No. 3 LSU overcomes sloppiness, downs Towson 38-22

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) ? Zach Mettenberger and the LSU offense are still searching for consistency as the Tigers enter one of the toughest stretches on their schedule.

Mettenberger connected with Odell Beckham Jr. five times for 128 yards and two touchdowns, but No. 3 LSU was unable to eliminate nagging offensive sloppiness in a 38-22 victory over overmatched but feisty Towson on Saturday night.

Mettenberger's scoring strikes to Beckham went for 53 and 27 yards, and LSU's quarterback finished 15-of-26 for 238 yards passing. Still, Mettenberger was sacked four times, missed some open receivers and a fumble he gave up ? one of three LSU turnovers ? led to the first of two touchdown runs by Towson's Terrance West.

West's first TD run gave Towson, an FCS team, a stunning 9-7 lead in the second quarter before LSU responded with 24 straight points.

J.C. Copeland, LSU's powerful 272-pound fullback, scored his third touchdown of the season on a 1-yard plunge, but was hurt in the fourth quarter and did not put any weight on his left leg as he was helped off the field.

In all, LSU's performance fell well short of the confidence-building performance it wanted before a trip to No. 11 Florida next weekend, followed by a visit from No. 6 South Carolina.

LSU had portrayed its narrow 12-10 victory at Auburn a week earlier as a wakeup call, but it continued to stumble intermittently against its first FCS opponent of the season ? enough so that frustrated fans routinely groaned and even booed.

LSU fumbled five times in all but recovered two of them. Mettenberger's fumble was his third in two games. Michael Ford's fumble in the third quarter stalled a likely scoring drive on the Towson 13. Kenny Hilliard's fumble set up Towson's opening points on a field goal.

Ford still had a solid game overall, rushing 11 times for 76 yards, including a 4-yard TD. Receiver Russell Shepard had his best play on a designed run, bursting through the line and speeding down the sideline for a career-long 78-yard scoring run that he finished by diving to the pylon.

Towson quarterback Grant Enders was 13-of-33 for 103 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown pass to Gerrard Shepard. He also rushed for 86 yards, including a 43-yard scamper that set up West's first TD on a 1-yard dive. West finished with 79 yards on 22 carries. His second TD run also came from a yard out.

Shepard opened scoring on the first play of LSU's second possession.

Towson did not drive past its own 30 on its first three possessions, but Hilliard's fumble on the LSU 38 late in the first quarter gave Towson its first break, and it capitalize with D.J. Sloven's field goal.

Five of LSU's first six drives ended with three punts, a fumble and a missed 51-yard field goal attempt, keeping Towson in the game.

Animated Towson coach Rob Ambrose appeared to be thoroughly enjoying his Death Valley experience on the visitor's sideline, and it only got better for him when Mettenberger fumbled on a sack while scrambling left and Towson recovered on LSU's 45. Soon after, Enders scrambled 43 yards to the LSU 1, and West dove over the pile to give Towson the lead. The point-after kick missed, however, leaving it 9-7.

Mettenberger responded as LSU hoped on his next drive, hitting tight end Chase Clement over the middle for 27 yards, then finding Beckham for a 27-yard score to make it 14-9.

LSU had another scoring chance before halftime after Towson's R.J. Peppers shanked a punt only 6 yards to his own 22, but the drive stalled at the 5, setting up Drew Alleman's field goal to make it 17-9.

Obama, Netanyahu seek to get past Iran differences

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented a show of unity on Friday on preventing a nuclear-armed Iran, seeking to tone down the acrimony between the two leaders that has become an issue in the final stretch of the U.S. presidential race.

Obama, widely seen as having snubbed Netanyahu by not meeting face to face with him during his U.S. visit, spoke instead by phone to the Israeli prime minister amid signs of movement toward a truce in their war of words over how to confront Tehran.

Netanyahu used his U.N. speech a day earlier to keep pressure on Washington to set a "red line" for Tehran, something Obama has refused to do. But in a softening of his approach, the hawkish Israeli premier signaled that no attack on Iran was imminent before the November 6 U.S. presidential election.

With an eye to the close presidential contest, Netanyahu also fielded a call during his New York visit from Obama's Republican rival, Mitt Romney, who has accused the president of being too hard on a close ally and not tough enough on Iran.

Romney has sought to use Obama's differences with Netanyahu to raise doubts with Jewish-American voters about Obama's commitment to Israel's security.

Obama's aides believe, however, that he has played his cards right with Netanyahu, with whom the president has had a notoriously testy relationship.

Netanyahu's strident complaints about U.S. policy on Iran in mid-September plunged U.S.-Israeli relations into crisis, but also spurred a backlash at home and in the U.S. media for seeming to meddle in American politics.

In recent days, the Israelis have sought to dial down the rhetoric, culminating in Netanyahu's speech to the General Assembly, which was seen as sending a message that Israel would not blindside Washington with a unilateral attack on Iran any time soon.

"The two leaders underscored that they are in full agreement on the shared goal of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon," the White House said in a summary of their 20-minute phone conversation.

The White House said the two agreed to continue their cooperation, but it stopped short of saying Obama had given any ground on his resistance to issuing an ultimatum to Tehran, as Netanyahu has repeatedly demanded.

"I had a very good conversation with President Obama," Netanyahu told Israel television. "Our teams are talking."

An Obama aide went further, saying, "The temperature is lower than it had been."

TONING DOWN DIFFERENCES

Netanyahu dramatically ramped up pressure on Obama earlier this month when he insisted the United States did not have a "moral right" to hold Israel back from taking action against Iran because Washington had not set its own limits on Tehran.

That was followed by word that Obama would not meet Netanyahu during the Israeli leader's visit to address the United Nations. Obama later said pointedly that he would ignore the "noise that's out there" on the Iran issue.

Obama's aides were furious that Netanyahu was trying to put pressure on the president in the midst of the election campaign and refused to budge on the red-line issue, despite the risk of alienating pro-Israel voters in election battleground states like Florida and Ohio.

At the same time, Israeli officials - mindful of the danger of antagonizing the Jewish state's main ally and of poisoning relations with the man who could occupy the White House for another four years - moved into damage-control mode.

Michael Oren, Israeli ambassador to the United States, flew back to Jerusalem last weekend, during which he urged Netanyahu to tone down public statements that could be construed as interfering in the U.S. election or supporting Romney, according to sources in the Jewish community in Washington.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak visited Chicago and met privately on September 20 with Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a former close Obama aide, raising speculation that Emanuel might be used as a back-channel conduit to mend ties with the president.

The Israeli desire to defuse the crisis may also have reflected an interpretation of recent U.S. opinion polls showing a widening of Obama's lead over Romney, who has suffered a series of political stumbles.

Romney, speaking to reporters on his campaign plane, said he and Netanyahu agreed Iran must be denied nuclear capabilities but did not agree on specific "red lines" to confront Tehran.

"I do not believe in the final analysis we will have to use military action," Romney said. "I certainly hope we don't have to. I can't take that action off the table."

In his U.N. speech, Netanyahu held up a cartoon-like drawing of a bomb with a fuse and literally drew a red line just below a label reading "final stage," in which Iran would supposedly be 90 percent along the path to having weapons-grade material.

Nevertheless, his warning that Iran would be on the brink of developing a nuclear weapon in less than a year was widely interpreted as some giving breathing space to Obama, who has urged more time for sanctions and diplomacy to work.

By referring to a spring or summer 2013 time frame for Iran to complete the next stage of uranium enrichment, the Israeli leader seemed to dispel fears that Israel might strike Iran before the U.S. election.

Iran denies it is seeking to build nuclear weaponry.

Netanyahu's praise for Obama's stern words for Iran in his own U.N. speech on Tuesday - although it lacked any specific ultimatum - was also seen as a sign that the Israeli leader wanted to quell the unusually public dispute with Washington.

"I think we are moving in a direction where the differences that were there, which were always tactical and not strategic, are in fact being managed at this point," Dennis Ross, Obama's former Middle East adviser, told MSNBC.

Still, White House officials were pleased at avoiding an encounter with Netanyahu, who used an Oval Office meeting in 2011 to lecture Obama on Jewish history. Obama instead kept a lower-than-usual profile at this year's U.N. gathering, making a campaign-style appearance on the popular talk show "The View" and then quickly returning to electioneering.

Nickelblock: An element's love-hate relationship with battery electrodes

Friday, September 28, 2012

Anyone who owns an electronic device knows that lithium ion batteries could work better and last longer. Now, scientists examining battery materials on the nano-scale reveal how nickel forms a physical barrier that impedes the shuttling of lithium ions in the electrode, reducing how fast the materials charge and discharge. Published last week in Nano Letters, the research also suggests a way to improve the materials.

The researchers, led by the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Chongmin Wang, created high-resolution 3D images of electrode materials made from lithium-nickel-manganese oxide layered nanoparticles, mapping the individual elements. These maps showed that nickel formed clumps at certain spots in the nanoparticles. A higher magnification view showed the nickel blocking the channels through which lithium ions normally travel when batteries are charged and discharged.

"We were surprised to see the nickel selectively segregate like it did. When the moving lithium ions hit the segregated nickel rich layer, they essentially encounter a barrier that appears to slow them down," said Wang, a materials scientist based at EMSL, the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a DOE user facility on PNNL's campus. "The block forms in the manufacturing process, and we'd like to find a way to prevent it."

Lithium ions are positively charged atoms that move between negative and positive electrodes when a battery is being charged or is in use. They essentially catch or release the negatively charged electrons, whose movement through a device such as a laptop forms the electric current.

In lithium-manganese oxide electrodes, the manganese and oxygen atoms form rows like a field of cornstalks. In the channels between the stalks, lithium ions zip towards the electrodes on either end, the direction depending on whether the battery is being used or being charged.

Researchers have known for a long time that adding nickel improves how much energy the electrode can hold, battery qualities known as capacity and voltage. But scientists haven't understood why the capacity falls after repeated usage -- a situation consumers experience when a dying battery holds its charge for less and less time.

To find out, Wang, materials scientist Meng Gu and their collaborators used electron microscopy at EMSL and the National Center for Electron Microscopy at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to view how the different atoms are arranged in the electrode materials produced by Argonne National Laboratory researchers. The electrodes were based on nanoparticles made with lithium, nickel, and manganese oxides.

First, the team took high-resolution images that clearly showed rows of atoms separated by channels filled with lithium ions. On the surface, they saw the accumulation of nickel at the ends of the rows, essentially blocking lithium from moving in and out.

To find out how the surface layer is distributed on and within the whole nanoparticle, the team used a technique called three-dimensional composition mapping. Using a nanoparticle about 200 nanometers in size, they took 50 images of the individual elements as they tilted the nanoparticle at various angles. The team reconstructed a three-dimensional map from the individual elemental maps, revealing spots of nickel on a background of lithium-manganese oxide.

The three-dimensional distribution of manganese, oxygen and lithium atoms along the surface and within the particle was relatively even. The nickel, however, parked itself in small areas on the surface. Internally, the nickel clumped on the edges of smaller regions called grains.

To explore why nickel aggregates on certain surfaces, the team calculated how easily nickel and lithium traveled through the channels. Nickel moved more easily up and down the channels than lithium. While nickel normally resides within the manganese oxide cornrows, sometimes it slips out into the channels. And when it does, this analysis showed that it flows much easier through the channels to the end of the field, where it accumulates and forms a block.

The researchers used a variety of methods to make the nanoparticles. Wang said that the longer the nanoparticles stayed at high temperature during fabrication, the more nickel segregated and the poorer the particles performed in charging and discharging tests. They plan on doing more closely controlled experiments to determine if a particular manufacturing method produces a better electrode.

This work was supported by PNNL's Chemical Imaging Initiative.

California Stops Employer, University Social Media Snooping

California became the first state to explicitly block universities and employers from seeking access to applicants' social media accounts, as Gov. Jerry Brown signed two measures Sept. 27, reported The Sacramento Bee. Under the new laws, employers are not allowed to fire or discipline workers who refuse to share information related to their social media accounts, such as passwords.

"The Golden State is pioneering the social media revolution and these laws will protect all Californians from unwarranted invasions of their personal social media accounts," Brown said in a prepared statement.

University students in California, athletes in particular, are now also protected from anyone requesting access to their social media accounts or personally identifiable information that could link a student to an online profile.

?Employers have no right to ask job applicants for their house keys or to read their diaries ? why should they be able to ask them for their Facebook passwords and gain unwarranted access to a trove of private information about what we like, what messages we send to people, or who we are friends with?? said Charles E. Schumer, a New York senator who has requested that the Federal Trade Commission create such a regulation since 2010.

Before passage of the new laws, Facebook issued multiple statements discouraging employers or universities from prying into users' accounts. ?While we do not have any immediate plans to take legal action against any specific employers, we look forward to engaging with policymakers and other stakeholders, to help better safeguard the privacy of our users,? a Facebook statement reads.

The laws, based on AB 1844 and SB 1349, will go into effect Jan. 1.

Callers posing as 'police associations' solicit small business owners ...

Many Chinese American small business owners have fallen victim to fraud and exploitation recently, as callers posing as 'police associations' solicit cash donations, World Journal reports.

In many cases, businesses have donated hundreds of dollars at a time, especially since the callers seem to target recent immigrants, who may feel obligated to donate when someone says they are from a police agency.?Senior Lead Officer Danny Chao of the LAPD says that they are aware of these phone calls and advises that business owners not make any donations to groups claiming to be police organizations. Chao also pointed out that police departments do not solicit cash from businesses, nor are businesses ever obligated to make donations, even to law enforcement agencies.

Become An Internet Marketing Pro With These Tips! | Internet ...

This means that you will have to think of some brand new techniques to sell the products. This article details some of the main similarities that are exhibited in the majority of companies.

Creating an affiliate website can help boost sales. Always make sure that your affiliate program is presented clearly in order to increase your partners. If your site is search engine optimized well, then you?ll draw plenty of positive attention to both yourself and your affiliates.

TIP! Never do business with disreputable companies that do not offer you a reasonable commission. Avoid companies that don?t give an affiliate at least twenty percent of every sale.

It is necessary to have lots of backlinks to quality content; however, you should ensure these links will actually take your visitor to his or her desired destination. In other words, if a visitor clicks on a ?Southwest Airlines deals? link and ends up at your webpage advertising ?South Pacific cruise destinations?, then he or she will probably not be willing to do business with your company. Even though you may think you have a good strategy going, mismatching your links and their destination pages will irritate and turn away potential customers, because they will no longer trust you.

When you use affiliate marketing businesses, one of the best things you can do is use your own product. As a user, you will be able to write strong and honest reviews and articles for the web. You can join chat rooms on the web to interactive with consumers in real time about how your product has been helpful personally. Whenever you post something online, always insert an affiliate link. This provides readers with a simple way to purchase items and increases sales.

Never underestimate the potential of employing your customers as affiliate marketers. Whenever a customer makes a purchase, offer him or her the chance to become an affiliate for your business. If they are interested in becoming an affiliate, that one sale to them can turn into thousands. Expanding your web marketing campaign through recruiting can boost your profits exponentially.

TIP! Paid advertising, like Google?s Adsense, are well worth the cost. By purchasing ads that target the keywords that drive sales, you will increase the traffic to your site and increase the number of potential buyers who have shown interest in that keyword.

When you are working on an internet marketing business do not start large. By learning along the way, you?ll have more of a chance to succeed. After you have gained your footing, you will be better equipped to compete with the others in your niche.

Increasing the success of your affiliate marketing training campaigns relies on not only front-end sales but back-end sales too. You are entitled to a part of the sales you generate. Especially if the customer goes back to buy a product you recommended. Do business with companies that allow you to keep a portion of all back-end sales.

It is not a secret that you must spend some money to make some money. The same goes when starting to venture into web marketing. It is a wise idea to reinvest some of the profits from online marketing into advertising. Many major sites, including Google and Facebook have their own ad programs, which can draw a lot of traffic with the right ad.

TIP! Honesty is always the best policy, so remember to disclose to your readers that you are paid if they purchase from an affiliate link. Readers recognize affiliate links; don?t try to hide it from them.

One way to begin with your internet marketing ventures is to advertise using multiple programs that reach the same consumer. By increasing the number of affiliate sites that you target in your niche, you offer a wider array of links to potential visitors.

Eventually, you will be able to gauge which affiliate advertising programs have been effective for certain demographic groups. Some clients could react better to an advertisement that is more glitz and glamour. Others, however, could react better to a more laid-back approach. Therefore, it is imperative that you are clear about who your ads are targeting.

Disclose your affiliations to your readers. Being honest shows that you respect your customers and they are sure to appreciate that.

TIP! Don?t depend on affiliate partners to keep your whole affiliate marketing campaign afloat. Diverdify the vendors you use and the types of products you promote to your customers.

Very frequent contact works to build and enhance the connection between affiliates who benefit from the partnership. Plentiful, inexpensive contact is a great way to sustain your income sources. The marketing partners that prove to be most beneficial to you are those where the relationship is constantly nurtured.

You will achieve more success in affiliate promotion if you heed the advice of a few well-written books rather than trying to become an expert on everything. There will be little to no return initially and be prepared to not make money until you get it right. If you are simply reading, eventually this will turn into delays. Choose a couple of good, workable tips and put them to work.

Internet marketing is an outstanding opportunity, but you must know how to do it properly if you desire to make a significant income from it. You want your site or site to rank as highly as possible in searches. This will gain you better affiliate links and more money.

TIP! If you are expecting a lifetime commission you may be barking up the wrong tree. Since the profit from this type of commission is high, it will still be worthwhile to try to manage the commission into your sale.

If your website is sports-related, you already know what your visitors are going to be interested in. A sports site should only have sports related links. Chances are higher that readers will click something that is related to the other content on your website.

Work with companies that provide multiple types of payment options. While some companies send you a check after you have reached a particular amount, others pay you via your bank account or PayPal.

You increase your profits by using paid advertising. Well-placed advertisements will help increase both traffic and sales on your site. The number of prospective buyers will increase when doing this.

TIP! An important tool for successful affiliate marketing is to use a tracking service. If an affiliate doesn?t calculate your sales correctly, the tracking service can prove that the total isn?t correct.

Don?t underestimate the power of a link?s visual location on your website. Test your link on different parts of the page and compare the results. You should always use the same exact link when moving it around the page. The only change to the link should be the placement of it on your page.

Methods like that work to bring in customers. All you have to figure out is how to apply them to the position you?re interested

US economic data help world markets recover

LONDON (AP) ? Robust U.S. economic indicators pushed world markets higher on Tuesday, offsetting uncertainty over Europe's debt problems and global growth.

Consumer confidence in the U.S. jumped in September to its highest level since February, according to the Conference Board whose index rose to 70.3 points from 61.3 in August. Market expectations were for a more modest gain.

A separate report showed U.S. home prices kept rising in July in all 20 cities tracked. It's the third straight month in which prices rose in every city.

After early losses in Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 was up 0.2 percent to 5,850.21 while Germany's DAX rose 0.2 percent to 7,424.39 and France's CAC-40 was up 0.1 percent at 3,499.27.

Wall Street opened higher, with the Dow up 0.3 percent at 13,597.01 and the S&P 500 gaining 0.3 percent to 1,460.89.

Markets had earlier traded lower on concerns that Europe's government debt problems will continue to pose a risk to the economy and investors.

Spain is due to unveil this week a new series of cost-cutting measures and structural reforms that could pave the way for a demand for financial aid from its fellow eurozone countries.

But hopes that Madrid will apply for the aid were overcome by concern that it was delaying the move. Spain has been reluctant to ask since such assistance comes with strings attached.

Another key issue is whether eurozone countries will grant Greece more time to reach its deficit reduction targets. The country also needs to finalize a package of austerity measures but political leaders are struggling to compromise as popular anger increases.

Also weighing on financial markets this week has been evidence of a broad-based slowdown in the world economy. While Europe is sliding toward recession, the U.S. and Chinese economies ? the world's two largest ? are struggling.

Credit ratings agency Standard & Poor's on Tuesday lowered its growth forecasts for the eurozone. It expects a 0.8 percent contraction this year and no growth in 2013. The biggest source of concern, it said, was Spain and Italy.

"Recent economic indicators continue to paint a bleak picture for Europe," said Jean-Michel Six, S&P chief economist for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Earlier, in Asia, trading was uneven. Japan's Nikkei 225 index zigzagged throughout the day until closing 0.3 percent higher at 9,091.54.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng was marginally higher at 20,698.68. South Korea's Kospi lost 0.6 percent to 1,991.41. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 0.3 percent to 4,372.90.

Mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.2 percent to 2,029.29. The Shenzhen Composite Index fell 0.6 percent at 835.51. But benchmarks in Singapore, Indonesia, India, New Zealand and Thailand rose.

In currency markets, the euro rose to $1.2965 from $1.2935 in late trading Monday while the dollar was down at 77.73 yen from 77.86 yen.

Benchmark crude for November delivery was up 62 cents to $92.55 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 96 cents to settle at $91.93 on Monday.

Romney pulls his punches at Bill Clinton event

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Introduced by Bill Clinton and facing a room filled with Democrats, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney pulled his punches on Tuesday and outlined an approach to foreign aid that would boost the role of free enterprise in developing nations.

Romney addressed the former president's Clinton Global Initiative and from the outset made light of his situation.

Clinton's speech at the Democratic National Convention last month gave a boost to President Barack Obama, who now leads Romney in a number of swing states that will be vital in the November 6 election.

After Clinton gave a polite introduction of Romney, thanking him for his support for the Americorps foreign aid program begun during the Clinton presidency, Romney quipped:

"If there's one thing we've learned this election season, it's that a few words from Bill Clinton can do a man a lot of good. After that introduction, I guess all I have to do is wait a day or two for the bounce," he said.

Laughter rang through the audience, which included a number of high-profile Democrats like former Clinton Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, former Clinton White House Chief of Staff John Podesta, former Ohio Senator John Glenn, retired General Wesley Clark and entertainer Will.i.Am, among others.

The Clinton Global Initiative is a bipartisan aid effort and Romney held back from his usual campaign barbs against Obama.

But with the world's attention on the annual United Nations General Assembly where Obama spoke in another part of Manhattan, Romney cited a number of foreign policy challenges that implied criticism of Obama's handling of them.

"Syria has witnessed the killing of tens of thousands of people. The president of Egypt is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. Our ambassador to Libya was assassinated in a terrorist attack. And Iran is moving toward nuclear weapons capability. We feel that we are at the mercy of events, rather than shaping events," he said.

Romney had drawn criticism from Democrats and some Republicans two weeks ago by injecting politics into the tragic events surrounding the killing of U.S. ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three other diplomatic personnel in Libya.

That was only one of several stumbles to afflict the former Massachusetts governor since his own Republican convention, and he is now attempting to return his campaign to solid ground with six weeks left of campaigning.

After his visit to New York, he will go on a two-day bus tour of Ohio, widely considered to be a state he must win. A Washington Post poll had Obama up eight points in Ohio, 52 percent to 44 percent.

He will be joined at a rally in Dayton by his vice presidential running mate, Paul Ryan, to try to recreate the energy for his campaign that the pair generated when he picked the conservative Wisconsin congressman to join the ticket last month.

Romney's central theme in New York was to propose that the United States put a greater focus on using U.S. foreign assistance to encourage free enterprise as a way of creating jobs in the developing world.

Romney argued that much of U.S. development aid has had limited success at lifting people out of poverty and that U.S. foreign aid programs frequently have tried to supplant private enterprise.

"A temporary aid package can jolt an economy. It can fund some projects. It can pay some bills. It can employ some people some of the time. But it can't sustain an economy ? not for long," he said.

Romney, a former private equity executive, proposed a "prosperity pact" program that would use financial assistance to support development of free enterprise.

The United States has backed "micro-credit programs" for years to fund small loans to help entrepreneurs in developing nations create businesses. Bill Clinton was a prime advocate for these policies.

Romney would take that a step further to provide assistance to help medium-sized businesses develop and connect them to the global market.

"A year from now, I hope to return to this meeting as president, having made substantial progress toward achieving the reforms I've outlined," Romney said.

#TeamRobin Pedals For a Cause at SoulCycle

ht soul cycle cc 120923 wblog #TeamRobin Pedals For a Cause at SoulCycle

Reported by ABC News Correspondent John Schriffen:

As an athlete, weekend warrior, or just a health enthusiast, we?ve all been there.? That point in a workout when your breathing becomes heavy, body feels weak, and that voice inside is screaming for you to stop. But there?s something that keeps you going. In my case, slumped over a spinning bike, it was a message written on my arm that gave me a jolt of energy every time I looked down.? It said #TeamRobin.

This weekend a group of us here at ABC News traded in our work clothes for workout gear to participate in a charity cancer spin class at SoulCycle in New York City.? Many in the packed room of about 80 people had their own reasons for being there.? For us, it was all about supporting our good friend Robin Roberts.

By now many of you know that Robin has been diagnosed with MDS, a rare blood disorder, and has had a bone marrow transplant.? But what you may not know is what she means to the ABC family. As a new correspondent I remember my first day on the set of ?Good Morning America.?? I was nervous, still finding my way through the winding hallways, and it was Robin who pulled me aside to personally congratulate me on joining the team. Her infectious smile and positive energy had an immediate calming effect.? It?s that genuine personal connection she forges with everyone she meets that made it so easy for Bianna Golodryga, Juju Chang, Bob Murphy, Sunny Hostin, Dr. Jennifer Ashton, producer Meredith Frost and the rest of our team to say yes, we will ride for Robin.

If you?ve never been to SoulCycle before (it was my first time), picture a warm, inviting space like a juice bar, where you feel healthy just walking in.? My sister Danielle and I were greeted with spin shoes, water, towels, and a locker.? Everything we needed to focus on a good workout.? After changing the team gathered and our co-leader Barbara Fedida, with marker in hand, wrote those inspirational words #TeamRobin on all of our arms.? Now we were ready to ride.

With the up-tempo music blasting and a little sweat going in the first 15 minutes we were all feeling pretty good.? But that was just the warmup.? All of a sudden our amazing instructor Nick Oram pulled his shirt off and yelled, ?Here we go, around the world!?

?Around the what?? I thought to myself.

While pedaling we stood up, then down, went side to side, coordinating our legs, bodies and arms just to stay on the bike.? As if that wasn?t hard enough, 20 minutes later we picked up weights for some bicep curls, shoulder presses, and, yes, more ab work.

It certainly helped being flanked by my co-workers, almost like the flying V from the movie ?The Mighty Ducks.?? Ginger Zee to my left, my sister and John Muller to my right.? In front, co-leader Sam Champion, Barbara, and David Muir, who looked like he could ride for hours.? But we still had 10 more minutes left in the class and I was spent.

That?s when I took another look down at my right arm.

Just the encouragement I needed to finish without giving up.

After 45 minutes, my shirt completely drenched, it was over.? We did it!? The entire room broke into applause, thanking our instructor and each other for reaching our goal.

In all, the day raised close to $10,000 for the American Cancer Society.? Personally it was a humbling experience to push my body to new limits and to be a part of such a great cause.? I would gladly do it all over again to support out emotional leader, Robin Roberts.

Go #TeamRobin!

Low Carbohydrate Diet | Bodybuilding, Supplements, Diets ...

A low carbohydrate diet, as the name suggests, is one in which the quantity of carbohydrates is very low. A low carbohydrate diet typically consists of low carbohydrate foods. There are some diets that advocate giving up carbohydrates completely. However, a low carbohydrate diet recommends lowering the total intake of carbohydrates and not eliminating them from the diet entirely.

There are some diets that advocate giving up carbohydrates completely. However, a low carbohydrate diet recommends lowering the total intake of carbohydrates and not eliminating them from the diet entirely.

You can consume low carbohydrate fruits when you are on a carbohydrate diet. However, try and avoid fruits like mango and banana, which are simple carbohydrates and which release large amounts of glucose into the blood stream. When you are on a low carbohydrate diet, it is also important to remain informed about what you are consuming. For instance, when you are buying foods at the market, be sure to read the label carefully. When you are on a low carbohydrate diet, not more than 15% of the total energy from your diet should be attributed to carbohydrates.

You can start with some easy changes before you make any drastic ones. It is important to make sure that you change over very slowly. There are many different types of low carbohydrate diets, and you will have to choose the kind of diet that you want for yourself. You can use a low carb food pyramid to pick out specific foods from the list.

Low fat carbohydrate foods are helpful in controlling your weight and obesity. Such foods also protect your heart from damage and have a low glycemic index as well. Some examples of these low carbohydrate foods are given below:

Lettuce, spinach and other leafy greens
Carrots
Green beans
Tomatoes
Broccoli
Cucumbers
Snow Peas, green peas, snap peas
Bean sprouts
Celery

A low carbohydrate diet is a high fat diet. Most people feel that a low carbohydrate diet is the easiest and simplest way to get rid of excess weight. It is important that you check with your doctor before going on such a diet. Low carbohydrate diet foods include the following:
Fruits: Peaches, strawberries, avocadoes, black berries, blue berries etc. ? these are permissible if in limited quantities.
Herbs and Spices: Basil, oregano, thyme, garlic, pepper etc. ? limit these to one to two tablespoons.
Dairy: Heavy cream, cream cheese, butter, full fat sour cream, full fat cheeses ? keep intake to one to two ounces a day.
Proteins: Pork products, beef, seafood, eggs, lamb, poultry and unsweetened whey protein.
Nuts and Seeds: They should be raw or roasted dry. Cashew nuts, peanuts, walnuts, pine nuts, pistachios, almonds, sunflower and flax seeds are good options.
Vegetables: These should again be eaten in limited quantities ? leafy greens, mushroom, sea vegetables, leek, eggplant, squash, sprouts, pumpkin, celery etc.
Condiments and Sauces: Avoid those with added sugar and keep quantities in check for the following: mustard, mayonnaise, tartar sauce, hot sauce, broth.
Foods that contain white flour and sugar are not included in a low carbohydrate diet.

Low carbohydrate snacks are those that contain hardly any carbohydrates. It is important to stock up on such snacks as they are nutritious and healthy and a good to reach for if you feel hungry in between meals. Low carbohydrate snack foods are easy to make and are delicious too. Try out the ones given below.
Roasted Soy Nuts
Celery with Peanut Butter
Popcorn
Raw vegetables with spinach dip
Low carbohydrate shakes (substitute ice cream with heavy cream or cream cheese or whipped cream.)
Peanut Butter Protein Balls
Hard Boiled Eggs
Low Carb Trail Mix
Celery with tuna
Sunflower seeds
Devilled eggs
Mushrooms with cheese spread inside
Plan your low carbohydrate meals keeping the above mentioned foods in mind.

Engen continues to show its support for a green South Africa

?Engen is a funding partner of not-for-profit social enterprise Food and Trees for Africa (FTFA), as well as an active supporter of its EduPlant programme ? a food garden and skills transfer programme benefiting many schools and communities nationally,? says Khanyisa Balfour, Group Corporate Social Investment manager for Engen. FTFA has been planting trees and greening communities across South Africa for 22 years. ?We traditionally focus on Arbor Month as part of our greening efforts across all regions in which we operate to promote the role trees play in enriching the environment and improving lives.?

In addition to distributing trees, schools receive garden resources and equipment, and booklets guiding their tree-planting activities that enrich their understanding of environmental matters.

?In many instances, Engen personally selects beneficiaries, which also include other NGOs and children?s homes,? says Balfour. ?Our employees also get involved, helping with planting when needed, or simply because they love giving back and connecting with communities.?

Balfour says the green legacy of a tree works on multiple levels. ?We don?t just plant indigenous and fruit trees on school premises ? we?re also planting a seed of knowledge in learners. Trees play a fundamental role in improving environments, sequestering carbon, cleaning the air and acting as a wind-break. Over and above this, fruit trees also contribute to food security, making them socially, economically and environmentally important.?

FTFA ecopreneur, Sipho Mathe, think there is no better gift to give than a tree. ?It fundamentally improves all aspects of the area it is planted in, making it a wonderful asset for everyone?.

Relationships End In Tragedy | Meet Mii

Identified as a loving father and a caring husband by his friends and acquaintances, little did 35-year-old Rajbir Sharma, a well-settled businessman, realised that his philandering nature and friendship having a romantic young man would 1 day cost him not just their own life but of several others.

Rajbir was obviously a loving father. Maybe he is seen taking a walk along with his two little daughters and wife every evening. He loved his wife and often took her out. But there was another side to his personality, known simply to his friends. A carefree and well-settled businessman, he would indulge in romantic relationships with women just for fun. His friend Manish, a son of the contractor, System.Drawing.Bitmap romantic like him, said Gulab, one of the good friends of the duo, the master of a store on the street. Rajbir, who originally belongs to Haryana, had come to settle in Swaroop Nagar more than a decade ago and was a successful transporter. Rajbir great brothers are typical transporters. One of his brothers, Krishan Sharma, was shot by Rajbir today [Friday], while the other two brothers are in Bangalore. The family owns over 20 trailer trucks. Rajbir had recently bought two new trucks. Manish, who goes to exactly the same locality, was one of Rajbir? s best friends. Family members of Manish had also result from Haryana a couple of years ago, added Gulab.

Both would spend hours together in a hair saloon on the street and also have fun, added another friend, not ready to be named. Manish had a long-standing relationship with Jyoti. Though their own families were against it, the two would talk over the telephone for hours. Manish? s father beat him on several occasions, but he or she is incorrigible. When his father stopped giving him pocket money, he used a career with a transporter half a year ago. Rajbir had spotted Usha some time ago and fell on her behalf. He waylaid her over a number of occasions, nevertheless the girl had not been interested. Earlier also he had relationships along with other women. Only his friends knew regarding it, said the friend.

But no one had expected the two to have such an extreme step. It never appeared the two may cause such bloodshed. We never saw them carrying weapons or losing their cool. Rajbir could be fun-loving and also a large-hearted person. He would take his friends for sojourns and bore each of the expenses. Manish too a new cool temperament. It absolutely was shocking to me and all sorts of their friends that they were doing such a thing, summed up Gulab.

Giants run over Panthers

Short-handed NY has no problem in surging to 36-7 victory

By AARON BEARD

updated 1:34 a.m. ET Sept. 21, 2012

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Eli Manning didn't need a fourth-quarter comeback Thursday night.

The two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback, running back Andre Brown and the rest of the New York Giants finished off the Carolina Panthers way before that.

Brown ran for a career-high 113 yards and two touchdowns in his first NFL start to help the Giants rout the Panthers 36-7.

Four days after rallying from 14 points down to beat Tampa Bay, the Giants dominated the first half, scoring on their first four possessions to build a 20-0 lead.

The defending champion Giants (2-1) were without three starters but it hardly mattered.

Brown ? waived by five different teams ? including the Panthers ? since coming into the league as a fourth-round draft pick in 2009 ? got his chance Thursday night when Ahmad Bradshaw sat out with a neck injury.

Brown said he thought about getting cut by the Panthers before the game ? and it inspired him.

"I was walking into the stadium and I have to go by the spot where I parked my car," Brown said. "I felt a little fire, no doubt. I'm so happy to come out here. It really humbled me. It really shows that everything is not guaranteed. You know, I'm just going to ride this wave. Hopefully, it's a long wave."

Ramses Barden is hoping to ride that same wave.

Barden caught nine passes for a career-high 138 yards in his first NFL start. He played in place of Hakeem Nicks.

Of course it helps that the guy throwing you the ball is named Manning. He completed 27 of 35 passes for 288 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.

On the other side, second-year quarterback Cam Newton struggled all night and was pressured into three interceptions. The Panthers (1-2) had five turnovers, including two by returner Joe Adams.

Newton had no luck running the read option against the Giants. He was held to 6 yards rushing a week after running for a career-high 71 yards against the Saints.

"We got some licks on him, when he kept the ball, and that's something that was lacking last week," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "You have to be disciplined. You have to have people in the right spots, or he'll take full advantage of it."

Panthers coach Ron Rivera likened the loss to a lesson you learn from your big brother.

"They came in and slapped us around and dragged us to the ground a little bit," Rivera said. "Hopefully, we learn from it a little bit. Hopefully, we learn from it and, hopefully, we don't like it and we come back focused."

Mixing run and pass, the Giants dominated the opening half, outgaining the Panthers 303-125.

Manning completed 19 of 25 passes for 208 yards in the first half, including a 14-yard touchdown pass to Martellus Bennett to cap the Giants' game-opening drive and set the tone. It capped an eight-play, 80-yard drive and marked the third straight game the Panthers have given up a touchdown on an opponent's first drive.

For Rivera and the Panthers the first half was a nightmare.

"When you put yourself in a hole like that it's tough trying to claw and scratch yourself back up," Rivera said. "And that's really what happened. That's the type of game they want you to be in. That's trouble. When you get behind they can cut those guys loose on the pass rush."

Brown repeatedly bounced off tacklers and Barden had little trouble getting open against a Carolina defense that failed to pressure Manning.

Brown ran 13 times for 71 yards and a touchdown last week against Tampa Bay and surpassed that total by the end of the first quarter with 77 yards on seven.

Barden had 123 yards on seven catches at halftime.

Before Thursday night, the fourth-year receiver had never managed more than nine catches for 94 yards receiving in a season.

"At this level, you never know when you're going to get an opportunity, you've got to be prepared for it," Manning said. "Andre Brown is a great example. He's a guy we drafted, he bounced around, and we brought him back. He was on the bubble to make the team, and here you go. Ahmad (Bradshaw) gets hurt, and he ran great, he pass-protected.

"He did get off to a bit of a shaky start. He went left when he was supposed to run right on the first play. We had a little talk and got him settled down, and after that, he did very, very well."

Any hopes that the Panthers would turn things around in the second half were slowed when rookie returner Adams fumbled trying to catch the opening kickoff, resulting in another field goal for Lawrence Tynes.

Tynes finished with five field goals on the night.

The Panthers didn't get on the board until midway through the third quarter when Newton leaped over the pile from a yard out.

Newton said it wasn't what the Giants did but what the Panthers didn't do.

"Who wants to supports something that puts on a performance of embarrassment out there, and that's what that was," Newton said. "If I was a fan of the Carolina Panthers I would be holding my head down in shame at the product that was out there."

Newton said the Panthers problem was execution, not anything the Giants did to stop them.

"We have to fix it," Newton said.

Notes: For the third straight week Carolina receiver Steve Smith sparred with an opposing cornerback during the game. This week's victim was Corey Webster. ... Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart missed his second game of the season because of a toe injury. The Panthers also were without tackle Byron Bell. ... The Panthers honored Olympic gold medal swimmers Cullen Jones and Ricky Berens.

Man to continue right-to-die fight ? This Is Jersey

A man whose right-to-die campaign was heard in the courts alongside ?locked-in syndrome? sufferer Tony Nicklinson is determined to continue his fight to end his life, his wife has said.

The woman said her husband ? known only as 47-year-old Martin in the case ? felt relief for Mr Nicklinson?s family when the keen former sportsman died on August 22 from pneumonia, having refused food for nearly a week. He was paralysed by a stroke in 2005 and took his assisted dying case to the High Court.

The judges heard that a second applicant, Martin, needed assistance to end his life, having suffered a massive stroke in August 2008, and wanted to be allowed a ?dignified suicide?.

Refusing the stricken men judicial review, the judges ruled that the law did not breach human rights and it was for Parliament, not the courts, to decide whether it should be changed.

Speaking to BBC News, Martin?s wife ? whose identity has not been made public ? said: ?I don?t want him to die but I?ve got to respect his wishes.

?From my own personal point of view, I could never end somebody?s life ? that?s who I am. I don?t want to lose Martin, but that is his choice to want to die. We all have choices in life, but he is not able to have a choice or to have control in how his life ends.?

She said that her husband found an ?inner peace? after Mr Nicklinson?s decision to decline food resulted in a rapid deterioration and, eventually, his death.

She said: ?For Martin, I think that for Tony it was probably a relief that he was no longer suffering from this life he hadn?t asked for. That?s not to say it is the same for everyone with locked-in syndrome, but some people are able to thrive on what life they do have. But certainly for Martin and Tony, it?s not what they wanted. It?s very difficult for them to cope with living that life.?

Asked whether Martin would consider starving himself in the same way as Mr Nicklinson, from Melksham in Wiltshire, the man?s wife replied: ?That?s an option open to him at the moment. It takes several days when you stop eating and drinking, and the side effects of that are more traumatic on the family and himself.?

Martin?s wife told the BBC that his lawyers are expected to hear in the next few weeks whether they are allowed a full hearing at the Court of Appeal.

Niger hit by worst flooding in 80 years: Oxfam

NIAMEY, Niger (AP) ? The international aid group Oxfam says half a million people have been displaced in Niger as the country reels from the worst flooding in 80 years.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimates that more than 80 people were killed in the floods.

The landlocked West African country of Niger has been pummeled by back-to-back droughts in 2005, 2010 and the first part of 2012 causing an acute hunger crisis. Samuel Braimah, country director for Oxfam, says the rains were needed, but the excessive rainwater has now destroyed 17,000 acres (7,000 hectares) of crops, making it even more difficult for families strained by drought to rebound.

Of the 1 million children facing life-threatening malnutrition this year in the Sahel, UNICEF says that one-third live in Niger.
