Gold SA regretfully announces an unprovoked attack at its installations in Skouries ... Considerable material damages were done without ? fortunately ? loss of life. This incidence is an escalation of the attacks against us and is not surprising...The company takes for granted that it is supported by the majority of the locals in Halkidiki ... since it took charge of the mines, in February 2012, it tripled the workforce from 400 to 1,200 permanent employees," the company said in a statement released later Sunday.

"We do not understand these attacks ... we call on the authorities to defend legality and support any investment effort in our country, which is of crucial importance for its economic recovery," the statement says. It adds that the company's measures to ensure environmental safety exceed Greek and EU standards.

The attackers left the area on foot and placed logs on a road to delay firefighters, the officer said. Police believe the attackers used several getaway vehicles stationed some distance from the mine site, the officer said.

Police said they have detained 27 people for questioning early Sunday morning but all were subsequently released.

In a later statement Sunday evening, police said they have detained a further four persons and are looking for four more. They say they have also found a full face mask, a surgical mask and bloodstains. Forensics experts are examining evidence at the site.

Mine's supporters say that 1,200 jobs have already been created in an area that is especially hard hit by long-term unemployment. About 5,000 people also applied for an additional 200 jobs at the mine, said Giorgos Arvanitis, general secretary of the local miners' union.

"Who are they who come here and burn everything and threaten our lives?" Angelos Deliyovas, a mine employee told reporters Sunday. "We care for our livelihood and our lives. We have families and kids. The state should tell us what they are going to do about this."

"Tying employees with ropes and threatening (to burn) them, this is fascism. We will not let this pass by," says Arvanitis.

The Skouries project is the latest in a complex of mining facilities in the area. Hellas Gold holds mining licenses for an area covering 317 square kilometers (122 square miles) with proven and probable reserves of lead, zinc, silver, gold and copper.

Many see the foreign investment as vital to helping Greece emerge from its economic morass, where a quarter of the workforce unemployed and the economy heading into a sixth year of recession.

"Without the company, the game is over (for the local economy)," Deliyovas said. "Those who try to shut this project, they will find us on the other side."

Opponents also argue that unlike many other countries, the Greek state gets no royalties from mine concessions other than taxes and jobs. Concessions granted in 2004 for Stratoni, one of the Halkidiki mines that is currently operating and is near Skouries, are valid until 2026 and can be renewed twice for 25 years each time, free of charge.

Opponents say the new mine, which will consist of an open pit, tunnels beneath, and processing plant, will destroy the forest and contaminate groundwater. The company rejects these claims, saying it will refill and replant the open pit once the ore has been extracted, and that all necessary care is being taken not to pollute the environment.

"We (the employees) live here; we are the first ones who want to protect the environment," Deliyovas said.

Eldorado Gold did not immediately respond to requests for comment or details about the raid.

Bomb kills 64 in Pakistan's Quetta

QUETTA, Pakistan (Reuters) - Sixty-four people including school children died on Saturday in a bomb attack carried out by extremists from Pakistan's Sunni Muslim majority, police said.

A spokesman for Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, a Sunni group, claimed responsibility for the bomb in Quetta, which caused casualties in the town's main bazaar, a school and a computer center. Police said most of the victims were Shi'ites.

Burned school bags and books were strewn around.

"The explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device fitted to a motorcycle," said Wazir Khan Nasir, deputy inspector general of police in Quetta.

"This is a continuation of terrorism against Shi'ites."

"I saw many bodies of women and children," said an eyewitness at a hospital. "At least a dozen people were burned to death by the blast."

Most Western intelligence agencies have regarded the Pakistani Taliban and al Qaeda as the gravest threat to nuclear-armed Pakistan, a strategic U.S. ally.

But Pakistani law enforcement officials say Lashkar-e-Jhangvi has become a formidable force.

TENSIONS

Last month the group said it carried out a bombing in Quetta that killed nearly 100 people, one of Pakistan's worst sectarian attacks. Thousands of Shi'ites protested in several cities after that attack.

Pakistani intelligence officials say extremist groups, led by Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, have escalated their bombings and shootings of Shi'ites to trigger violence that would pave the way for a Sunni theocracy in U.S.-allied Pakistan.

More than 400 Shi'ites were killed in Pakistan last year, many by hitmen or bombs, and the perpetrators are almost never caught. Some hardline Shi'ite groups have hit back by killing Sunni clerics.

The growing sectarian violence has hurt the credibility of the government, which has already faced criticism ahead of elections due in May for its inability to tackle corruption and economic stagnation.

The schism between Sunnis and Shi'ites developed after the Prophet Muhammad died in 632 when his followers could not agree on a successor.

Emotions over the issue are highly potent even today, pushing some countries, including Iraq five years ago, to the brink of civil war.

Pakistan is nowhere near that stage but officials worry that Sunni extremist groups have succeeded in dramatically ratcheting up tensions and provoking revenge attacks in their bid to destabilize the country.

LinkedIn overhauls its jobs service with a fresh design and better discovery features

Finding a job can be difficult. We?ve all been there: going onto sites like Craigslist, Monster.com, Yahoo, and LinkedIn. And while there are certainly open positions out there, finding the one that matches our dream job can be difficult.

To that end, LinkedIn has unveiled an updated LinkedIn Jobs service that it says will make searching much easier to use and more relevant to its members. It expects this update to be rolled out to its 200 million members around the world.

LinkedIn Jobs?has undergone a transformation. Perhaps what users will first notice is the aesthetic difference. But besides redesigning the service, LinkedIn has also added several new features, including being able to dive deeper into job searches using more advanced queries. Now, users can look for openings by country, zip code, industry, and function.

In a recent survey by Bullhorn, a Boston-based company that makes technology products for employers and recruiters, LinkedIn is quite popular in the world of job searching and recruitment. Out of the 1,848 staffing professionals polled, 98.2 percent said that they used social media for recruiting in 2012 and 97.3 percent said they used LinkedIn as their recruiting tool.

Those results are great from a recruiting perspective, but for the potential applicants, it?s being able to find the jobs that can be difficult. LinkedIn is definitely a service that people are turning to, based on a 2012 Jobvite study. With 75 percent of Americans either actively looking for or considering themselves open to new jobs, LinkedIn is gaining ground over the top social network in finding jobs. 41 percent of respondents said that they turn to the professional social network for help, that?s up from 32 percent in 2011.

Snap 2013 02 15 at 10.28.47 730x461 LinkedIn overhauls its jobs service with a fresh design and better discovery features

New features

Remember those emails that LinkedIn sends you with the subject line ?Jobs you may be interested in?? Well those are now front and center when you go to the jobs section, although while most are tailored towards your experience and resume, there may be one or two that are sponsored jobs.

Finding a job opening that you?re interested in is one thing, but the next step is to get your foot in the door. One of the most interesting things with LinkedIn is the ability to find out how you?re related to the recruiter and/or the company. With the new LinkedIn Jobs, the company has updated it so that those connections are better highlighted so you know who can help you land that job.

Saved searches have also been improved in that they?re now quicker to find.

For those with premium access, LinkedIn has added two new features besides the ones listed just now: an updated advanced search feature that allows you to find jobs that meet your salary requirements, and embedded tips to help improve your search.
